Game I Post-Game Discussion Thread

Inglis just hasn't been getting any good ball in the centres for the last 2 years, if not more. I think he's a better fullback than Slater, but breaking up the big 3's combination is probably premature...so how about playing with 2 fullbacks in attack? Inglis is one of our main weapons, we need him playing in his best position.

Can't believe the commentators were encouraging diving, pissed me off that the trainer was in there as well.

Overall we played bad they played good. Game on grubs

Sorry will never agree with that, to me if Tates hand is facing his own goaline the ball can only go one way and that is backwards from the hand then it hits Hoffman but like I said I can't blame the refs for calling it like that, at least it's consistent with how they make similar calls.

Haha, ok whatever. Sort of sounds like the rulebook knock on thread all over again. It isn't like a pass, ball hits Tate (small but does) and hits an opposing player in front of him, knock on.

Could argue it all night, look at your own flick, Tates hand is past Hoffmans head facing backwards and his arm is moving backwards, it can only be a knock back. BUT like have said I don't expect the refs to stop the game and look at these types of things.

I'm gonna start with my opinion on the players.

On the grubs side:
Luke Lewis absolutely deserved MOM tonight, he was outstanding!
Greg Bird, Jennings, Hoffman and Hayne (when he wasn't diving) were also very very good, while the rest did their job.
Pearce and Maloney are meh and won't ever really worry me to be honest.

On the Mighty Maroons side:
Parker and Hodges were excellent.
Cameron Smith tried his hardest to lead a pack that certainly lacked punch, but was also very limited by the ***** in pink, but more about that later.
The bench was the least of our worries, although McQueen is probably a bit light for this arena.
The worst players on the park were Inglis (who barely saw any ball), a clearly underdone Thurston, and Cronk who played the worst game I've ever seen from a Qld halve. And he still was as good as Pearce!

Yes, NSW out enthused us, yes, Qld's forwards lacked punch, and yes the Jennings try cannot happen at Origin level, that was 3 missed and 2 ineffective tries in one single play! But that was only part of what won the game for NSW...

What I find totally unacceptable is that the refs use two different measures to police the teams.
I just watched the first 20 minutes of the game again to ensure I wasn't influenced by my maroon glasses, and not once, I mean not ONCE, was NSW onside during a Qld play the ball. On the other hand, that absolutely worthless unwashed wandeling ball sack named Klein was keeping the Qld line 12, 13 meters continuously back.
In a game of such high energy and speed, that is a devastating advantage for a team, especially one who already came out with more energy like NSW.
Add to that the Hoffman knock on, the Gallen episode and the amount of soft get out of jail penalties gifted to NSW, and I think Qld did pretty well to lose only by 14-6.

With a fit Thurston and the Qld public behind us, I hope the refs return the favour at Suncorp, so we can send them packing with 30 or 40 in the bag.

Now to the Qld approach...
I don't know how much influence the lack of go forward and the crappy game from our halves influenced things, but we absolutely botched our game plan, which I hope was to involve Inglis much more than we did, and certainly didn't include a let's take it slow and let them get a roll on us from the start. Some of it was imposed, but I hope this gets corrected come game 2.
Also, we need Parker in the starting team and Harrison out. The latter seems to no longer have what this level requires, and hopefully Hannant will be back to give us that extra go forward.
I would also definitely drop McQueen (who btw did nothing wrong, but added too little), for someone who can hit hard and who can run with purpose like Papalii. Keep Gillett and Te'o as well, who did a pretty good job in their spells.

Nothing of what I saw tonight makes me doubt we'll be celebrating 8 in a row!

The guy would be writing his article on the fly. He probably saw 2 replays at the ground and made a call from what he saw.

On Fox Sport after the game at about 10.10, they were discussing the game & Danny Buderus was on the panel & he said it was the wrong call.

I really think DCE should be one of the bench spots. 4 running forwards are a bit overkill. Both Farah and Smith were clearly struggling with about 20 to go. We even had Slater fill in at hooker for a bit.

As for DCE, he's one of the best defensive halves in the comp. He definitely won't let us down in that area. He'd probably do better than Gillett! He can give Smith a rest, replace an injured or a struggling half, or just add extra ball playing to a side that lacks it. And let's be honest, if one of your halves gets injured or isn't performing well, that's usually the game right there.

As for NSW, they beat us with their footwork, not their size. For a small pack, we still just couldn't keep up with the likes of Lewis, Bird or Watmough.

So yeah, basically I'd personally have a bench that looks a bit like this

14. DCE
15. Papalli
16. Hannant
17. Parker

Which just isn't going to happen, since they won't drop all 3 of Gillett, Te'o and McQueen.

I thought Gillett, T'eo and McQueen played well and deserve their spot. Some of Gillett's tackling was superb.

Overall, for a lot of the game, I though Mal adopted the Bronco game plan: slow line speed, way too much one out crap.

Cronk? WTF? A terrible game. Where are the well worked combos of the Melbourne spine? Half the time, neither Cronk nor Thurston knew WTF was going on.

The main reason NSW won was because we gave them too much room. Hmmmmm .... sounds very Bronco like

When Thurston took some control, Qld improved a lot in attack.

Harrison out, Papalli in is my only change, with Inglis playing from the back in attack a lot lot more.

It was very Broncos like. Like I said, their footwork was deadly, and our linespeed was mostly horrific. Not a good combination...and very familiar.

Gallen will miss a week with an early plea for striking.

Gallen should have been sent off. Simple as that.

And his holier than thou attitude sucks big time. He's a pig

Inglis has to be fullback in game two - has to be!

He is by far our biggest weapon and is absolutely wasted in the centres. Get Chambers in there as his replacement.

Glad I'm not the only one who thought Cronk was rubbish. Really dreadful performance from him.

NSW were clearly the better team, but Porthoz is spot on about NSW being offside a number of times, whilst the Qld 10 metres was more like 12-13 metres. I was in the back row of the stadium, on halfway (**** it was a long way away), but it was obvious from there that the refs were not at all consistent with the 10 metre rule.

Yeah, and according to the articles in the Media, Smith was filthy at the refs for that very reason as well.

Having to do 20% more work every set than the opposition just takes its toll, and NSW definitely took advantage of that as well.

Doesn't excuse everything, especially not the abysmal performance by the halves...

Just to balance out my point about the home field reffing - I thought we received the most blatant wrong call of the night with Hodges being allowed to play on despite clearly being out over the sideline.

Quote to finish off the night

Of his forward rotation, Meninga said: "I was happy with the bench, I thought they were incisive for us. Corey Parker created some second phase, Ben Te'o's first effort was excellent and Chris McQueen had an outstanding game on debut."

Our halves and kicking game were extremely poor. I can't see Cronk getting dropped but another game like that and DCE deserves a shot.

Inglis needs to touch the ball more, we gotta get him involved. Swap him in at fullback, get them guessing FFS!

Our forwards were below par. Scott took some decent hit ups, Shillington was very disappointing. We need another big body (Hannant if fit) because putting a fatigued Thaiday or Myles into the front row doesn't help our cause. Harrison has got to go, I'm sorry he doesn't bring anything to the team - Parker does the same job but a lot better - hats off to Corey Parker, I used to bag the shit out of him and hated him getting picked but he's really come into his own in Origin. Papalii onto the bench. Harrison and one of Gillett/McQueen is out. Both of those guys played good footy, but again they are both similar so it's a case of who is playing better, suits us better.

Paul Gallen. Fucking grub ****. Whinging about what's happened in years gone by is beyond laughable, you are a fucking joke. Everyone talks him up as this superhuman, courageous enforcer; it's a total load of shite. He's happy to dish it out but he can't cop it. Myles did nothing in that tackle, this grub comes in with a swinging arm and then puts two on Myles' chin with his hands by his side. Dog act of the highest order. We had multiple opportunities to get square with a cannonball tackle at his stuffed knee and never took it, disappointing.

The precedent has been set now - game two all bets are off. Gallen is gonna get what's coming to him and after that cowardly refereeing performance tonight they can't do shit about it. If Gallen makes it off Lang Park either a) still conscious or b) all the ligaments in his injured knee intact I'm gonna be disappointed we didn't go into bat for Nate.
