NEWS Kodi all but finished as Broncos halfback

See, the very same stuff I see, I have to disagree. I think he's a 14, or a brick layer.

As for before first grade. It really doesn't mean a thing. We could have 500 teams in the comp if players were picked on lower grade potential.
Well, you didn't see anything in Jordan Kahu or Ashley Taylor either...

We're not talking about whether a lower grade player can make it in FG, but about a First Grade player (selected by Wayne Bennett) best position. Based on his past, it's Fullback.

Thankfully common sense has occurred.

The situation Kodi now finds himself in is not ideal. Hes not big enough for a fullback and will always get steam rolled in high balls, his defence is weak against bigger guys especially 1v1...so his only real option is to be a utility or hooker. He could make a good hooker if his defence improved long term.
I like the call of him becoming a specialist hooker, just look at Damien Cook.

Without looking at the stats I'd say they're of similar stature and I never thought he would be able to pump out 80mins without being trampled in defence. I believe his juniors days were as a halfback/ fullback as well.

Cook's defence in the middle isn't all that special either he just commits to getting his body in front of the big men and providing enough before the help arrive, which is basically how Kodi currently defends in the middle

Kodi got a shot, I don’t think he made a good fist of it. Can’t find a spot for the bloke. Either play off the bench or run your luck at another club.

Even playing off the bench for him has to run it's course.

As a coach, I'd be looking to eventually upgrade.

No it's not. Thaiday is only there out of loyalty, not because he can bring anything more than the other options we have.

I'm not calling for Kodi at Fullback out of loyalty, but because I am absolutely convinced he actually could do a great job there, certainly when compared with who we have now.
I definitely agree that Knik could do a Matty Bowen in the fullback role with one caveat, he would have to choose to be run over. What I mean is he consistently tries to get on an arm but never commits to being directly in front. If he could pluck some courage up or rather raise his level of courage, take one for the team as our last line of defence then yes, he could do a wonderful job at fb. He has all the other skills.

I dunno if it's him not having courage, I think it's more that he just gets easily bamboozled in defence. Plenty of players just stick out their arm when they are beaten, even Hodges used to be the master of it until his later years.

I didn't say he lacked courage, anyone playing first grade has courage. It isn't when he's beaten though or not only then, it's when he has the chance to genuinely get his body in front. He chooses not to do that and as a fullback, a slightly built fullback at that it is something that he absolutely must be prepared to do.

I’m a big fan of Kodi as a player. He said all the right things, always shows a good attitude, and has shown glimpses of very good potential. I was a big supporter of his going into this season and though I didn’t think a halves pairing of Kodi and Milf was ideal, I thought it would work just fine.

Unfortunately though, at this point in the season I’ve been forced to admit that it just wasn’t working. Whether it was the forwards or if we just lacked a plan or structure to get the best out of him and Milf, I don’t know.

At this point I’d prefer Bird in the halves but I really hope Kodi find success either through us in a different position or at another club.

Comparing Kodi with some of the other blokes mentioned in this thread, purely from a stature point-of-view:

Kodi Nikorima 1.74, 85
Matt Bowen 1.75, 85
Damien Cook 1.78, 86
Shaun Berrigan 1.78, 87
Billy Slater 1.78, 89
Corey Thompson 1.79, 92

Those are pretty inflated IMO, subtract at least 10cm from each.

If Bird settles in as 5/8 and frees Milford up to play what’s in front of him then I think Nickorima will have enormous difficulty in regaining a place in the starting side. He’s a defensive liability against fresh Forwards and only seems to shine against a tired defensive line.

I think he’s probably finished as the Broncos #7.

I think he could resume his place and play a similar role to his 2015 season, he was a great addition to the side.

Time at #7 has to be over though.
