Sorry mate but the Broncos will never be just like every other NRL club.

This!

Our club always finds that great player who steps up above the rest.

Hoffman could be it. Maybe even Beale with some regular first grade.

If Beale is the next great Bronco, I will ban myself from these forums for the 37th time.

Not to me. And not to many other diehard fans like me.

The Broncos isn't about who's coach, who's playing, even where we finish. It's the attitude on the field and the commitment to the chess piece on their chests.

I felt like that was something that was being eroded with Henjak there, but Hook seems to at this stage have reinvigorated that pride. You only need look at the defence and the desperation to see it.

There's still Parker and Thaiday who typify the Broncos' spirit. Josh Hoffman looks every bit a Bronco player in attitude and commitment. Even Hodges who I don't have a lot of time for, he's as passionate about the club as anyone.

People had similar fears about the Broncos when Alfie retired, particularly when Renouf, Peter Ryan and Andrew Gee all left the same season. Life went on.

Life will go on.

Broncos for life.

Fingers crossed that Beale makes something of himself

The way Beale leapt onto the opportunity to play fullback last week, I wonder if he might develop into a Shaun Berrigan-like utility. Not necessarily as good as Berro was, who was undoubtedly the most versatile and tenacious player I've seen, but he could fill a similar role.

Very true

Lockyer Will Never Be Bettered:Gallen

Sharks Captain and Australian teammate Paul Gallen doubts the achievements of retiring NRL legend Darren Lockyer's achievements will ever be replicated.

The Broncos and Origin legend announced he would be retiring at season's end.

He is two games short of taking former New Zealand skipper Ruben Wiki’s record for most international matches, currently sitting on 54 games for Australia, a feat Gallen says he deserves to reach.

“He’s the type of guy that when he talks everyone listens, he’s a legend of the game, hopefully he’ll break the all time games record because he deserves it,” he told sportsnewsfirst.com.au.

“He never panics, he’s always composed, and he’s an 80-minute player who makes everyone want to bring out the best because more often than not, he makes you play your best game.”

The possible New South Wales captain recalls a story earlier this year during the All Stars camp in the Gold Coast where the five-eighth backed him despite the objection of legendary coach Wayne Bennett.

“We were in the All-Stars camp and we were trying to figure out who was going to play where because the team was sort of thrown together,” Gallen explained.

“We were talking about what side of the field we wanted to play on and Hindmarsh didn’t want to play on an edge and I wanted to play left edge but Ashley Harrison threw his hand up first in the meeting and claimed the left side.

“Then Hindmarsh was starting right edge and I knew he didn’t want to start there so I put my hand up and said I'll go there.

“Then Bennett’s gone ‘you’ and I said yes, he said ‘you sure? I don’t want you on the bloody edge I seen you miss a s**t load of tackles out there’, everyone was laughing.

“Lockyer actually stood up and said I’ve had him inside me a fair few times before and vouched for me so Wayne said ‘alright you can play there but only because Locky’s backed you up’.”

The 29-year-old who made his test debut in 2008 a long side Lockyer who made his debut 10 years earlier said it is the 34-year-old who is a true hard man of the game and gets nowhere near the recognition he deserves.

“The last 10 years I’ve been playing, half backs are targeted a lot in defence and he has that every week and still been able to play the amount of games at the level that he has,” he said.

“I have to take my hat off to him, people talk about toughness and a lot of forwards get wraps... guys like him are the toughest in the game.”

A huge loss to the game and the Brisbane side, Gallen said the veteran has nothing left to prove.

“In the near future no-one can replace what he’s done and I don’t if anyone will play the amount of Test and Origins he’s played, he’s done it all," Gallen said.

that's a little homoerotic fantasy in there somewhere.

Trust the Sharks to not proof read the first line.

I wish they would save some of these tributes for the end of the season.

I don't know if you were just taking the piss or not, but I tend to agree to an extent.

Lockyer is the last link to the powerhouse broncos of the 90s

Ummmm - not to be pedantic, but Alfie's still on the coaching staff at Red Hill

I said Boyd but I meant Cooper... But which one mwahahahaha.

Of the Quade variety I'd suggest, Seeing as Matt re-signed with the Saints and Cronk isn't going anywhere from Melbourne

Let's try not to get sidetracked here.

This thread is about Darren Lockyer's retirement.

However, feel free to go nuts in this thread - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6730

All you're off-topic posts have been moved there as well.

Like it or lump it Hunt was more new age than classical fullback. He was a 2nd 5/8. I've no doubt you'll be the only person to dispute that. Why did WB play him at 7? Actually, don't answer that. [eusa_doh

too good.

anyway, has Lockyer even hinted at wanting to coach anytime soon? i hope he doesnt. have 3-4 years off doing nothing but family stuff, then if he wants to give coaching a crack, start from the bottom and go from there.

He said not long ago that he wants to coach the Broncos (it's somewhere in another thread here but I can't be bothered finding it); however also said when he announced his retirement that he intends to take 12 months away from the game completely.

I totally agree that he needs to get away from the game in all capacity and work out if he really does want to be a coach or do something else with the rest of his life. His brother has already offered him a labouring job :-)
