The myth goes around that the game used to be played by proper 'hard men' who were tougher than the modern players, but when you see footage like that or Les Boyd on Darryl Brohman it really does remind you that in a lot of instances the players were just out and out thugs who wouldn't last 5 minutes in the modern game if they relied on tactics like that
