Nine and Fox Sports to retain NRL rights

Salary cap will be $5 million apparently

Fingers crossed that all of our home games are scheduled on a Friday night. .

And from a totally selfish point of view, yes I'm being serious.

At least I'll get to watch them live on tv.

As a season member its getting a bit old going to games every Friday night, kind of like doing the same workout all the time, you need to change it up.

I like Friday night games, so long as I'm not actually working a late shift on that day.

Yeah that's the point. I like Friday night games.......I like Sunday arvo games too.

We shouldn't be pigeon holed into one format because some self righteous ch9 knob jockey thinks he's paid us enough to cop it sweet and to stfu.

"- The grand final and State of Origin will not be broadcast in HD next year but will from 2014 onwards."

It's about bloody time! But why only state of origin and the grand final? Why not every semi and every Friday/Sunday games?

I don't understand why they can't broadcast every single game in HD.

Didn't they do broadcast the 2010 series in 3D and HD? How come they can't at least do that for all semis/origins for next year... Bloody channel 9.

Or at least show them upscaled like they did before 9HD became Gem.

The Channel 7/10 bid included 4 live FTA games on Channel 10 every week! :(

From my understanding 7 & 10 were the highest bidders, but 9 had the right of reply.

Also

Stiff shit if you hate having all Friday night games.

Nine calls tune as David Gyngell tells Broncos 'You play when we say'

BRISBANE Broncos will have Friday night fever for the next five years, with Channel 9 boss David Gyngell adamant his "huge cheque" for the $1.025 billion TV rights buys him the schedule of choice.
Gyngell was unapologetic over his demands, adding he would like the Broncos to play every single Friday night because it sold best in Queensland.

"Why wouldn't they be on every Friday night in Brisbane?" Gyngell said. "We just bought the game.

"I don't care (if the Broncos don't want it), they're going to do quite well out of the money they're going to get from the deal, aren't they?

What an arrogant prick. I hate night games, as I'm sure a lot of people do - especially those with families. It's a totally different environment to a Sunday afternoon game, and it's not one I enjoy, so that limits my attendance at games to the one Sunday game we got this year, and the two I believe we got last year (and the second only because of Locky's farewell).

The money's a bonus, I guess, and the set schedule for twenty games. Would have loved to see someone take it away from Nine, though. Maybe in five years time...

Thinking about my own personal situation, with new baby due end of February, the last thing my family needs is me to go out every 2nd Friday to watch football when it's live on TV anyway.

Can't see myself renewing my membership.

I was about to say that given what channel 9 have said about Broncos playing every Friday night I reckon it is a blow for the broncos membership aspirations.

that is honestly one of the most unprofessional things ive ever seen/heard someone say.

channel 9 bought the broadcast rights, not the actual game. they shouldnt get to say the broncos have to play every home game on a friday night because they want to show it on 9 on friday night.

absolutely disgraceful.

The NRL really needs to pull its finger out. The more I think about it the more pissed I become. Channel 9 is a disease that's corrupting our game. I don't think I can take 5 more years of their disregard for the fans. Gyngell can go eat a dick

The fans will never be happy. For every upside, there is a downside, and vice-versa.

The game needs to generate revenue in order to compete with other codes and retain it's players. The main way they can generate revenue is by selling the broadcasing rights. Now either a pay TV network broadcasts the games, which means the fans have to pay to watch the games, or a FTA network broadcasts the game, which means they have to recoup the money via advertising.

If they are going to broadcast the game on FTA, then they need to maximize the advertising dollars they can get by broadcasting the games in the best manner for this (eg, best games in prime time, most probably delayed). Unfortunately if the NRL want the maximum deal possible, they have to bow to this pressure. It's like anything in life, the more people pay for something, the more they expect, and quite rightly imo.

So for those whinging about the new deal, would you rather better FTA coverage (i.e more games, and more live games), less money for the deal, no increase is salary cap and see players like Hunt, Folau etc lost to other codes or overseas? Then instead of whinging threads like this there would be whinging threads about how the game needs to do more to keep it's players. Or would you rather all the games to be shown on pay tv, and have to subscribe to it to even see any games?
