Immortals named tonight *team named on page 2*

Re: Immortals named tonight

Well no real surprises so far

1. Clive Churchill
2. Ken Irvine
3. Reg Gasnier
4. Mal Meninga
5. Brian Bevan
6. The King
7. Joey Johns
8. Artie Beetson
9. Noel Kelly
10. Duncan Hall
11. Norm Provan
12. Ron Coote
13. John Raper

Only surprise for me was probably Coote over Frank Burge but then the selection panel was probably more NSW based than Qld.

Reserves
14. Graham Langlands
15. Dally Massenger
16. Bob Fulton
17. Frank Burge

Salary cap of close to $20m

Re: Immortals named tonight

Coach to go. I'd go Jack Gibson and not sure if they name a captain or not, if so probably Wally or The Little Master.

Why would that make a difference mate? They are both Blues arent they?

Good team no massive surprises, happy to get one player to play for the Broncos in there anyway! Happy that Mal got picked ahead of Bozo or Kenny, etc.

I always thought of Burge as a Qlder for some reason

Gibson was the coach by the way, and well deserved.

^What he said.I thought Alfie may have got the spot.
Where is Billy Smith?Happy to see Kenny Irvine on the wing.

Will Beetson accept the jacket considering his comments?

Will be a lot of talk and opinions given around the pubs and clubs today with the team. All good for league icon_thumbs_u

What an honor to all chosen.
To be seen with the green and gold jacket on will be a photo to be cherished throughout generations for all families of the chosen team

Don't care what anyone says, WB should've been coach icon_thumbs_u

Never mind, he'll win his seventh with St George and will never be overlooked again!

What is Jack Gibson's record as coach?

I think he won 4 premierships, but its more that he revolutionised coaching techniques.. from what i've been told.

I believe (and I might be mixing stories) that he pioneered the concept of coaching by statistics. He was the first to measure ball control etc, and made that a focal point of his teams' performances.

Pffft. I'm glad he got picked, because now he's indisputably the most overrated player of all time. His name sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the names of those legends.

Sterling utterly ripped off IMO.

I'd agree with that. It's the only change I'd make to the side - heaps of players were unlucky but I couldn't make a strong enough case for any of them to bump anyone else out of the side.

A struck match between Gibson and Bennett for coach but fair enough to go with Jack

I don't think you can really argue with Johns inclusion, how old were guys when sterlo retired? Can't of seem much of him and play and been old enough to really judge him. Johns was voted by a jury of his footballing peers, who would have get so see both of them in their prime. The judges clearly weren't biased players fresh in their mind either.

did any one read this article... apparently the NSW selectors are whinging that 5 QLDers made the team.

QUEENSLAND judges have been accused of manipulating the voting for the Team of the Century that left some New South Wales icons either benched or snubbed.

Five Queenslanders made the prestigious side - four of them highly contentious decisions against better performed NSW players.

The five Queenslanders are props Duncan Hall and Arthur Beetson with Noel Kelly at hooker in an all-Maroons front row. Wally Lewis is at five-eighth with Mal Meninga a centre.

The selection casualties from NSW include forwards Glenn Lazarus, Ian Walsh, Ray Stehr and Sandy Pearce.

"I was stunned by the way it turned out," one selector said last night.

"How is Meninga a centre when (Graeme) Langlands and (Bob) Fulton are on the bench?"

Another said: "I just hope everyone voted to their conscience."

Meninga's selection ahead of Langlands and Fulton says immortality is fleeting.

The team was named last night at a gala function to celebrate the game's centenary. It was to be the premier event of festivities, but the tone of the team and the selection of what many pundits will see as less-qualified Queenslanders was upsetting.

The team, by its very nature and its extensive parameters of considering 100 players drawn from different eras with different rules and different demands, was always going to be contentious. But it was never expected to be as arguable as it turned out.

Queensland has been living with accusations of conspiracy and voting in a bloc since the voting day last December.

One Queenslander among the 28 selectors had a list of Queensland players he was going to vote for alongside him.

By voting in a bloc, the Queenslanders were able to take advantage of any split votes among NSW representatives. It would have given Meninga and Lewis a flying start for inclusion because NSW votes might have been divided between contenders such as Dave Brown, Fulton, Steve Rogers, Reg Gasnier, Langlands and Dally Messenger.
