It's a rap...2017 Review

There were too many games during the season where our most potent strike weapon - James Roberts - simply did not see any ball.

And yet he still finished with 18 tries in his best ever season. This sums up my frustration with the current team. There is so much ability in it and for whatever reason it isn’t allowed to be shown...

When talking about attacking structure I mean the lack of bodies in motion, creation of inside channel running, we sometimes play too much catch and pass rather than running onto the ball.
As others have mentioned we lack genuine size with our forwards, one or two big boopers would be great.

Big off season coming up. If Niko is gonna be halfback then he needs to start half back lessons 101 from day dot. Get someone like locky in to school him on when to kick, what to kick and how to kick. Take him through on what is required for different situations and just drill it into him all off season. Milford should attend this class too. As for bennett, we need to ask whether a near 70 year old can still mix it with the younger thinkers of the game. It's always talked about how age catches up with the players and they slow down. Well the same surely has to apply to a coach

With a small pack and poor game managers and probably low football IQ the only way we were going to win the premiership was to play similarly to the way we did when we blew the Roosters away.

Unfortunately as it turned out we weren't saving that gameplan for the finals and against the top sides we never came close to matching that effort again.

Has a coach ever been sacked after coming third on the ladder and being one win away from a grand final?

I'd like to see TPJ at lock next year ala Taomololo, put bird in beside Oates.

And if Locky could teach Milford and Knik how to kick for field position In The off season maybe, just maybe we could go 1 better next year.

Injuries killed us this year. And I think perhaps a few egos. Quit partying and thinking you all dat ffs

Could KNik do a Cronk (no I'm. It comparing them) and turn himself into a halfback through sheer dedication and work ethic?

He can run and pass and has shown glimpses of a very raw kicking game. He has the dedication and work ethic, let's just wait and see.

For me what our biggest issue has been is the type of player at the club. There is a certain attribute that some players have that I can't quite name, and our lack of this kind of player has bothered me for awhile.

It's an intangible that I can't explain but will try to via example. Lockyer had it more than any player I know of, Smith has it.

Previously we had guys like Webke, Tallis, Tate, and more recently Parker. Hodges had a lot of it. Thaiday kind of has it, but whatever 'it' is has been fading in him for the past few years. It's players that ARE the club.

Bulldogs had (and have made a huge mistake losing) Graham, and Reynolds.
Storm - smith, Cronk
Cowboys - JT&JT, Scott, Morgan
Eels - Norman, Gutho
Roosters - Pearce
Souths - Burgess, Inglis, Reynolds
Manly - DCE, Trbo bros
Warriors - Mnnering, Johnson

It's not just skill or leadership, it's a different thing, it's an embodiment of the club. It's the player that all that teams fans indentify with.

Outside of Gillo, Boyd, Thaiday who do you really see as a true Bronco in our current squad? Who is the player that typifies the club? Milford? Moose? Where is strong personality to build a culture around? Who do I emotionally invest in as a fan?

Outside of that shpeal I think third is pretty good, especially with all our spine reshuffling. I think we are just short a big line bending prop and a controlling half.

McCullough was outplaying Friend big time and was no.2 for the Aus and QLD slot before he got injured. Just imagine the Roosters if they lost Friend. That should put the gravity of his absence into perspective.

Blair was good for the money he was on, but we can do better and will do better with Lodge or Offa, who finished the season very well, coming in. Haven't seen much of Mago or whatever that Cows prop we're apparently signing is called, but he's rated highly. Bird is a winner, and we need more of them. Fifita and Haas are both rated extremely highly, and Carrigan looks good. I'd like another HB like Tyrone Roberts just in case Niko doesn't work out, but if he improves his kicking he will be world class.

I think the future is bright for us.

Missing McCoullough did hurt the Broncos massively. While he might not be Cameron Smith... nobody is Cameron Smith. With him you do get a guy who holds the sides in defence and offers plenty of other components and was having arguably his best season.

It wouldn't have made one bit of difference IMHO.

Running and passing is great but not the only criteria for a quality halfback or 5/8th. Plenty of players in the NRL in positions that aren't in the spine that are capable of that. Reading the opposition, calling the plays and managing the forwards and the backline, possessing a real kicking games(Milford's is at best a mixed bag and Nikorima's kicking game doesn't instill me with any faith, he doesn't show any real vision of where it should go or even have variety in the kicks he puts up). All areas we got found out last night and plenty of times this season I'm afraid.

Out of the two, Milford is the senior and on the big bucks, time for him to step up to that next level. Takes more then just running the ball to really be a first class halfback or 5/8th.

You're talking about old school players that had "it". They just cared more, were tougher as men and would be filthy if they didn't give 100%. It's a generational thing where the new crop are raised to think they're all that before they've proven anything. They spit the dummy if something doesn't go their way. Look at Michael Jordan, the goat. Had to earn respect and the dollars where as kids in the NBA get massive bucks straight outta college based on unproven talent.

It's the same thing here, the new kids like ash Taylor have done squat in the game but have a big old sook over what they think they're worth. But that gives me hope that maybe nikorima could have the temperament to be great.
