Nine and Fox Sports to retain NRL rights

Hopefully the next on the agenda is food prices at games.

You almost need a bank loan to afford the food.

Just to name a few.

Large Chip $5.20
Water 600 ml $4.20
Sandwich - $6.50

This deal will help shore up the struggling clubs, improve players' salaries and help us raid RU and Superleague players. It will hopefully give the Commission more funds for grassroots footy and the international scene.

I subscribe to Fox so the lack of FTA live games doesn't worry me too much.

Also one thing that the Commission achieved here is to force Fox and 9 to give up the first/last rights powers for the next deal. This is a good development.

Someone posted on LU that you could think of the disappointing aspects of this deal as the price the code has to pay for its independence.

Overall I think this is a great day for our code and we'll be able to march on with deep pockets a-jinglin'.

Eat before you go to the game.

Crisis averted.

I can't, I get nervous before games.

I never used to eat on game days, until the game was over. (was a killer having Friday night games.

I changed my thinking & I bit into a sandwich, just as Prince broke his leg, when playing for us. :scared:

The first and last rights clause means that the NRL are obliged to show the current rights holder (Nine) the full details of any bid from a competitor (Seven/Ten) and the bid must be for all the content on the current contract. Nine only have to match the bid, not beat it, to retain the rights.
It is definitely in the NRL’s favour to have the first and last rights clause negated as it will allow competitive tension. For example, Seven can bid directly for State of Origin and Nine will have no idea how much the bid is for. The higher Nine then bids, the more they maximise their chances of retaining this content.

From a Roar article.

I think this is a really important point that's been overlooked. It was a bit of a noose around the neck of the commission and is a definite advantage for the incumbents. But all in all I think it's a good outcome. They've gotten to the magical $1 billion (and with a bit more to come) and in future negotiations all of the networks can submit an improved offer without having to worry about being outbid at the death.

It's not a perfect deal but it's still pretty bloody good overall.

Yeh at first I wasn't happy with the deal but the fact is Rome wasn't built in a day, and we were never going to fix every problem with this one deal considering the price tag. The important thing now is going into the future and now it appears we have more flexibility to resolve issues such as Origin scheduling.

Having said that, night time GF is shit.

I think the removal of that clause also means that origin matches can be unbundled from the regular season games and sold separately. Origin get bigger every year - can you imagine how big it will be in five years time? Money in the bank man...

We should be selling the Origin games on their own IMO. Big money in those. The independent commission should have stipulated that all games must be shown live IMO. Two Friday night games is crap because it means the Broncos will be on Friday night 90% of the time and all the jerks will whinge about it. A deal like the AFL have would have been ideal. They get 4 live games each week on FTA tv. Heck I would have been happy with all 3 QLD teams games being shown live on FTA each week into QLD.

I agree with everything you said Beads, but given the fact they had to get rid of the noose around their neck first, those demands weren't quite realistic, which means to me that the deal isn't that bad. It's certainly a big step in the right direction!

Listening to Gyngell in the press conference there was no way they were going to show both Friday night games and the Sunday afternoon game live. Makes no sense from a commercial perspective which I can understand.

I quite like the idea of starting sunday afternoon games at 4pm anyway. It was perfect for Lockyer's regular season farewell last year and 9 could still show the football game before the 6pm news.

The only step in the right direction of the current deal is that channel 9 don't get first and last offers in 5 years time. Sure they money is great but as a fan who will only have FTA tv and no foxtel it is in no way an improvement.

Yeah, that is what I meant with the noose around their neck...
In all fairness, the fumble ball deal only includes one more FTA game, although they are all broadcasted live.

im eagerly awaiting foxtels announcements on its digital plans. if theres a 'season pass' type thing like someone mentioned like the NFL/NBA have, with an app on ipads/xbox/etc, ill be down for that.

if not, hopefully the Xbox Foxtel allows you to get the live matches for less than it costs to get the live AFL on it - something like $20 starter pack + $10 sports pack + $20 live match pack. may as well just get regular foxtel + sports, and im not doing that.

Live is the keyword though isn't it. In this day and age delayed sport is a pathetic joke and really only amateur sports should be agreeing to it.

Like I said before, you're preaching to the choir...

I'd like to see both Friday night games broadcasted live, the main game for the state on Nine, the other on their Digital channel. I'd really love for them to be broadcasted in HD too, but I guess that will have to wait...
