We can do the math:
If the contract is at 700k, first he pays 6% to his manager, that's 42k which leaves 658k. The simple tax calculator from the ato has the tax payable on that amount as a shade over 269k. That leaves his actual income before any expenses as 389k. That's still plenty of money but smaller than a lot of mortgages.
It's less than my mortgage, but hey, I live in Sydney.

They live in Ipswich as far as I'm aware though, with a median house price under $400k in the last 12 months, so assuming they bought it yesterday and had to front a 20% deposit, then the balance on day 1 of repayments would be just over 300k, which would still be far less than Fifita's after tax salary for just one year.

I would pick up the half the tab for another club if it meant more money to keep Fifita. Fifita is a deadset superstar in waiting, he has taken to water every time he has stepped up to a new level, he is a must keep. We only have 2 games to go off this year but in those two games, 15 tackle busts, 57 tackles with only 3 missed, one penalty, averaging 152m a game. Tell me those aren't must keep stats from an admittedly very small sample.

edit: nm, looking at nrl 2019 stats for fifita now.

People viewed Milford as a must-keep as well once upon a time. There was interest from Melbourne, forcing us to up our offer to $1m. How's that looking right now?

I'm glad the club is starting to learn from their mistakes, he's not a $1m player. Especially with the uncertainty of the cap moving forward due to COVID, $700K is a fair offer for him to stay home and play with his friends and cousin (who we just re-signed this morning).

While we should learn from our mistakes, the pendulum shouldn't swing too far in the other direction in that we hope to avoid them entirely by offering too little. We just need to make better decisions in the long term - keeping a young gamebreaking forward who has done everything asked of him at each level he's stepped up to, whilst playing with shitty halves, is a no-brainer in terms of retention.

I don't think 700k is necessarily lowballing, but if he wanted an extra 100k or whatever, you'd be silly to go sorry 700k or no deal.

I can’t imagine how heavy a decision like this weighs on a young man his age and economic background. I can’t hold any of his actions or decisions against him in regards to these contract talks. ****, I’m in my early 30s and it would give me a nervous break down.

Sure, I don't know the specifics of her house or what's owed. Just showing that the headline 700k can be a long long way from what a player actually gets. Like the million dollars Milford is on is under 550k after management and tax. It's still a better wicket than most of us are on.

It's fine? Being a twenty year old who can buy a house for cash every second year instead of every year is still a pretty good position to be in, and without the social structure taxes fund chances are these blokes wouldn't be earning those amounts anyway.

If we budge on the $700K we've been steady on for 12 months we lose all credibility. The next person that tries to negotiate with us knows that we can be broken if they hold out long enough. Fifita's next deal, he'll know he can get more than what we offer if he holds out long enough.

No deal.

$700K, take it or leave it young man. The Broncos no longer negotiate, we tell you what you're worth.

Hey look I’m not a socialist nutbag I get why we need taxes, still stings though.

Honestly, it would reflect poorly on his judgement if he stayed. Taking the one year deal makes perfect sense to me. Any longer and you risk the club having folded due to splashing cash around negligently like this. I don't expect the Titans to still exist in its current form in five years.

We're used to having a coach with pulling power who can con players to accept under the market offers in return for a bit of babysitting. Now tell me who you'd rather be snuggling up with: Mal (the greatest rugby league player of all time, who played a bit of second row) and Gordie (the greatest second rower of all time) or Seibold (nobody) and White (nobody)?

The Broncos need to watch out Haas doesn't pull a Roberts and try to follow him.

We need to look at players with the right attitude, the ability to play but also the ability to be leaders.
Im not saying its an "either/or" situation, but if it was I'd take carrigan over Haas or fiffita any day of the week. We are so short of leaders who buckle down.

So am I Sproj, so am I. I guess being in Perth isn't so bad compared to Melbourne. Day 2 of 14 and then off to mine for 2 weeks but after that?

The uncertainty is pure crap. You've had a tougher run with this than I've had and others worse still but it's no wonder mental health issues have skyrocketed. I've got mates over here in WA who haven't seen their partners for 111 days and our employer thinks money fixes the anguish.
@Huge, here is a copy of a paper I published back in 2017. The data are taken from the largest survey ever completed in the FIFO sector. In this particular study the behaviour of children were examined in an attempt to gauge their response to their parent(s) being made to work longer hours. There is some eye-opening stats in there highlighting the extent of relationship breakdowns.

“He wants to play comfortable footy at a good club. The Broncos have been good to him but they … haven’t won for six games in a row.

Literally a quote from David Fifita's mum in an article just posted by Brent Read, lol.

Slow nice guys don't win football games.

It is funny that our focus has been on these young players coming through for a while but due to mismanagement we can't keep them because we can't afford them. Fifita turned out to be too good - it is hilarious that management weren't prepared for these kids they invested in to exceed expectations.

if you're a shit club you have to pay overs, that's pretty much a given. more ammo for the board to sack seibold asap.

Barba had that ability too, as did Dave Taylor, Julian O'Neil and Carl Webb.
If they play well it's because someone is keeping them on course. Nothing is more frustrating than a loose cannon with lost potential.

Haha that has to be a joke right? What levels of stupidity does it require to actually mention that when questioned and God help us if she is his main source for advice.

if this is true ... and since it is Badel, i'm skeptical, 1 of 2 things is happening.

1. he loves the club and/or his team mates, is happy here and doesn't want to leave ... but is finding it hard to turn down the ridiculous money offered by the Titans (like i'm sure most of us would have at 20)

2. he read the paper when the Titans said they could go higher if needed, so he's forcing them to do that

my personal opinion is that option 1 fits this scenario closer
Pretty much, wants the money but wants to stay. Either way he won’t need the pension when he’s done.
