COREY Oates is on a selection collision course with Wayne Bennett after telling the Broncos super coach his days as a winger are over.
Oates’ bid to make a risky conversion from the backs to the forwards suffered a blow on Wednesday when the hulking winger failed to finish a pre-season training session at Purtell Park.
On the comeback trail from off-season groin surgery, Oates felt a twinge as he attempted to change direction during a skills session. He was heard telling Broncos physios “I’m in a bit of pain” before limping out of Purtell Park with an ice pack strapped to his right groin.
Oates has had a wretched year with injury and illness – spending time in hospital in July with a staph infection – but insists he isn’t hitting the panic button over his latest groin concern.

“I tried to do a bit of skills but it didn’t go too great,” Oates said.
“I’ve been doing straight-line running for the past three weeks. I tried to do a bit more but the change of direction stuff pushed me a bit more.
“I felt a bit of a pull so I decided to stop after that. It’s not serious, there was a bit of pain there but I’ll ice it up and take it easy for the next few days.”
There could be more pain on the horizon for Oates, who faces a philosophical clash with Bennett over where he is best suited at the Broncos.
Graded as a back-rower, Oates was initially blooded in first grade on the wing to help his injury-ravaged body cope with the rigours of NRL football.

But after 97 games and four full seasons on the flanks, including four Origin games in the Queensland No. 2 jumper, Oates has had enough.
He has told Bennett he wants to play in the forwards in 2018.
There is just one problem – Bennett is not convinced Oates, who has had 10 operations at age 23, can handle the punishment an NRL back-rower must absorb.
“I’ve spoken to Wayne about playing in the forwards next year. I’m done as a winger,” Oates said.
“I’ve told Wayne that I have made my mind up and that I want to play in the back row.
“Wayne probably wants to keep me on the wing but he says he will give me a chance. It’s up to me to change his mind.
“It’s not that I hate playing on the wing, but I honestly don’t believe it’s my position.
“I’ve had more problems on the wing with injuries than I had in the (forwards) ... so why not move back?”

Oates said Broncos medicos have assured him his groin rehabilitation is on track.
“I had my tendon cut as part of the operation, so I’m probably compensating in other areas,” he said.
“I need to strengthen my groin. There’s some scar tissue there and the physios said it would be part of getting back to 100 per cent.
“It (groin) is a delicate area to get surgery on. It’s not a massive injury ... it’s more a pain in the butt to get right.”

I get a feeling it's either that or he'll leave. I do wonder how he's going to negotation his salary for 2019 onwards when he's completely unproven in that position outside of U20s.

he will get some big offers elsewhere to play back row.
his manager only did a 1 year extension for this specific reason.
be interesting to see how it unfolds

He's played ISC there on the left hand side.

Do you know how much money he's on??

If he can handle the punishment he can go into the forwards but its not an ideal year to be doing this with our second row stacked and us needing a finishing winger which oates is.

Oates could be anything as a back rower

His body though....

I understand his reasons, but this seems selfish. The TEAM needs him on the wing atm, he is young and there will be some spots opening up in the second row over the next few years. Be patient, Corey.

I thought Oates' new 1 year contract was worth more than the $200 - $300k range. I had in my head about $400k - $450k, but that might have been a discussion here where we were hypothesising.

Oates running lines off Milford would be amazing, Yet the thought of him defending next to milf makes me shudder.

Although I disagree with him going against the coach through the media he has some good points plus he cannot continue his rep career on the wing selectors have made that obvious so for his career potential it has to happen

Impact player off the bench, few good runs in the middle plus a few runs at halves he could be very dangerous and can cover injuries in the backline

Oates doesn't appear mentally mature/hardened enough to be in back row yet. Add to that niggles of health and recovering injuries its just not his time in the back row yet. IMO he looked healthiest and strongest in 2015/ early 2016. Then mid 2016 he looked to drop his fitness and strength (probably injuries).

His career would also be longer being on the wing - yet injecting during games as alternate forward for hitups or strong running role.

Like Harry said, it's now up to Oates to earn it. Good on him if he busts his arse and demands selection through his effort and form. But he lives & dies with it - if he doesn't want to play wing, and he's not good enough for a starting spot, he'll be getting time off the bench at best. And if his body gets beat up and he's injured more often than not, both that and the benching will likely hamper his ability to demand top dollar from any clubs but the most desperate.

Why would we force a player of Oates caliber to play in an unpreferred position? The bloke is damn close to a freak on the wing, I can't even imagine the heights he can reach in the back row. The combination of him and Gillett would be the best in the league.

Let him do what he wants. He's earned it frankly.

If Oates is willing to sacifice a starting spot for most of/all this year to transition I'm happy if the team tried to transition him.

Mead cops a bagging on here (from me included after one game in particular) but he'd be a starting winger at most teams, and a stand out in some of the worse teams. And Pearson and opacic are solid cover/depth.

The 2nd row is stacked and Oates does give more at the moment (maybe not in the future?) to the team from wing, but if he is willing to work his way in to a spot I think it may give us a different positive (impact player) to the one he provides at the moment until he develops his lateral defence 3 players in on the defensive line.

Oates would run some great lines in the second row and I would start him over Glenn and have Glenn as our utility instead of Mead.

He has played second row for Broncos, just watch the long highlights vid on YouTube. He is a destructive Runner close to the line but yeah, we ain't got enough wingers. I think Isaako is in with a shot and maybe Seve.

Why would we force a player of Oates caliber to play in an unpreferred position?

because he is fucking good on the wing and we have **** all depth in the position, while we are stacked for depth and talent in the backrow ... giving him what he wants right now will be hurting the team
