[Official] Smith re-signs with the Storm

would be disappointed if we dont get Smith but Manly have not got anywhere near $1m to keep DCE but we will if Smith does not come - on the other side of the coin I think Maccas been pretty good over the last 2 years having to put up with being subbed off when he was going great guns just because stupid Hook looked at his watch and said "OH 23 MINUTES AND 32 SECONDS ARE UP SO TAKE MACCA OFF" = Knuckle head decisions just to give
Pretty sure he's never come off after 23 minutes but I've seen him come off after the half hour mark looking absolutely shagged a few times.

Yeah he will need to slow down the tackling. He racks up pretty much the most tackles of all hookers but doesn't play 80. I think people see his performance with biased eyes though and shouldn't expect him to play at smith levels who is probably the best 9 ever. Ill admit macca had a poor year with the boot but as soon as Wallace was punted he picked up his old kicking game which is at the very least top three with farah and smith being the only other notable kickers from 9. I actually quite like his running game which you really got to see when hodges moved to fullback and got injured. You have to admit Hodges running every single fourth tackle would put his running game off. Rewatch our latest game vs parra. It was a masterclass. There are valid concerns though:

most prominantly his inconsistency

his decision making close to the line (running too much)

his short kicking could improve

the general speed of his decision making out of dummy half although i believe this to be due to a lack of organisation amongst the other players without a solid game plan or dominant half to direct them. If you want to see how bad this is watch Wallace knocking on at dummy half. He is standing organising whilst the ball is played and it roles into his feet.

this is his make or break year particularly with his consistency. He needs a full year of form.

I reckon Macca's going to be forced to do more kicking anyway. Hunt's not known for the length if his kick and I'm not sure what kind of length Kahu has, so I expect Macca to do most of the clearing kicks in general play.

Macca and Hunt together again excites me, they play well together and know each others' games really well. Throw in the X factor of Barba and the unknown ness of the six, we could have a very unpredictable spine and that could be amazing. It could also be atrocious but it is amazing at this part of the season.

Yeah that is one positive I'm taking out of it. In isolation each player is serviceable but not excellent. Together I'm hoping they're worth more than the sum of their parts.

was very much on the fence about Smith but probably tilted 53% against signing him .. I just don't think it would've been a great value spend by the Broncos .. Five years ago yes but not now .. I likened it a bit to buying a used car and paying more for it than the original owner paid for it brand new.

it well and truly opens the door for the club to chase quality players with more "tomorrows" than "yesterdays" ...

On a side note, I have no idea how the Storm plan on giving Smith, Slater and Cronk their golden handshake contracts virtually all at the same time ... good luck with that.

Same way they did last time. They will just be more careful this time

They won't put it down in a book this time.

Tbh id rather Macca then Josh McCrone. Tho i do think missing out on Smith is a big loss and i hope we pick up a decent hooker in the near future, surely we will go hard for DCE now.

Yeah, I reckon the only people more disappointed than the broncos that we missed out on smith is manly

Strong and reliable source if mine suggests that Hannant will move on. Probably to the Titans for 2015. Same source suggests Yow Yeh would also be looking at a significant downgrade of contract in 2015 and Hodges is set to sign a one year deal only. This would free up a large chunk to chase DCE..... The problem is, DCE is all but guaranteed the captaincy of Manly once Lyon retires and from all reports is quite settled with a young family. He is however, very good mates with several of the Broncos from Wests Colts days who have all been in his ear about a potential move.

I would have thought Keiron Foran was looking to be groomed for the manly captaincy?

Yeah that hannat rumour doesn't seem to go away, when it comes to yow yeh although it would suck for him to get a downgraded contract but i mean if he can't fire this year or play when the comps starts, what choice do they really have.

According to a mate of mine who has contacts within the organisation, Foran is their #1 option for Manly captaincy after Lyon retires, and Cherry-Evans isn't too pleased, as that is his main goal at the moment, to captain a club.

THE Broncos are resigned to losing the battle for Cameron Smith after the Storm assembled a club-record $4 million-plus package labelled "too good to refuse".The Courier-Mail can reveal even Brisbane chiefs expect Smith to stay in Melbourne, with Storm's new owners tabling one of the richest deals in the code's history at the eleventh hour.
Only another surprise backflip will prevent Smith inking a multi-year Storm contract, with an option for a fourth year in 2018, to finish his career as a one-club servant.

...

The turning point came after Christmas, when the Storm, aware of Brisbane's ambitious bid, increased their offer by around $400,000 annually to remain in the hunt as Smith inched closer to a Broncos defection.

I wonder just how much they have offered him ... their initial offer would have been big as well, so to raise it by 400k a year is massive.

might as well hover round the Storm, because with the size the Smith contract is likely to be, they will have to lose some talent to stay under the cap

we could likely offer him the captaincy ... and making Parker and Hodges the co-captains seems to be only a short term option. maybe we are lining the decks, to go hard after DCE. Since Smith is likely staying put, we would have plenty of cash available
