I dont understand how Lockyer's not even mentioned, and it looks like a certainty he will miss out...
how??????
obviously judging by my username, I'm a huge fan, but If he hasn't been one of the best 3 players over the last 10 years on a consistent basis... jesus,
Joey, lockyer, fittler and Langer.... if two have to named from that era it has to be joey and locky... !!

I don't think it's for active players is it?

Any player in the top 100 players of the century can be selected. Lockyer is the only current player on that list.

Re: Immortals named tonight

Locky unfortunately would be considered a five-eigth, and he won't be rated better than Wally.

Reading the papers around the place it appears Johns is high favourite for the halfback spot. I think that's great, do drugs and win only two premierships and get named the best. Perfect example for the kids. [icon_shru

Still think it's touch and go that Lazo is expected to be a "certainty" for a prop spot over Webcke tbh.

For all of Beetson's failings since he retired (and there is more than a few of those), his on-field feats were nothing short of amazing.

mick neither will be in the side when you have props like Duncan Hall and Noel Kelly and Beetson and Mick Madsen ahead of them.

Strong reports that Lazo and Beetson are the likely prop pairing mate.

Re: Immortals named tonight

Locky was named as a contender for it. But his biggest downfall in these sorts of things is due to the fact that he's played his career, or will have when it ends, in two very different positions for similar amounts of time.

If he had remained a fullback, he'd go very close to pipping some greats for the spot imo. But he will always be overlooked in the #6 when history is taken into account. Nothing stopping him from getting a bench role in the future, I guess...

Re: Immortals named tonight

Unfortunately I've never watched Wally.
I've heard the 'dominated' Origin over 10 years story many times, but I've also heard he was nothing out of the box as a club player?
regardless I won't comment much on that, I suppose Locky would def get the #6 over him if it was a broncos thing.

Anyway, well what do you guys think?
Lockyer not being in the 17? yay or nay?

I don't know, it just seems wrong

I think most people (excluding Broncos fans too) believe Webcke was better than Lazo.[/quote:ph9ekb3r]
Like I said before mate I think its because he was the sort of bloke that where ever he went a premiership followed.

To bad about the demons of the field. Its been said he left Canberra after knocking up a poor girl, Webcke would never do that. Webcke is probs the best role model ever to play NRL.

Re: Immortals named tonight

Lockyer won't get picked because of his position change and would have been a huge chance if he had stayed at fullback and also the fact Lockyer is a terrible defender as a 5/8th means he has no chance as well. Johns probably deserves to be there he won 4 Dally M's, 2 Premierships, 1 Clive Churchill, Won a fair few origin games for NSW and tests for Aust don't care what he does off the field and I don't care he is a bit of a dick he is probably the best candidate well he or Sterling. If Lazarus doesn't make the side I will be disappointed the guy was a machine and played 80 minutes every week, always one of the first to chase a kick and cover in defense despite his huge frame and so damaging with the football.

Re: Immortals named tonight

Unless he gets named tonight, I am certain now that Allan Langer is the most under-rated player of all time.

That is a bit of a stretch. I love the guy but he (his size didn't help) was not a great defender where Johns was an amazing one, his passing game wasn't quite as good and he didn't have the long kicking game Johns has. Running the ball and the short kicking games were of similar levels and they had similar levels of intelligence and awareness.

Yeh but the stuff he did at all levels at the game and the way he was dominant for so long, he was a genuine match-winner. To say his passing game wasn't as good as Johns is a massive call also.

No doubt in my mind that Langer was more dominant at Origin and International Level than Johns ever was. He came into it in 1987 and kept performing until 1998, and who could forget the way he came back to play that awesome game in 2001. Absolute champion.

I agree with you Langer was amazing and I love the guy. He certainly dominated the game longer than Johns did but I think Johns dominated matches so incredibly sometimes with very little help. At Newcastle he has had some pretty average sides play with him and managed to win games to get them to the finals. Passing is very close but I personally think Johns was so creative both long and short, he definately has a better long passing game than Langer probably not short. Langer never really needed a long pass as he had Kevvie there for that.

Re: Immortals named tonight

Personally, Sterling is the best halfback the game has seen IMO, and I've only really seen a lot of footy from those that played 1980 onwards.

I don't think the omission of Langer, Webcke or ANYONE for that matter in a team like this would mean they're underrated. 17 players from 100 years? STREWTH!

Much easier, but still difficult, is the task of picking those "team of the decade" sides. Langer was in there for the 1990's, and that's a rating enough for me!

Re: Immortals named tonight

Too many good players in the past to pick a team that would satisfy the majority of fans. How do you choose between Langlands, Eadie, Lockyer...and that is just fullbacks!

Mate, if I had to pick an Aussie team TOMORROW I'd get a headache when it comes to choosing between Slater/Hunt/Stewart/Gidley. I've got no farrking idea how you could pick over 100 years...

Langer wasnt a good defender? He may of had an unorthodox style, but it was very effective! He didnt miss many tackles

Re: Immortals named tonight

I agree Matt, let's not forget they changed the rules to stop his technique. Not too many individuals can claim something like that.

So Bellamy's best coach then? [icon_razz1

Re: Immortals named tonight

No matter what 17 players you pick you are never, ever, EVER going to have a 17 man team that everyone can agree on. Seriously its hard enough to pick a team of the decade or a rep team let alone a team that covers 100 years that satisfies everybody!!!
