NRL Player Movements & Rumours

I get the feeling that the Dolphins will land Munster however he wont play there until 2024 so there a good chance we dont get a decision until later in the year.
I just cant see Munster taking a massive haircut to stay at Melbourne and with his off field incidents he seems to be less prioritised then Grant & Hughes.
It all changes though if they land Ponga for 2023.

Redcliffe need a player next year, I don't think a player coming in '25 or '24 is much value to them. You need people on board from round one, not stick with us in two years Munster will be here.

Not saying you don't sign Munster or Hughes but my focus would be '23 as far as big name signings.

They could definitely go:

2023 - $1.5 million at Ponga
2024 - $1.2 million at Munster

If you are Melbourne, as good as Munster is on his day, livewire 6s are FAR easier to find / manufacture than a game managing 7 or world class 9 as there are like 4 of each in the whole world (Cook, Korisau, Grant, Mahoney, Cleary, Reynolds, Hughes, Keary).

How's the nerve of the storm to expect one of the best players in the world to take pay cut?

Is it really bargaining power if you can't leave until end of '24 or sign somewhere else until '25?

Storm know they have him and Dolphins can't get him until '25. There is no quick about it really. It's an empty threat. Hughes really has no power at all- no hand.

Because no one has ever agitated for a release before their NRL contract is up.

So Hughes' nefarious master plan was to re-sign until the end of 24 wait 12 months and play badly to get out and go sign with the Dolphins while asking for an extension from the Storm.

Either genius or madness. Hehe

Agree however, they’re running out of *marquee* signing options.
Really the only massive name getable for next year is Ponga.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they land Walsh but to me he isn’t a marquee player.
I think Wayne played the wait and see game but they’re running out of big names for 2023.

I don't see why they need to get a "marquee" anyway. If they get one, cool, but otherwise I'm sure Bennet will make any team competitive (and end up creating some of their own superstars).

Wayne won't panic if they don't get one in 2023 but in 2024 I think there would be the expectation they get one.

or it could go the way of the knights

The difference here is that Bennett is getting the opportunity to start from scratch. When he went to Newcastle he was inheriting a lot of talent that he was slowly trying to phase out. There was also this expectation that they'd be competing for premierships which he really only came close to achieving in 2013 and even then their regular season was fairly unconvincing.

I think Bennett cops too much of the blame for the Rick Stone and Nathan Brown years. Bennett failed Newcastle, but not to the extent those coaches would have you believe.

yeah was more talking about the idea that he will be able to do well with no talent in the spine i dont think he will be able to do well with average players in the 1,6,7 or 9,he had a bog average newcastle side and no amount of coaching he was doing was getting them anywhere.
love to be proved wrong but need some experience there imo.

I actually thought he had the marquee talent to be successful, it just never quite worked out. Darius was one of the better players in the competition before he went over and his performances became erratic. Kurt Gidley could barely make it onto the field, but at the very least he seemed like an upgrade on Ben Hornby who he just coached as a premiership winning #7. Jarrod Mullen was one of the most skillful halves in the competition, he just needed more guidance and Danny Buderus was one of those players that was run out of the competition by Brian Smith. Bennett still saw value in him and Buderus almost took the NSW jersey until injuries on the eve of Game I put that to bed.

However I agree that it's silly to say he doesn't need marquee talent. Bennett more than any other coach knows how important it is to have inspirational players in your squad. Langer, Locky, Soward, Munster etc. Even getting players like Roberts, Pangai Jr, Oates, Fifita, Staggs, Milford etc. fired up somehow turned a season like 2018 into a finals appearance. Those players weren't necessarily team players, but if they could make a big play it would usually go a long way to winning a match. Moreso than Bennett teaching them structures or set-plays.

From memory he joined the Roosters as a depth half but decided to give it away. I'm not sure if it was before or after, but he did a pre-season with Parramatta before he decided to call time on his career and just play in the local competition.

I thought Lamb was a good prospect, it's difficult to tell whether he had the fortitude for NRL football or if he was just ill-equipped by being tossed into the deep end at a struggling club at a young age. Maybe a bit of both?

According to Fox, Munster is on 1.2m next year and Melbourne are offering him 800k moving forward.

Dolphins will be offering 1m. Interesting to see if be knocks back 600k+ more sponsorship opportunities for the love of Melbourne
