[Official] Smith re-signs with the Storm

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

I'm pretty sure Jake Friend will be off contract at the end of the year. Broncos should do everything they can to lure him to the club if Smith doesn't sign with us.

That's if Macca doesn't improve.

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

In any event, I stick by comments below.

Brisbane need a new hooker, period.

IMHO no that's not true. Brisbane need cam smith if it is possible, not a sideways move or a debatable slight upgrade in the hooker department.

Smith is the only other hooker (besides farah) that would be a big enough upgrade to warrant the massive money it would take to get them here.

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

Jake had a really great year last year, in a really good team..

He needs to back it up to retain his acclaim. If he does - absolutely, we should buy him. He's a Sunnie Coast boy I think, so I'm sure he would like to be closer to his family at some stage. Not to mention the added boon of better chances at Origin selection.

These are exactly my thoughts

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

They were just rehashing the Mole's story.

Even Bellamy is saying that he doesn't know what's happening and that he reckons that Smith hasn't made a decision as yet. I don't think Bellyache is a liar and if Smith had made this decision, don't you think that Bellamy would know?

Until there is an announcement, there's no point speculating anymore.

You don't think he's a liar? Are you kidding me?

What cheating?
What dangerous tackling techniques?

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

You're kidding right?

This doesn't change the fact that Brisbane need a better hooker. Unfortunately, there just aren't that many good ones (and no good ones available at the end of this season). They need to target Ballin, Friend or Luke at the end of 2015

Macca ain't up to first grade at the moment. He certainly isn't captaincy material.

That's simply not true. Macca is definitely a first grade standard hooker. There are obviously two different sides to this debate which is fantastic, it would be a very boring forum if there wasn't. However, it is hard to have a vigourous debate when things like this are said. Certainly there are many things that Macca needs to improve in his game, I don't think you will find anyone that would disagree with that, but to say he isn't first grade standard is just not true.

In other words you are saying that if tomorrow the broncos announced they arent continuing with him past 2014 he would play out his career in Qcup? do you honestly believe that?

I never kid, and you are incorrect.

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

Macca will have a enormous year and put all this to bed!

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

I am hoping that Macca not improving over the last two years had something to do with his low fitness. Therefore i believe that with an improved fitness level we are going to see him surge in form this year along with Ben Hunt.
You cannot make crucial decisions in a game when you are succumbing to a lack of fitness. Decision making will be better this year

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

Who genuinely thinks Bellamy wouldn't like about this? IMO, he wouldn't have re-signed with the Storm unless he was assured that Smith was going to stay also. Their careers are intertwined - Bellamy is nothing without Smith.

The only reason it got played out in the public arena was to make it appear as if all clubs were on a level field when it came to getting his signature. Smith wants a payday, and deservedly so, it's just a matter of how much is written in the books.

I reckon your dead right there

That and Wallace.

Macca performed better when Hunt was at 7. I think the extra fitness work and Wallace being gone will help him improve.

Issac Luke was easily the best hooker in the game this year. Smith is great but Luke played better and did a lot more out of dummy half.

I'm sorry, simply because he might get a go somewhere else doesn't change the fact that I don't think his skills are presently up to first grade standard. The fact that other clubs are struggling to find a decent hooker doesn't alter that.

If Brisbane thought that he was the gold standard, why chase anyone else?

Or are you saying thay by dint of the fact that Norman got a go with Parra that he is a first grade standard 5/8th?

Ps mate, my comment is only about half as silly as the idea of making him captain.

Pps. for other people on here, Jake Friend is off contract at the end of of 2015.

In relation to the bold, no ones comment is silly. It's their opinion and they are entitled to it... this is a discussion not a competition.

I said Macca is a first grade standard hooker. The fact that we were chasing smith doesn't change that. There is obviously a gap between first grade standard and 'gold standard'.

Norman is a first grade standard player, I dont think that is at 5/8 but thats just my opinion and it doesn't change the fact that Norman is of a first grade standard (as much as it pains me to say).

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

Granted Isaac Luke is great talent but he will never leave Sydney and I don't want him to. He isn't what we look for in a player hes a grub and as skillful as he is he ruins monetum constantly for south sydeny by knocking on at dummy half or the forward passes he throws nearly every game, he gets the fundamentals wrong alot and he is no better of a defender than macca.

We are a team that chases queensland talent mostly, to spend big bucks on a kiwi from nsw does not suit us especially when there talented hookers up and coming in the junior grades not to mention the likes of jake friend who is a great player, some say thats because of the roosters success but he was clever before then, watch the 2012 highlights of the broncos vs roosters gaem in sydney he was in everything.

and Macca is not the worse hooker out there, very predictable and fitness needs to be worked on but the only hooker they have chased since macca began as our first choice is the best hooker in the world, if not history, and Smith just brings more than the game with him thats why he is worth so much.

I hope he returns to his dummy passing, 40/20 kicking, cheeky grubbering best. I really think Macca taking on the line more wasn't because of poor judgement but becasue there was no real option to pass to, we were in shambles in attack line ups last year

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

If we do miss out on Smith lets just hope we sign someone else that is of high quality. We should have plenty of cash to make a big play at someone.

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

I think you guys are all dreaming. At the end of the day there has to be a reason for a big name player to leave his club. If it comes down to money then you will never get them because they do not like change when their own club will offer similar money.

You need their club to cut them or for them to have a break down with the coach otherwise you are relying on homesickness as was the case with our latest two signings.
Fundamentally recruiting comes down to getting the right juniors and then retaining the right ones from this bunch. You can get middle of the road players but almost impossible to buy a superstar.
We will not get Cherry Evans unless Manly cannot afford him or he does not want to stay. I do not expect us to get him.
We need to be looking at our young guys and hopefully bringing one or two playmakers through in 2015.

They will not even leave to win a premiership. Case in point Jarryd Hayne who has had ample opportunities to leave a club that has been on the nose for the last decade
