A suspension has to be forthcoming.

I'd be incredibly surprised if it doesn't. Only way I can see it not happening is if the video footage totally vindicated them. Highly unlikely...

Abusing refs is a pretty big deal, abusing junior refs is an even bigger deal. We struggle for refs as it is, if the junior refs in our game are feeling intimated that's an awful way to attract new talent. IMO the NRL should make a big stance on this and ban then for at least 6 competition months (no backdating or count holidays as suspension rubbish), if not a year or two.

He must have been pretty angry to scare a riot cop into needing an escort to his car. Hope the Sharks sack him.

Have some fucking class you idiots. Or just keep pissing in the well that keeps morons like you off the dole or in jail.

This is one area where I am happy for people to throw around the term "role model" in the context of how players interact with referees. See: Cameron Smith's approach, versus Michael Ennis or Josh Reynolds.

Their behaviour filters down to the lower levels of the game and is taken as acceptable. From the TV to the park.

If the NRL is happy to make mandatory "one punch" rules, it should make mandatory dissent rules. Forget the "we're two men talking here" bullshit, there needs to be some rapid response and better tools for the referees (like 5 minute sin bins)... AND start actually using them.

There's a line between respectful query and aggressive disent. All players know that line and some choose to flaunt it.

You can be tough or aggressive and play strong footy or be competitve without being a fucking knob to the bloke that facilitates your game and gets paid about $40 per game for the privilege.

They have both copped a 12 month ban from attending Penrith junior rugby league games.

Cronulla will be using the he has had depression excuse.

Andrew Fifita has struggled with depression, a fact Cronulla will digest when discussing any possible punishment.

“There’s a lot of things that will go into it — the player’s welfare, his health. We all know where Andrew has been before,” Flanagan said.

“We’re not making excuses here, as the club will deal with it really strongly. As I said the right people are in control of that. I’ll coach the footy team.”

Also David did a similar thing in 2011.

David Fifita served year-long ban for abusing officials in 2011

Reading the article, these fuckwits have form abusing officials, going back several years.

So, on a sliding scale, abusing a ref and some of you are calling for a year ban from the NRL. Fair enough, that's what you think is fair. So , assaulting a woman should be what, five years first offence ? Banned for life ? Give it a rest. Fortunately I know what's going to happen and it will be dealt with by wise and mature grown ups who don't knee jerk every event. Probably a few games suspension and a heavy fine. That's of course if it is proven. Idiots like Harrigan get asked their opinion and people with selective memories think he was a great ref. When he was a ref and bowed to media pressure. Total knob .

In this case, I think they should get a year ban.

The ref was a volunteer, giving up his time for the kids etc, then some turds, cough cough NRL 'stars' abuse & threaten to smash him.

Andrew Fifita was also illegally on the field. (why was he at the game anyway, was it to support his halfwit twin David)

Your argument here is really poor, you're comparing abuse of an official to assault of a woman. Here's the big difference, the official is directly involved in the game they're playing, and the punishment is to ban them from playing in a game for abusing its officials, not to put them in jail. That's very different to a domestic violence incident in private, or even just physical assault outside of rugby league, where the public judicial system will deal with him. If he/they actually physically assaulted a woman at a game, especially one they were involved in, absolutely 5 years, even a life ban.

They verbally assaulted and intimated an official who makes the game they're playing possible, if they can't respect the officials in a competition they're contracted to be part of, including them being representatives of their clubs (it's a rugby league game, they're rugby league players), then they don't deserve the privilege of being part of the game.

It's as simple as that.

And since you're certain of the outcome, please be my guest and tell me what you believe it to be, so we can come back to it once the decision has been made. Also, those wise and mature grown ups who don't knee jerk, handed David Fifita a year ban for a similar incident, so it seems the grown ups agree with those calling for the longer bans, at least on precedent.

Is there a Sharks forum you can go back to now that they're winning a few games, mate? Just kidding. Kinda. And yes, those who assault women should be banned for life. And those who abuse junior referees should also cop large bans and have to put in a lot more effort with the community. In fact, the Fifita brothers should have to be touch judges in Penrith for a year.

No, I'm definitely not comparing anything. What I am doing is pointing out scale. That's why I wrote 'sliding scale' !!!!!I knew that post would stir up the hotheads.

You see, to me punishments should be proportionate to the crime. I would consider banning a player for a year to be a very serious punishment and then sliding upwards, 2/3/4 /5 years or life. So, if we are punishing people the most severe punishment should be reserved for the most serious crime. Yelling at a match official is not anywhere near the most serious . Assault, robbery, firearms, arson, high level drug dealing( no, not a pound of pot ), match fixing , etc are just some of the serious crimes that should result in year long suspensions and more.
