Maybe the Broncs are thinking Cameron Smith 2014-2015 then switch that money to DCE when his Manly contract is up.

Cam Smith despite the money and age would certainly give us much needed leadership, direction and big game experience on the field. We've really missed that since the great man Locky retired.

*EDIT* or then again it could be all just bullcrap and he is trying to push his dollars up a the Storm like Cooper Cronk.

That's a good thing. Hopefully he milks them for every cent.

Agreed, I don't want to pay him a million a season at his age, as truly great as he is.

Melbourne Storm star Cameron Smith increasingly likely to sign with Brisbane Broncos

EXCLUSIVE: THE Melbourne Storm are poised to lose arguably their greatest player, skipper Cameron Smith, to Brisbane.

The Herald Sun understands the Brisbane Broncos are increasingly likely to snare the Melbourne superstar, who is said to be favouring a move back to his home state for the sake of his young family.

But Storm is refusing to budge on next season – the final year of Smith’s contract – ruling out any possibility of an early release for the Queensland and Test captain.

Storm are expecting an update from Smith when he returns from a family overseas holiday in Fiji ahead of Friday night’s Storm’s Player of the Year awards.

Storm football boss Frank Ponissi was on Wednesday night adamant no decision had been made.

"We appreciate and respect the fact it is a massive decision for Cameron and his family," he said.

TIM SHEENS: VERY STRONG KANGAROOS SQUAD 2:43

Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens says Australia's World Cup squad is "very strong" despite injuries to Manly stars Anthony Watmough and the Stuart brothers.
"But absolutely no decision has been made on where he will play from 2015 onwards.

"He will tell us in due course and we dispute a decision has already been made."

The club has been in formal talks with Smith for some time.

But the two parties are no closer to reaching a deal, despite both agreeing a decision on Smith’s future must be made before the start of next season.

Both club and player want the matter settled well before round one to avoid ongoing speculation overshadowing the club’s 2014 campaign.

The Broncos – who cannot formally approach Smith until November 1 - are believed to be confident of landing the game’s best hooker with a deal to the tune of $1 million a season.

The move has the backing of former Brisbane greats Darren Lockyer and Steve Renouf, with both urging the Broncos to open the chequebook to secure him.

But the Broncos will not secure him for next season, despite speculation Melbourne may allow him to head north a year early.

Sources close to the club have told The Herald Sun that Smith has not asked for an early release, nor would it be granted under any circumstances.

Family is the major reason for Smith’s expected move.

Smith this year conceded he and wife Barbara, who have three children, miss family support networks on offer in Brisbane.

meh, if we can't get him from next year onwards I don't think it's worth the money. Better off using that money to target some younger guns (DCE, Milford)

If Smith was 25-27, it'd be a no-brainer. But not now. It'd mean a waste of nearly a decade in development for the club and Macca going elsewhere due to a 2-3 year max signing of Smith when Andrew has a possible 10 years still.

He is just so so good and although he will see out the twilight years of his career he is still a bloody awesome player.

You don't say no to a player like Cam Smith.

Type of player who draws players to the club.

Please let's not go there. If Smith wants to be back home then he should do it for less than a million a season. I think he's worth about 350/400 thousand a year for three years at this stage. The money would be better spent on an up and coming player and certainly not a million for any one player out there. I just cannot see him attracting other players to the club. He is still a brilliant player but it looks like a ploy to drive up the offer from Melbourne . Let them fund his farewell.

It's still just a rumour though isn't it ?

I'm still against it as i think the future lies in the younger players, but at the same time .... Smiths experience would be so good for our young group.

If only he was 25/27 as others have already stated :ohwell:

$350/$400k is tiny in today's market for a player of his ability and standing in the game. From memory the cap will be about $6.7mil which means the average wage will be around $268k,

Who has he drawn to Melbourne that wasnt already there?

Obviously not many cos they don't need to (or would have the cap space). But he is the kind of guy that people would stay for less for cos they know they have a higher chance of success (and in the case of Melbourne, know how good he makes them look). He is also the state and national captain, people know that the combinations formed with him increase there selection chances. Hands up how many people think Justin oneill would have even been mentioned for a the 18th man gig for origin had he not played for Melbourne. Lockyer drew players to the club and smith would be no different.
