Seriously, good luck to him. If you want to try your hand with the Wobblies and make a motza, do it. Just don't um and ah or use it as a bargaining chip to start (yet again) the ridiculous debate about "ooo, we need to keep our marquee players in the game, pay them anything".
Blah.
Thurston has proven himself to be a very good player, a bit like Shaun Berrigan, excelling out of position at halfback to fill a need for club, state and country.
As it is now though, there's specialist halfbacks coming through that are far better than him in that position, so it's probably time to step aside...this is a good way to do it and save face.
Ultimately he doesn't deserve a pay upgrade to stay in league - he's already in the top 3 highest paid players (allegedly). He hasn't done anything to warrant more. A show and go is great, but he's very one dimensional.
It'd be interesting to see how he goes as a fly half or inside centre at Union. He thrives on room to move, and modern union seems to be a dog fight, so he might well find himself feeling a bit unwanted and unloved.
But hey, give it a go buddy. As I said, just do your negotiations now and sign before the season starts. Don't let your contract be a media circus that takes interest away from the game of rugby league.
KANGAROOS Test halfback Johnathan Thurston has rocked rugby league with the stunning admission he's considering a switch to rugby union.
"I could easily see myself being a Wallaby," the champion halfback said yesterday.
Thurston told The Courier-Mail he does not share the same sense of lifetime loyalty to rugby league felt by Australian captain Darren Lockyer, who rejected several past approaches from rugby.
While the Cowboys remainconfident of snaring their man long-term, there are genuine fears the dual Dally M Medal winner and North Queensland poster boy will defect to rugby union immediately after next year's NRL season.
"I could easily play rugby, I watch the Wallabies and a fair bit of it and I could certainly see myself playing the game," Thurston said.
"I have to think about what's best for me, and if playing rugby is what's best for me, I'll take that option up."
Rugby union, which has poached the likes of NRL superstars Mark Gasnier and Sonny Bill Williams in recent years, has the bankroll to lure the superstar 26-year-old Cowboy.
The Australian Rugby Union's new "Super 15" franchise Melbourne, set to launch in 2011, is currently hunting an inaugural pin-up boy.
Offshore, Thurston's manager Sam Ayoub has in his possession a $1.1million-per-year offer from Japanese rugby with a potential suitor in France also likely.
Domestically, it is understood Ayoub is also seeking formal interest from the ARU and prospective Super 14 clubs.
"Everything ... lifestyle, code, the Cowboys, my representative jerseys ... these are all things I am weighing up," Thurston said.
"I wouldn't say it's a stressful situation to be in. It could be worse, that no one wants a part of me, so it's pretty exciting. It's about making the right decision.
"I need to chat to my family. I've had a bit of a chat to my manager about a couple of things, but I still need to explore all my optionswith rugby."
Asked if he shared the stance of Darren Lockyer, who has declared "he'd never leave the game to chase the money'', the Cowboys captain said: "I don't really think about it like that.
"I could easily go if I think it's the right option. It's just a matter of doing what is best for me and my family."
