If the contract he signs is higher than his current salary we don't have to pay anything. However if he signs say a 4yr $600k contract and we are paying him $900k next year (unlikely) we would have to pay $300k next year, but only if the Broncos accept and allow him to leave.

They could stand strong and say nope we're not paying $300k you either find a better deal or you agree to walk away from the $900k and go sign your $600k.

Gotta say, if this is true, I am pretty damn chuffed. If worse case scenario and we had to pay 300k, it still leaves us with 600k to splurge on a half by my calculations.
 
This should free up enough to get a real fullback. Hopefully we can move someone else on like Boyd or Macca and get a half back as well.

Bit disappointed to hear that Oates is basically a done deal. I hope it's not much money
 
Update: jack bird just posted on Instagram story that it's bullshit and he hasn't been released.

Are you saying a gun fullback is more important to us than a gun half mate? Not sure about that.

A more than decent kicking game. From what I've seen, he's got a decent long kicking game and short kicking game. His long kicks are pretty accurate and find the green alot of the time. His kick chase is great also.

Game management skills like organising our attack, know what plays on and when, getting good ball to our rampaging pack, being vocal during games yelling at players to run here, run at that hole, be here, go there etc.

Leadership qualities. He's won a premiership and knows what it takes to get it done as a half. We'd know exactly what we're getting from him, he's not an untested rookie.

Defense. Now he's not the best defender but I'm sure he's better than turpin at 7 and whoever else we've put in there.

As for 40/20s, we don't need him kicking those. Milf can do those as he's pretty good at them.

What's good about having a guy like Townsend at #7 is it mixes up our kicking game. Milf won't be targeted as much as we've got Townsend to kick also. It won't be as easy for the defense to get at who's kicking on the 5th tackle. We can play smarter rather than just give it to Milf. We need to grow some rugby league smarts and play with some brains.

There's not many quality halves on the market but Townsend is the player I'd be enquiring about if I was Seibold. Not sure how old Townsend is but I'm sure he's got at least another 5 years in the game. Trust me, he'd be perfect for a guy like Milf too. Milf needs to be freed up. He doesn't thrive when he's the sole playmaker and getting targeted every game. I'm hoping a half like Townsend can bring back the Milf from 2015.

I just watched some Milford magic from 2015 and he was attacking from second receiver and was a lot more effective. Not sure why he was always at first receiver this year and simply passed the ball on for no impact. Having a genuine and competent halfback would hopefully let Milford get back to where he’s most dangerous out wide or sniffing around the ruck.
 
Exactly.

This is why a player like Townsend would be great. Not only for Milf but for the forwards too. He's smart enough to give them ball in good positions, running through great lines, 1 on 1 against smaller defenders etc. All we do currently is give it to Haas and Fifita and hope for the best. We aren't a smart team at all.

Always a question of coaching. As I posted before, since 2015, he has had the magic coached out of him, partly to do with shitty team selections and ridiculous positional structures. My support for Seibold is dropping altho Bennett also over-structured Milford from 2016 onwards. I hope this changes next year, and he gets back to doing what you identified in your post
 
I've got no idea who the new captain is likely to be, but by process of elimination, you would have to think Gillett and Glenn are both no chance (Gillett apparently spoken to about his lack of effort this season if reports are true and Glenn no certainty to even be here). So who does that leave? Questions against all candidates include:

Lodge (PR disaster), Carrigan (not experienced enough), Staggs (too young), Milford (wouldn't handle the extra pressure), Macca (just NO), Bird (almost certainly gornskies), TPJ (too hot headed).

To my way of thinking, if we land ourselves a gun half, could they very well be our new captain? Seems an ever increasing possibilty I reckon.

So we are then putting plonker boyd in place at centre? You cannot hide Boyd anywehere in the top 13. He had rings run around him all season!! I feel like banging my head against a brick wall with the clubs decisions.

Yeah it won't work. Laughing stock of the league at fullback, and then again at 5/8, wonder what will happen at centre?

But Chris Garry reckons Boyd has been told he won't be picked for round 1 and until something is made official he's as good as anyone to go off.

I get this and i get the team was stuffed with injuries this season, but the footings should have been put in place already.
