NFL 2019 Discussion

Might see a lot of Taysom Hill next week. I think we'll also need a good deal of luck, but hopefully it's a tight, good game.

Although I'll also accept a blowout in the Saints' favour!

I love Taysom Hill. Such a rare talent.

Some great stories today. Punter to the kicker for the TD in the Miami game. Devante Parker looking like the Devante Parker they promised five years ago.

9ers/Ravens was an amazing game. Sorry it didn't go your way, Andy and Port. But Lamar Jackson, holy shit, the guy is amazing.

Imagine being the 9ers or Ravens punter. Don't really have to do anything. I've never seen so many 4th down offensive plays.

Honestly it's a little surprising. He's had success in the past, he'll have success again in the future no doubt. They've had a couple of injury-affected seasons and performed pretty much accordingly. But new ownership has come in and seems intent on rebuilding with more of a modern, analytics focus. They'll hire some Sean McVay clone.

There are worse coaches out there that still have jobs. Like Jason Garrett.

Man how crazy was that finish? Finally the 9ers are on the right end of a last second field goal.

How beast is George Kittle???

What a game. When Smith scored and they missed the two, I felt they'd left too much time. And then they hold them to a fourth and 2, and... goddamn Kittle.

I felt the turning point was the two third down penalties that extended the Niners' last touchdown drive. That always seems to happen to the Saints at the most inopportune times. Not saying they were bad calls, although the UR flag was unlucky -- not much CGJ could do to avoid it. Forcing a punt or field goal there would have made a huge difference to the outcome, I think. That, and the offensive PI call on Thomas that pushed them out of field goal range and led to the failed fake punt. Oh, and only turning the pick into three points and not seven. A lot of missed opportunities that might have made the game not so tight at the end.

Losing Cook early hurt as well, given the impact he's been having lately, and was already having on this game before he went out. He might have been the difference in some of the third down misses later in the game. Having Klein and Alonso out didn't help either, particularly in covering short throws over the middle, particularly to Kittle.

Also, as much as I love Taysom Hill, some of his third and short snaps are just so badly telegraphed it's painful to watch. Another one today in a fairly important spot. They've got to mix some play action throws in there and occasionally hand the ball off to create at least some doubt about whether or not he's going to keep it. I know he broke off the big TD run last week, but it sure feels like he's getting pulled down for a loss just as often. A smart team will spy him every time he's in on those type of downs.

I still think Seattle will win the West, so we might see a rematch in the Dome come January, and honestly I won't feel too great about that. But it sure would make for another great game.

Agree with many of your points, especially the loss of Cook, he was immense for you guys.

Have you seen any update on Sherm? I'm more worried about him being out. I just don't trust our secondary without him...

No update as yet.
I'd like to see him sit one or two games out to refresh for the playoffs.
Like you say he is a leader.

Looks like he's out for a bit mate.

Grade 2 hamstring strains are partial muscle tears — impt to let those heal to avoid complete Grade 3 tear… complete recovery can take 4+ weeks. So, 49ers’ likely formula:

- Earn first-round bye
- Let Sherman/Ford rest
- Attack playoffs at home with healthy, rested defense

I didn't realise when I posted yesterday that Green Bay had leapfrogged the Saints into the second seed. Ugh. Green Bay haven't looked terribly convincing lately, so there is still a chance that we can get the first round bye, but at the moment it looks like worst case scenario is third seed hosting the sixth seed at the Dome in the Wildcard Round, which right now would be the Vikings. That'd be a fun game given recent history!

Jeez. Hopefully a couple of weeks rest sorts him out, would rather rest him for an extra week if he's 50/50. Even if that means sitting for the Seahags.

Can't take a trick this year with injuries.
