Actually you are wrong, they did that with Matty Johns, they also sent him and the other halves down to North Melbourne to receive specialised skill training on their kicking.

He's never been a regular part of our system. We did what was it, 3 or 4 sessions with him iirc in 2019. That's hardly going to have much impact ( and it clearly didnt ) unless it's a regular thing like he did for years at the Storm with their halves, or like Joey say at Parra this year. As a club, it's not really something we have ever done successfully in recent times. We don't even use people like him in a consultancy capacity. It's madness really.

colour me shocked the goal posts shifted.

How am I shifting goalposts? I made a mistake by not making myself clearer about what I meant when I said get in some outside help. I was talking about an appointment to our coaching staff rather than a week or two with somebody. So yep, you got me.

Still changes nothing though. We sent him to Johns for some advice and help. Once that finished, who did we have on hand to keep tweaking his game? If we were doing our job properly, Johns or somebody like him would have been available to us when we need him. He wasn't.

Like it or not, as a club, we could have done a lot more to try to get more out of Milf.

Its a word i'm using a lot, but he's been coasting and he's been allowed to do it. Desire is a great word for what he has lacked. He's been too comfortable on easy street and he hasnt been made accountable.

Thats a fair enough criticism.....although, at the time it was "reported" that Lockyer spoke to him, Milford wasn't in the slump that we saw through 2019-2021. I dunno......all depends how Locky came at him I guess....but its a fair enough statement. Milford was offered help from the Greatest Bronco of all.....and he "reportedly" rejected it.
I think he should have taken the help when it was offered, even if it was just some informal chats about things.
I think if your a player whether your in a form slump or on top of your game if someone of the calibre of Darren Lockyer offers to help you with your game you take it. That's where I see a attitude problem with Milford.

Also Wayne should have forced him to take it.

I'm actually not so sure Locky is actually coaching material tbh, but i do think as a sounding board and somebody to go to for some advice he would have been invaluable for Milf.

Wayne likes to put the responsibility on the players for their actions. He probably should have made him in hindsight but i doubt he would do that sort of thing.

Yes and no. He is renowned as a bloke who gives his players great life advice. If he didn’t give this advice then…wtf? Also if he did give this advice and it was ignored then equally…wtf?

I cant remember, but i think it was something he mentioned he had spoken to him about. I cant actually see why Milf maybe wouldnt have wanted to get the help. He might have felt he could do it by himself and didnt want any Lockyer comparisons. It worked in his first 2 or 3 years, but when things started going south he should have reached out.

Of course he has been.

He had all the hype on him at Canberra, walked into a million dollar deal with us and never really felt threatened until Kevvie walked in.

During the later stages of the year he was actually playing some decent footy for us, the last few games there were quite good.

I dont think he has been made accountable really. He was ordinary in 2019 and kept getting picked, got worse in 2020 and kept getting picked, and even this year kept his place longer than his form warranted. He might not have felt threatened, but thats exactly what i'm talking about, the club should make any under performing player feel their place in the team is in jeopardy and we didnt with Milf .

Its not just his on field form though. We should have demanded more from him in terms of his training and off the field lifestyle. I've seen him have an incident with a fan not too dissimilar to Kotoni Staggs in some respects ( while he was playing the pokies actually ), in front of some senior club people and nothing ever was said about it. I know its not his fault we paid him so much, but once he takes the money there is a certain level of responsibility and expectation he has to accept. I dont think he ever had that expectation put on him.

I’d say more likely Lockyer wanted to work with him once training was over. Extra sessions or something. Red flag.

Havent really seen Locky that keen to get into the coaching side of things which always surprised me.

Why does it surprise you but in the same thread you say he isn’t coaching material?

Genuine question

I think when he retired i just kind of presumed he would pretty much go into coaching after a short break. I thought with his knowledge of the game it would have been a no brainer for him to coach in some capacity with us, which is why i'm a bit surprised he didnt.

I dont think he is coaching material purely based on a few of the blokes i know who have been around him. He knows about the game obviously, but whenever he has got approached he was kind of a bit distant and didnt seem to want to get involved too much. Could have been his role as a director i guess getting in the way, but compared to somebody like Joey he doesnt seem to want to help develop some of these players.

Can you imagine joey’s coaching routine though? A few passing drills then off to the pub for some cocaine and a dozen beers.

I dont really like the bloke, but i've heard nothing but good things about his coaching. Gives his time to anyone who wants it.
