Eat before you go to the game.
Crisis averted.
The first and last rights clause means that the NRL are obliged to show the current rights holder (Nine) the full details of any bid from a competitor (Seven/Ten) and the bid must be for all the content on the current contract. Nine only have to match the bid, not beat it, to retain the rights.
It is definitely in the NRL’s favour to have the first and last rights clause negated as it will allow competitive tension. For example, Seven can bid directly for State of Origin and Nine will have no idea how much the bid is for. The higher Nine then bids, the more they maximise their chances of retaining this content.
This deal will help shore up the struggling clubs, improve players' salaries and help us raid RU and Superleague players. It will hopefully give the Commission more funds for grassroots footy and the international scene.
I subscribe to Fox so the lack of FTA live games doesn't worry me too much.
Also one thing that the Commission achieved here is to force Fox and 9 to give up the first/last rights powers for the next deal. This is a good development.
Someone posted on LU that you could think of the disappointing aspects of this deal as the price the code has to pay for its independence.
Overall I think this is a great day for our code and we'll be able to march on with deep pockets a-jinglin'.
I agree with everything you said Beads, but given the fact they had to get rid of the noose around their neck first, those demands weren't quite realistic, which means to me that the deal isn't that bad. It's certainly a big step in the right direction! We should be selling the Origin games on their own IMO. Big money in those. The independent commission should have stipulated that all games must be shown live IMO. Two Friday night games is crap because it means the Broncos will be on Friday night 90% of the time and all the jerks will whinge about it. A deal like the AFL have would have been ideal. They get 4 live games each week on FTA tv. Heck I would have been happy with all 3 QLD teams games being shown live on FTA each week into QLD.

Yeah, that is what I meant with the noose around their neck...The only step in the right direction of the current deal is that channel 9 don't get first and last offers in 5 years time. Sure they money is great but as a fan who will only have FTA tv and no foxtel it is in no way an improvement.
Yeah, that is what I meant with the noose around their neck...
In all fairness, the fumble ball deal only includes one more FTA game, although they are all broadcasted live.
Like I said before, you're preaching to the choir...Live is the keyword though isn't it. In this day and age delayed sport is a pathetic joke and really only amateur sports should be agreeing to it.
