Henjak WTF!

Carlaw was bought as a very cheap experienced forward to provide some depth and for the young guys to learn off training beside him, he will start the year at wynnum and baring injury to our top 12 or so forwards wont see too much first grade.

Champion is ordinary.

He scored plenty of tries last year playing for Souths. Souths. Didn't he also play City Origin? There are plenty of worse centres in the NRL.

Also, Champion is not worth 300k. Not worth 200k. He'd be worth about 140k. I'd have him here in a heartbeat for the right cash.

It depends on the side, for a side with plenty of depth in the centres no, but a side like the Eels that has had key backs leave their backline and they don't have the depth to cover such losses its a different thing altogether and they might be prepared to pay more to do so.

Yep I agree. For us he wouldn't be worth 300k though.[/quote:tnquv6lp]

Yes but from his perspective it would be more rewarding to go to a club where he earns more, stays in Sydney and has a higher chance of being in the side then going to a club where competition for his position is high, with less money and the chance of home sickness setting in.

AFTER establishing himself as the best back-rower in the NRL last season and one of the competition's premier players, bustling Bronco Sam Thaiday could find himself in the front-row with gun recruit Ben Hannant in 2011.
Brisbane coach Ivan Henjak says the attraction of a Thaiday-Hannant wall up front is quite appealing although he points out the club's prop stocks have not looked better for a few years.

Thaiday's career-best season in the No.11 jumper, playing an average 71 minutes, making 115m and 30 tackles a game, had him seriously challenging for rugby league's prestigious Golden Boot, taken out by Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall.

Henjak, facing several difficult selection calls in the forward pack and the backline - where they have to replace AFL defector Israel Folau, wouldn't rule out a positional change for Thaiday if it was "best for the team".

"We've got some good back-rowers there and wide running forwards so a good one would miss out if Sam plays in the second-row," he said.

Henjak is keen to give 2010 discovery and NRL rookie of the year Matt Gillett a permanent place in the second row, while Ben Te'o, Alex Glenn and former premiership winner Dane Carlaw, back from the UK, are in contention.

Corey Parker, the team's goal kicker, is the first choice lock.

"It's a possibility," said Henjak.

"But Nick Kenny and Scotty Anderson are training well while Mitchell Dodds and Josh McGuire are looking more like NRL players with their body shapes having put on a few kilos.

"Our front-row stocks are as healthy as they've been for a few years."

Henjak admitted Thaiday would still want to play a wide-running style but he was sure he'd do whatever was best for the team.

"I'm sure Sam won't have an issue with it. If he has to play up front, he'll do that.

"His game might change up a little. He mightn't be required to play the minutes he has and we might get a lot more quality out of him."

Meanwhile Henjak said it was great seeing new recruit Hannant and centre Justin Hodges, recovering from an Achilles injury that prevented him playing in 2010, in full training before Christmas.

"Those two guys' experience add so much to our squad and when we get Locky (Darren Lockyer) and Sammy (Thaiday) back we'll be even better," he said.

"Both guys are training hard and contributing to our young players."

Finding Folau's replacement is a challenge with a number of players already pushing hard for his spot, including Gerard Beale, flyer Dane Gagai and dark horse Jack Reed, a smart looking prospect from Norths' Queensland Cup side.

"They can all do the maths, they know there's stiff competition and some are going to miss out," Henjak said.

"That's always good for players' preparations knowing they have to work hard and have a good attitude."

"It's an interesting puzzle because Dane Carlaw can play out, so can Alex Glenn, he's an option, and Gillett and Te'o can both play out there.

"We've still got some things to work out but it will all be clearer once we play some trials."

Stuff Champion, dude is like a glass cannon and give us Farrell!

As for that other article, don't do it Henjak - make Thaiday the best second row in the comp!

I still think Thaiday could do just as well in the front row. Currently the best 2nd rower in the game, it's hard to think of him moving from there but if he can put in the same sort of form in the front row then why not? Thaiday and Hannant up front, Teo, Parker and Gillett in the back row...pretty epric if we can somehow get those players in the starting line up at once.

I like Tronc as a starting prop though. If Sam is an 80 minute player these days he's better off in the back row imo.

Problem I see with that is your denying Gillett(unless you drop Te'o or Parker to the bench but I think thats messing with the balance of the starting forward pack) the move into the backrow and not providing him with the opportunity to cement that position for which he certainly earnt on form in 2010 and showed his capable of playing as an 80 minute player, he also provides an area to the backrow thats lacking, the ballplaying ability which is something we should want to see introduced to help provide options for our playmakers. Personally I think with the depth we have in the backrow allows us to play Thaiday at starting prop with no loss to the quality of the backrow and can strengthen our frontrow and also gives us the option to play experienced props like Kenny and Tronc from the bench which improves the balance of the forward pack overall.

8. Hannant
9. McCollough
10. Thaiday
11. Gillett
12. Te'o
13. Parker

14. Hunt
15. Glenn
16. Tronc
17. Kenny/Anderson/Mcguire/Dodds/Hala etc

Eitherway can I just say its great to have Hannant back!

Correct.

Why weaken the back row by moving the best back rower in the game to prop? Stupid call.

This year proved a Thaiday on the fringe who can not have to get through as much shit in the middle = a Thaiday who runs damaging lines and doesn't look for a QPTB surrender.

Plenty of props here Henjak, use them not Sammy!!!

Weakening the backrow, I'd hardly call a backrow of Te'o, Gillett and Parker "weakening" the backrow especially when Te'o can fill the role of Thaiday, Gillett strengthens the backrow with try scoring ability and ballplaying skills and Parker who had his best season in quite sometime doing plenty of working in defence, making plenty of metres to take pressure of the frontrowers.

As for their being plenty of frontrowers, take away Hannant and Tronc and I wouldn't say the frontrower's that were utilised in 2010 were all that impressive, previously when there was no need to play Thaiday in the frontrow and it weakened the backrow I would agree, but with the depth we have in the backrow I'd have to say not giving Gillett the opportunity to play in the backrow fulltime who showed in 2010 his more then capable of playing there is a missed opportunity.

This!!! Playing Thaiday at prop is a massive waste unless he has the Dave Taylor style role we used in 2009.

Not really with the talent available in the backrow, bringing Hannant back who can make plenty of hitups/metres and Parker who made the most metres of any forward at the Broncos in 2010 by some margin can take pressure off Thaiday who can be selective in the amount of hitups he can take and still can play his normal widerunning game. He also won't need to play the full 80 mins and can be rotated keeping him more effective during the match. The bottomline is there more then enough talent in the backline, but we need to get our frontrow in order and if that means Thaiday starting there then so be it, in the end what matters is whats best for the team not just one player, just as Lockyer did shifting from fullback to 5/8th.

Didn't he play a lot of front row in 2009, where he wasn't all that effective. Then in 2010 when he moved back to second row, he became one of the most talked about players in the game?

Lockyer struggled initially too when he went from fullback to 5/8th and the big talk was he was past it and was the wrong move, we went on to win a premiership because we stuck with it. With the depth the Broncos have in the backrow(Thaiday wasn't the only outstanding backrower in 2010 for us, there are plenty of players who showed their worth for a spot in the backrow) and the questions still exist over existing frontrowers at the club after their efforts in 2010 so Henjak wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't examine the possibility.

It's worth considering given we have some awesome backrows on our books...but I hope Henjak comes to his senses and lets Sam play his natural game, he was showing some great growth as a player in the second row.

And theres no reason he can't continue showing that great growth as a player in the frontrow while at the sametime allowing Gillett to be given the opportunity to provide us with real ballplaying options and to continue developing in the forwards giving us a better balanced forward pack overall.

So leaving Thaiday in the 2nd row would mean we need to find space as well for Gillett, Teo, Parker, Glenn, Hunt otherwise one of those players will play for another club... actually forget Parker he won't go anywhere.
