Does anyone think that if we knew what the cap was going to be leading into the next few years that we would have had a better chance of keeping him by being able to give an extra 300k or so per year?

Hear that Broncos fans?

That's what dodging a bullet sounds like.

Thanks for the service Benny, you steered us through a very difficult period and I'll always be grateful for your service.

Now who's going to help me send out an SOS to Jayden?

Bennett factor at work here. Benny Hunt is off to retire on a good wicket. You can't blame him.

What do you mean dodging a bullet?!?!?! How will we ever win another game without Hunt?? Hunt was our gun, there's no bullets without a gun :( :( :( :thebadmantookbaxter:

Despite arguing constantly about Hunt (Mostly because a lot of the things said were wrong), I've always said if someone better than him comes along we should let him go. The problem was finding someone who is better. None of the players off contract next year have game management skills. Luke Brooks couldn't manage his way out of a wet paper bag and I don't want Pearce at the club. Milford isn't nearly god-like enough to carry someone like Shane Perry to a premiership.

So now we have lost Hunt, Bennett was aiming for a premiership in 2016-2017 (Which makes the last two seasons development seasons). What are our real halfback options?

Benji Marshall? No thanks
Kodi? Obvious downgrade as a running half
Jayden? Same thing
Ash Taylor? If he comes he's now the best option. Still can't tackle and his 2016 season was severely overhyped due to a few peoples agendas but I suppose he would currently be the best option.

Someone start the Kodi Nikorima VS Ash Taylor thread now please.

Anyone who can tell the backline where to stand and tell Macca when to get the ball out of the forward pack will do just fine.

Wasn't Benji in the top 5 for a Dally M two years ago? The Dragons are a basket case of a club, so it's hard to judge him based on his form last year, the same applies for Sims and people on here savaging him for his form last season. Benji can't control a game, but we don't really need him to with our spine (it's not like Hunt is a controlling half); if he can contribute a bit of flair and a big boot then he'll be handy enough if we somehow don't sign a half for 2018.

Problem solved, All we need is Alfie. He is on the field enough as it is.

I've added plenty over the last 12 months, as you're well aware. I've never rated Hunt half as much as most people on here, I was hoping that we would sign someone for 2018 before he left, but that hasn't been the case unfortunately. Nevertheless, I also agree that we dodged a MASSIVE bullet by not matching that Dragons offer, there's literally a 0% chance that he is worth that contract with what he's shown in his career. I applaud him for taking it, hopefully for his sake he doesn't suck as much as he did for us in 2016, because if he does, he'll be playing for Catalans by 2020.

On the topic of "What do we do now that our almighty saviour Ben Hunt is gone?!?" - We're the fucking Broncos and we have fucking Wayne Bennett. Do I need to say more? We'll get someone, and it'll be someone good.

I actually think Peter Wallace would go well, but he'll probably retire by the time his current contract is up.
If we signed Peter Wallace i'd start following Netball instead. Bloke is a very average half who has found some success, albeit minor, at hooker.
