[Official] Smith re-signs with the Storm

His running game is declining but that was never his main strength. Farah has a better running game but it's smiths brain, passing and kicking he gets paid for.

If we signed him for 4yrs, I'd say he'd play 80 for the next 2-3yrs and the last would be a Buderus style 40-60.

Cam would be turning 32 if we signed him for 2015. I think offering him 1.5 million is a bit over the top though as it would take up to much cap space and could effect the management of other players, I would personally offer him something between $600 000-80 0000.

Age isn't catching up to him and he is still the best hooker in the game. He would also greatly benefit our attack as his kicking, game-reading and organisation is still first-class.

Four years for that amount of money is a massive, massive gamble. I don't like it but if it was lower as mentioned, like a third the reported price, I'd jump at it.

What
So if we don't go for Smith, do we keep Macca (who seems to be getting worse and not better)? What's your solution?

What do we do with the money given that DCE has made it clear that he doesn't want to leave Manly (and in any event, he is contracted until the end of 2015)?

Personally I thin Smith is a bargain at any price. He will improve the team by 15% on his own.

You're right...if he was even 27. He will be 32 when he comes for that money. We could target Segeyaro or Friend, even if we have to wait for them and what happens if we sign up admit and Macca finally becomes a gun this year? We've stuck with him so long and he has shown signs he can be a very, very good hooker. If this talk abot Smit finally gets him to pull his finger out, what then?

I have previously stated I think Macca is a great hooker and has all the skills to improve etc. but I'm not getting into that again. As for calls that he is getting worse I really don't think it's fair to claim players are getting worse after last year because if we are being honest there are very few players that didn't 'get worse' last year due to the fact that the average park footy player was fitter than our squad

If Hunt can't step up this year I'd rather we throw 1.2-1.3 plus the Captaincy at DCE, Save the other 200-300k, if McCullough can't step up either, add the 200-300 to what he's on and offer it to Friend.

If Hunt and Macca can set the world on fire (Hopeful but not holding my breath) in 2014, throw it all at a couple of classy outside backs.

I think Macca is overrated. I don't think he's worth persisting with. Kinda like throwing good money after bad.

He won't pull his finger out and even if he does, what's to stop him reinserting it once the Smith talk dies down?

I just think Smith adds so many intangibles to a team (including not accepting bad performances, which was the hallmark of the team last year).

DCE isn't coming before 2016 (at least and if ever), we can't bank on that happening.

Again all good points but Smith may not be slowing down yet but he WILL, he has to physically. The aging process catches up with everyone. I would love to have Smith for all the reasons you said and more BUT not on that ridiculous amount being speculated. I would rather chase DCE no matter how much of a long shot it is. With the squad we are building by 2015, who could well be enticed or we could have our very own gun half by then anyway.

I don't think we need to buy Smith at the enormous cost his status deserves. We are not the London Broncos or some English retirement home. I love him as a player and doubtless he is a good man but he can find some other sucker club to fund his retirement. We persist with Macca but have him understand he must hit the ground running or face the prospect of demotion. We can promote any one of a dozen players from within our squad and fringe/feeder clubs who could play hooker. It is NOT a difficult position to learn and another player who is even vaguely aware of how special it is to play first grade would make a good job of it.

I suspect we won't have to worry about the position because a few players have seen that an opening may be there and will be waiting eagerly to take over if and when Macca falls.

The bolded is absolutely correct. He's not coming here because he wants to make the Broncos a success again. He'll never have the same feeling towards the club as he does the Storm. He may be the most professional player in the world, but that won't be enough for him to put 110% in like he does currently. When he says that he'll do what's best for his family, all he means is squeezing the maximum dollars out of his last contract. The 4 year request just confirms it for me.

If he was 29 yes but at 31/32 when he arrives i am a little concerned

It's what he will bring to the club after his playing days are over that make it worthwhile

But that's assuming he will step into the coaching ranks

If that isn't what he wants to do, I wouldn't buy him at all

What "building" are speaking of? We are adding one player, Milford.

Who says Smith will slow down (in the important part of the game for a hooker, between the ears), Menzies (for example) didn't.

If you want DCE (and I'm not saying don't chase him, I just don't think you'll get him) then he's more likely to sign on if Smith is the hooker (rather than Macca). By the time that DCE come up, Smith's wage is likely to be irrelevant (noting that we would only chase DCE if we were getting rid of Hunt; plus Hodges will probably retire around the same point in time).

As for Macca I think we need to let him go. You shouldn't have to have understandings with fg players to ensure that they will pull their finger out.

"We persist with Macca but have him understand he must hit the ground running or face the prospect of demotion."

Why persist with a bloke that you need to threaten to have him perform?

Cut him now.

Where has it been said (outside of this forum) that he has been threatened or has to be?
