NRL Player Movements & Rumours

It's a bizarre move, especially since Cherry-Evans is playing as well as he ever has and still looks to have another year or two left in him. You could understand it if Daly was pulling the pin and you were desperate, but you'd think Seibold would have learned his lesson from Croft. I don't think there's a player who is more like Brodie than Brooks.

The kicker is trading Latu Fainu for Tommy Talau. Latu is one of the best players coming through and somebody you could build the club around DCE. If you were a fan you'd be having some tremendous doubts over the future of the club.

Then on top of that you have the Jaxson Paulo signing. Things didn't work out for him at the Rabbitohs or the Roosters, why would you be in a rush to sign him to an NRL deal at the Sea Eagles?

Titans just resigned Verrills, Jolliffe and Randall until 2026. Especially happy with the Verrills resigning but the other two are also very solid bench players. Randall has been particularly impressive this year.

the boys from Bloke in a Bar have talked about an Idea from Joel Caine ... and it is a fucking good idea, that is too smart for the NRL to implement.

I'll let them explain it

Brooks doesn’t happen to have the same manager as Seibold by any chance?

Seems so obvious it hurts

A good attempt at fixing the situation from Caine, but an easier and simpler solution is just to ban mid season moves.
I have a mate who is an AFL devotee, but he comes over to watch the Broncos and he's really getting to love our great game, but when I told him that players can switch clubs mid season he wet himself laughing. Literally could not believe it was allowed.

The AFL has a midseason draft currently and have been talking for some time about including a trade window in there as well. So while they don’t currently do it, it shouldn’t sound that absurd to your friend.

Those AFL fans are a bit simple.

Nearly every other major sport world wide has mid season transfers.

I think some form of pro rata needs to be applied to the cap.

At the moment I believe clubs are effectively given a bucket of money and they have until Nov 1 to spend 95%... but their top 30 needs to be finalised by Aug 1 (previously June 30). Each month the salaries accumulate in the bucket of money.

This could mean that a club could operate their first half of the year or so with 20-25 players, being able to spend up big on star players each year and filling their bucket, but having enough money leftover for the second half to fill it with depth and dregs... a team could theoretically operate above the salary cap under that approach when player value is considered.

One issue under a pro rata approach could be teams not being able to spend all of their cap.... or rather teams being unable to spend all of their grant from the NRL and pocketing whatever is leftover.

Under a pro rata you're only able to spend 100% of your cap if your top 30 is finalised by Nov 1... because from then on that money is being lost... and there wont be a team in the comp that achieves that.

This only becomes an issue because a club wont be able to spend the mandatory 95% of the salary cap, and you could see "poorer" clubs tanking on the cap to pocket that leftover money from the grant.

An aspect they absolutely have to do is bringing forward the deadline on when your top 30 roster has to be finalised.

They could also introduce limits on when a top 20 or top 25 have to be finalised to ensure clubs are having to spend the majority of their cap over the year.

Basically just put in a trade deadline ... halfway through the year is about Rd 10... there's not many teams each year that will be looking to blow up their season that early, where a Bhunt ends up on the market by the trade deadline.

Have a trade window straight after the GF through to Dec 1 (or until Rd 1) to finalise a top 25 or so, and then all movements between clubs finishes at Rd 10.

Anyone without a club becomes a free agent and can be picked up at any time by any club, but anyone under contract is there until the window opens again after the GF.

Now I’ve heard the rumour Hunt to cows for Holmes. Seems strange. Why would cowboys want Hunt and Chad?

Why would the cows give up Holmes? He's been one of their best all year. They don't need a halfback or a hooker (Robson is one of the rare 9s in the game who can consistently play 80 mins). Them signing Hunt at the cost of Val arguably weakens their side.

It also flies in the face of the getting back to QLD. Yes North Queensland is in QLD but he is clearly talking about SE Qld in terms of getting back to family. If he went to The Cowboys he would be further away from them than he is now in Sydney.

Apparently Val wants to go somewhere and play 1.
Seems a ludicrous play for the cowboys imo.

Just can't see it tbh. Wasn't he the 1 at Cronulla there for a while and got shuffled back to the Wing/Centre?

Also Hunt going to the Cows is just all kinds of wrong on a number of levels.
