I wonder just how much they have offered him ... their initial offer would have been big as well, so to raise it by 400k a year is massive.

might as well hover round the Storm, because with the size the Smith contract is likely to be, they will have to lose some talent to stay under the cap

In all honesty though how are Melbourne affording that under the cap?

They don't really have much quality outside of their big 3, they have lost a lot over the years. Buying George Rose is a pretty good indication.

They do have some incredible rookies, which is what makes them so successful. Nobody can argue their success rate with bringing players through.

They are excellent at identifying cheaper players who easily fit into their structure too.

I am honestly glad about this. Don't get me wrong, Smith is the best hooker in the game ever but he is getting old in football years. Everyone inevitably slows down and that amount of money just cannot be justified for an old man no matter how good he has been. His best years are not in front of him.

Now we have the ruffed and the option of captaincy and marquee player status to offer to DCE and if we get him, he is a much better buy than Smith because he will still be young when we get him. It is a massive boom or bust ambition to get him and if we do, WOW!!

The he other benefit is this has shown Macca he is not a protected species and has to pull his finger out if he wants to be our long-term hooker and that can only be a good thing!!

How come the management at the Broncos cannot seal deals - surly with the likeihood of Smith not coming north then we will have 2m available for DCE
I do not know what Stewart is on but it would have to be around $450 which is freed up in their cap but after upgrading Foran and even if the offered DCE $1m we could beat that by 50% at least and give him a year or 2 and he would be automatic choice as captain

Man don't be naive . Some marquee players contract may be up for renewal but that does not mean they are actually on the market, regardless of what the papers or Internet forums say. Dce may also fall into this category , time will tell. It may be tempting to blame management but don't kid yourself.

We can't offer him a contract for another year ... and a year is a long time in rugby league.

besides all that article really says is that his wife is settle where they are now and Manly will likely be able to offer him a big upgrade by offloading Stewart.

And if anyone thought that Manly wouldn't put up a huge fight for him, they are deluding themselves.

You also have to remember that Foran also comes off contract around that time, and he will also want a big pay day. Manly may have to make a choice between them, and if that happens then we can have a good shot at one of them.

Paper talk about players intentions for 2 years down the track means absolutely nothing, and is just away for them to sell papers.

They're getting rid of players because they can't afford to keep them so I doubt that unless they lose a couple of big name payers they will be able to upgrade any big contracts for a while.

Perhaps Broncos could try to lure Will Chambers to the club when he is off contract at the end of 2016.

When Hodges retires, I would try out Vidot in the centre position. If it doesn't work out, go for Chambers.

I'm interested to know how a speculative report about what a reporter thinks will happen has become proof that the broncos 'can't seal deals'

The Smith deal was always going to be about the Storm giving Smith enough money to resist the temptation of moving home. I don't think the Broncos could have done a lot IMO.

Exactly. We've just weakened their cap by $400k. Though the cynic in me says that it's just a bit more book fudging they have to do.

well I'm sure they would prefer to lose 400k rather than lose Smith .... but they would still be upset about losing cap space. That space could have been used on another player they needed, like a better five-eight or another prop
