NRL bans shoulder charges

Was never arguing effectiveness, either option is going to end up the same way - try.

I beg to disagree. In this example, a good shoulder charge is a good chance to save a try, while a "normal" tackle attempt by a small guy like Slater on most NRL players, will result in a try.

I find it quite frustrating that the focus is on the shoulder charge rather than dealing with concussion, because those will happen regardless of which rules get implemented.

I've yet to see an example where a shoulder charge would have been effective.

Tackling close and wrapping up the ball is the way to go.

Plenty of reasons to moan about the shoulder charge ban, the ability to prevent tries isn't one of them.

yeh, tackling close and wrapping up the ball is gonna work when coming in from the side on a guy whos about to dive over the tryline while footing the touchline......

shoulder charge is the better option. slater on tahu in origin that was posted in this very thread is the perfect example.

That's when you launch yourself and tackle them over the sideline obviously. Attempting to lead with just your shoulder would be stupid and 98.7% of the time is going to end up as a try.

The Game 2 04 example was bad for the reasons I gave earlier. By going for the shoulder charge, he gave Tahu a second dip at the line, if he tackles him front on then Tahu doesn't even get that shot. Thankfully Tahu is Tahu otherwise who knows if the Maroons would have even won that game.

Tell me, how do you tackle someone head on when you're running at their side? No fullback goes for a front on shoulder charge while defending their line lol. Well no fullback worth mentioning **cough**cough**moi moi steamrolled**. Side on is a whole different story, and a shoulder charge is the most effective tackle for that circumstance.

If Slater goes for a legitimate tackle on Tahu, which he had ample opportunity of doing, he's got him over the sideline easy. However, by going for the lazy option he's given Tahu another bite of the cherry and has forced himself to go and strip the ball.

So you are saying Slater should have gotten his body in front of him even though he was coming in from the side? All slaters momentum is going towards the sideline, flying in with a shoulder is going to cause slater to keep al his momentum going towards the sideline and hopefully knock Tahu out of bounds. A wrap up tackle is going to lose some of that momentum.

Frankly, either way the fullback is on a hiding to nothing in that situation. The way wingers these days finish makes it near impossible to effectively make a stop I reckon.

Nope, I'm saying if Slater attempts to make a tackle, grab and drive him over the sideline which he had the opportunity of doing it's all over 2m before the try line.

What's important here is not only do I believe a tackle is the most effective option but I don't believe the shoulder charge is the only option.

shoulder charge is nearly ALWAYS the better option when trying to force someone over the sideline 1-on-1 when coming from side on with the player just about to dive over the try line. i dont even know how anyone can debate that lol.

See how it works? Just going to have to agree to disagree.

100% agree with AP. if it were mathematically possible, I'd agree 9377727177%

Awesome try saver from Billy.

Think Slater injured himself attempting that too.

and look how close he got him to being out! hit him 2-3 metres away from sideline, and it took a fantastic put down to still score the try. if he tries to make a regular tackle the guy just gets an easy put down 2-3 metres further in field.

You have to decelerate to make a tackle. If someone is 2-3 metres away from scoring you want as much of your momentum going to the sideline as possible. Debate that.
