Discussion about Wayne Bennett

He just wants to try & be the 1st coach to coach 3 different premiership teams. (by himself)

No but if he wants a challenge which he has stated, Newcastle is the bigger challenge than Souths IMO.

And if Nathan Tinkler succeeds in buying Newcastle he will be offering BIG BUCKS to Bennett - and it appears Bennett is at least willing to listen to any Newcastle offer as he has publicly stated he is putting off any consideration on his future until after the Newcastle members vote on Tinkler's proposal.

Did you see a quote for that or was it just the Courier Mail/Daily Telegraph trying to fill space with a story lacking substance?

Not too sure if Bennett is motivated by dollars. I believe he was quoted as saying the Dragons greatest appeal was their rich history.

IMO the Bennett to Souths rumors aren't plausible. Their list would be a huge turn off - overpaid players locked into long term deals. Bennett wants to go somewhere where he has the flexibility to mould the playing roster himself. History has shown Wayne will happily show the door to anyone demanding more than what he regards as their dollar value.

I heard it from his very own lips in a radio interview.

And I didn't mean to imply that he is motivated by dollars, because I don't think he is. But he is definitely interested in listening to what Tinkler will propose in terms of him coaching the Knights - the dollars will be the icing on the top; but IMO if $$$ is really all Tinkler has to offer him then he won't go there.

I can understand why Bennett would be interested in coaching the Knights.

Newcastle is probably the most passionate city about rugby league in Australia. Everything is about the Knights.

Winning a premiership here would give WB godlike status in the Hunter. It's going on a decade since they beat the Eels, and Knights fans have had to endure a load of crap since then.

Ta, I saw that as the headline in some of the News Limited press for a few days but never bothered reading. Most of their stuff on Bennett has been baseless so assumed it would once more be be opinions passed off as fact.

I can also see Newcastle appealing to him TBH. Brian Smith has done a lot of preliminary work for him.

Not if his succession plan works out. It should be a smooth transition from WB to Locky with WB stepping back to a coaching directors role.
i dunno about you, but id *kinda* like to see Lockyer finish his playing career, have some time off, and coach some kids/reserve grade for a few years before we start talking about him coaching the Broncos. so maybe in around 2018 or so?

^^^ This

I am not yetconvinced that Lockyer will make a good coach in any case (the great players rarely do); but if it's what he wants to do, then I'd like to see this kind of process followed and preferrably with an "apprenticship" outside of the Broncos system

Totally agree with this as well, like any top line player becoming a coach I think Locky would struggle to come to terms with others not being able to see the things which come so naturally to him but if WB thinks he can do it who are we to disagree.

As far as the return of WB is concerned I believe it is all but done. Paul White has met with News and sorted the problems there and WB has already indicated who his preferred coaching staff are and who he wants gone.

Pretty sure they are. icon_thumbs_u

If that is the case gotta feel for Griffin. Paul White is mates with Griffin so I would imagine Griggin will be looked after in any case.

YEP. The way has been cleared, that is the direction things are headed I am told.
There is always a chance of a big money offer but I believe WB will be back at Brisabane

I didn't ask as I would not have got an answer.

Bruno Cullen won't block Wayne Bennett's Bronco move

THEY shared a testy relationship at times, which has left many believing it will stop Wayne Bennett from returning to the Brisbane Broncos.
But former Broncos chief executive and current director Bruno Cullen says he will not block a fairytale return by Bennett to the famous club.

Cullen also slammed suggestions he has fallen out with the supercoach.

" I'd be very disappointed if I'm perceived to be some type of protagonist about him not coming back to the Broncos," Cullen said.

"If the current board of the Brisbane Broncos Ltd employed Wayne as coach, I wouldn't have any problems with that whatsoever."

I reckon there will be a vacancy in Townsville next year that he could write his own cheque for.
