[Official] Smith re-signs with the Storm

I still can't believe people want to not buy an elite player because somebody might come along. The odds of it actually happening aren't the greatest and even if a player like you all mention does pop up, there's a good chance many people would say no don't sign him because he's a douche.

Take Friend for example, if he gets released early it's probably because he's been drink driving again. We almost signed Dugan on the cheap and look at how that was received by some.

Barba and Milford are very rare cases in that we were able to sign both (relatively) cheaply because of a need to be closer to home. Players of this level of quality rarely come available for cheap for these reasons, it's much more likely they become cheap because they act like douches. To not sign Cam Smith on the theory that a) someone better might unexpectedly be available; and b) they are available for reasons other than misconduct, is, IMO, total lunacy.

I think we need to start a "Norman sucks" thread pronto!

He's just not that into us

My prediction is that he will stay at the Storm and the fan day is the perfect opportunity to make it official.

He was never leaving. This is all just the cronk/thurston saga all over again

Would have to agree, and if that's the case good luck to him. I don't see it as a loss or missed opportunity. If he comes, great! If he doesn't great - more money to spend on younger stars.

Like DCE. In any case Macca is going to have us saying Cam who? by the end of 2014

Two years from now, the Broncos management will be bagged for not getting him too...

At least we tried this time.

The Macca theme is done to death. Needless to say, a lot of people disagree with you.

How do you know we didn't try other times?
Just because it wasn't a public bidding war, doesn't mean it didn't happen!

Needless to say, I couldn't give a ****.

But thanks for pointing out the bleeding obvious :)

Because of stories like this, and how does anyone know we did try if there is no evidence we didn't, sheesh silly argument.

Easy to find a similar story on DCE as well

THE Cowboys have moved a step closer to securing Johnathan Thurston after Broncos coach Anthony Griffin last night officially ruled out signing the Queensland Origin star.

North Queensland officials privately viewed their derby rivals as the greatest impediment to retaining Thurston, with the Broncos rumoured to be making a multi-million dollar play for the Test playmaker.

As revealed by The Courier-Mail, the Thurston camp met with Broncos operations chief Andrew Gee last month, fuelling speculation the 29-year-old was seriously considering finishing his NRL career at Red Hill.

But Thurston will not be joining the Broncos in 2014.
In the club's most definitive stance yet on the battle for Thurston's signature, Griffin said the Broncos had terminated talks after one meeting and is keeping the faith in halves triumvirate Peter Wallace, Corey Norman and Scott Prince, who was a shock departure from the Titans last month.

"No, we won't be signing him," Griffin told The Courier-Mail. "Our CEO Paul White feels the same way and I'm happy with our roster.

"The addition of Scott Prince (for 2013 and 2014) has been a bonus, so we're moving forward with the personnel that we've got.
"JT is a wonderful player but we've never made him an offer and we haven't even got to that point.

"Andrew Gee had one meeting with his manager and JT on their request and nothing came of it.

"We meet with player managers all the time. Johnathan's manager asked us to a meeting - he said JT is coming off-contract - to see if there was any interest.

"We had a meeting and there was no interest after that."

Yeah, because they talked to him and realised he had no intention of leaving and this was all an effort to make sure the cowboys gave him the payday he deserved. Obviously the club decided they rather spend the next few months being made to look like idiots by the media they got on the front foot... stupid management

Note the... "At their request" bit.

I can't name a source, but I know for a fact that things definitely did not go as cited in that article...

Thurston was only looking to up his value for a new contract at the Cows and was never interested in moving out, unless the Cowboys didn't come to the table.
Same thing happened with Cronk, and I know there was interest in DCE, but I don't know the story on that one.

Did you expect them to come out and say: "We went really hard for Thurston, but couldn't meet his asking price, so we'll just have to do with what we got".

The shit you say is no more speculation then what Dexter is saying yet you're giving him shit. Wake up to yourself.

Except there is a big difference between compliment and criticism based on speculation. No one is going to be upset at the first, but the latter is a different story. They even created a word for it... defamation!

Wow, just wow.

How is anything I've said defamation or even close to it, I've posted quotes from the men in charge????????

I did note the at their request which backs up my point of view that we didn't try for Thurston even more. If we had interest, surely the meeting would have been at our request.
