Broncos Ready To Swoop For Roberts - Rugby League Week
Broncos Ready To Swoop For Roberts - Rugby League Week
Written by THE MOLE , December 8, 2015
ONE of the elite clubs in the NRL could get even stronger in 2016 with reports the Broncos are interested in signing boom free agent centre James Roberts.
Roberts, who knocked back a revised two-year deal from the Titans worth a reported $350,000 per season, is viewed by Wayne Bennett as the ideal replacement for the retired Justin Hodges at right centre and it is believed the club could make the 22-year-old an offer in the coming days.
In order to table a competitive offer the Broncos will likely have to shift a number of players which could result in the release of backline duo Dale Copley and Lachlan Maranta – both off-contract at the end of 2016.
Bennett has long been an admirer of the speedster and the master coach also has a history of developing and getting the best out of players with a checkered past.
Despite being sacked from the Rabbitohs and the Panthers for disciplinary reasons, Roberts seemingly managed to put his off-field troubles behind him in 2016 – scoring a club record 16 tries and claiming Dally M centre of the year honours in his first season for the Titans.
Throughout 2015 Roberts attributed much of his success to his partner and extended family throughout the Ballina region.
In addition to joining a premiership contender the lure of remaining close to family could play a big part in Roberts defecting to the Broncos.
The Dragons, Eels, Warriors and Knights are all openly hunting a strike back and will also likely reach out to Roberts and his management.
As for the Titans, they will now turn their attention to Samoa international Tim Lafai, who was granted a release from the final two years of his Bulldogs contract to accommodate the arrival of Will Hopoate.
Back to Souths, release Inglis?
Josh Massoud, the reporter who did the Mundine story, said on Twitter that he's confident he'll go to the Broncos.
DALLY M centre of the year James Roberts is poised to sign with Brisbane while former Manly centre Peta Hiku is close to joining Phil Gould’s Penrith Panthers.
And Gold Coast Titans are continuing to pursue former Bulldogs centre Tim Lafai although he may be reluctant to leave Sydney.
The Daily Telegraph understands Roberts is leaning towards joining Wayne Bennett at the Broncos.
Roberts, who walked out on Gold Coast this week after a forged contract drama, has told friends he wants to play under Bennett, win a competition, play State of Origin and represent Australia. He feels he can achieve all these goals at Brisbane.
Souths, Cronulla, Parramatta and St George Illawarra have shown interest in Roberts. Those close to Roberts believe he could fall back into some bad habits off the field by returning to Sydney.
Boxing champ, former NRL star and Roberts’ cousin, Anthony Mundine, has been advising the young centre and said Bennett would be the perfect fit. Mundine played under Bennett during one season at Brisbane.
“I was coached by Wayne and he knows how to get the best out of his players,’’ Mundine told The Daily Telegraph on Tuesday night. “I’ve always believed football is like boxing where the simpler things are, the better it is.
“Wayne is one of the best coaches out there, and it’s not just his coaching, but how he deals with individuals, and that’s what sets him apart from everyone else. and why he generates the respect from the players.”
