NRL Player Movements and Rumours 2015

apparently the cowboys have scored Ben Teo ..someone (or two)in that loaded squad must surely be on the way out

Tamoa would be the likely one but them they'll be an experienced prop short.

Te'o would likely play in the middle anyway. That's where he was most effective for Souffs.

Speaking of that, how much are they missing him right now? And Burgess even more so.

Te'o is really versatile, but if it was up to me, he'd be on the right over Ethan Lowe. Lowe's proven to be a handy acquisition, playing way above his pay-scale but he isn't an elite player and I don't think he ever will be.

Te'o is a great fringe runner and has a preference to play right. If the Cows go that way, it just makes sense.

Bench will be a concern for them, depending on the future of Tamou. I assume he's off to Canberra still?

I haven't seen a single article saying Te'o is close to signing with the Cowboys or whatever, so not sure where that rumour has come from.

Yeah I'm confused too. Last I heard the Titans couldn't sign him because he couldn't get a release for next season

I did say 'apparently' ... Just heard it from a couple of unofficial sources.. Will ask my boss on Monday (was the Cowboys media manager for the last few yrs until this yr - still basically has one foot in the job)

Ha! Also some talk that Jarryd Hayne will join the Roosters next year if he doesn't crack the NFL.. lol, Sydney Roosters and their Hans Christian salary cap.. I'm sure they've got a mill and a half up their sleeve for a rainy day

But they lost SBW. That gives them room to re-sign everyone on bigger contracts, sign Hayne and Te'o and also sign SBW, doesn't it?

Who'd they lose to sign SBW in the first place? Tautau Moga and Daniel Mortimer?

Although I guess you could argue they just have a pile of money saved from having a shithouse halfback. Kinda like the Sharks, save on the halfback and splurge on forwards (and drugs).

Let's look into this...

Now, it wouldn't surprise me if the Roosters went into 2012 a marquee player short.

In 2011/12 they lost...

Todd Carney
Nate Myles
Jason Ryles
Kane Linnett
Phil Graham
Daniel Conn
Anthony Watts

And only signed

Daniel Mortimer
Jack Bosden
Peni Tagive
Nafe Seluini

So they gave up 3 marquee players and only signed a bunch of fringe graders. It wasn't like the talent they kept were in for substantial pay-days

Then they signed

Sonny-Bill Williams
James Maloney
Michael Jennings
Luke O'Donnell
Michael Oldfield
Sam Moa

And gave up...

Justin Carney
Mose Masoe
BJ Leilua
Anthony Mitchell
Sam Perrett
Peni Tagive
Brad Takairangi

It's still tough without knowing the ins and outs of everything, but on the surface, it isn't as suss as people make out.

But what about the upgrades their 17 international players should have got?

There wouldn't have been that many substantial upgrades from 2012 or 2013.

Just seems weird to have a cap where you lose a star and can re-sign a star. No other club can do that.

Well the Roosters would have some cash around with RTS and Maloney leaving so that makes some kind of sense.

I can sort of buy them being under the cap now, though they'd be pushing it more than any other elite side. There's no way in hell they should be able to afford Hayne. Or SBW again.

You'd have to think a lot of those re-signings would be massive upgrades. Especially as we were led to believe that Tupou was on <cough cough> minimum wage. Guerra's now an Origin player. Napa's an Origin 18th man. Taukehihouoio is now an established first-grader. And Ferguson was supposedly on the cheap. Losing Maloney will save some money, but not so RTS. Just because he's being signed for a million dollars doesn't mean that's what he was on at the Roosters. I wouldn't be surprised if he was under $200k as he was always Mini's understudy and hadn't yet convinced everyone he was the goods, as evidenced by Mini still getting the fullback gig throughout his last year, when he was supposed to be on the wing to let RTS ease in to the #1.
