[Official] Smith re-signs with the Storm

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

I think you guys are all dreaming. At the end of the day there has to be a reason for a big name player to leave his club. If it comes down to money then you will never get them because they do not like change when their own club will offer similar money.

You need their club to cut them or for them to have a break down with the coach otherwise you are relying on homesickness as was the case with our latest two signings.
Fundamentally recruiting comes down to getting the right juniors and then retaining the right ones from this bunch. You can get middle of the road players but almost impossible to buy a superstar.
We will not get Cherry Evans unless Manly cannot afford him or he does not want to stay. I do not expect us to get him.
We need to be looking at our young guys and hopefully bringing one or two playmakers through in 2015.

They will not even leave to win a premiership. Case in point Jarryd Hayne who has had ample opportunities to leave a club that has been on the nose for the last decade

this

Which is why setting up the Logan acadamy and hiring Edwards as a talent scout were such important moves for us.

are you guys serious ? i think macca has been one of our better players over the last couple of years. he racks up tons of tackles in the 50 - 60 minutes he plays and often finds his way through when taking the line on. i believe if he keeps working on his kicking game and is able to take more pressure off our young halves this year he could be one of the top 5 hookers in the comp. obviously he is no cameron smith but you cant always have the best of everything,, macca and granville may very well suprise us this year and with milford coming in next year along with barba this year our speed around the ruck might help out both of their games

Im serious, as in I seriously agree with you. Well said mate

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

The main problem he has is speed, and that has a flow on effect to every play. Also, he needs to mature in his decision making as he takes far too many useless runs from DH. Everybody knows he will do it. And his kicking game needs to step up more than a notch or two. Yes he tackles his heart out, which is great. But I wonder if he tackles too much which leaves little in the tank for attack.

Hopefully you are right and this is his year. For the sake of both his career and the team's potential success.

Unfortunately in the modern game you can't afford a hooker who can only tackle. He is the most important part of the attack because he has his hands on the ball more than anyone.

I agree with you re his speed. Unfortunately when the DH (not just Macca but any DH) gets tackled it inveriable stuffs up the set because he gets pushed backwards or he gets dominated.

Macca needs to get a lot better.

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

I'd personally cut off both my legs for Macca to be half the player that some of you think he could be.

I'd love him to be brilliant, I just don't see it.

Ps I didn't mean to say anyone's opinion was silly. I expressed myself poorly.

Not very confident about signing him anyway Smith has given his football life to the Storm and he is inseparable to the younger players and Storm team in general.

Re: Triple M News: Smith to stay at Melbourne, Parker/Hodges retention negotiations b

the other thing is macca is still pretty young as has racked up over 100 games for our club,, he is only going to mature with age. would anyone seriously want him going to another club and becoming a 300 gamer elsewhere while we have the problem in a few years of finding another hooker when smith retires. there would be plenty of clubs that would take him off our hands if he was unsatisfied sitting on the bench behind smith. and if they both stayed then that just puts granville ( who i believe can make a real difference in our speed around the ruck ) another spot back from cementing a position then he may leave also. is all of that really worth one player for a few years on his way out ? surely a strike centre for when hodgo retires would be a more fruitful endeavour.

Merged into the Cam Smith rumour thread...

I do wonder how much Macca's lack of development has to do with our tumultuous coaching situation since he has been in first grade. It mirrors it.

To what extent though? It's not like his development has been stunted to the level Hunt's had been, his in to triple digits of games at hooker, lots of stability in that position to develop your game and consistency even at a player level, this season is really make or break for McCullough regardless of Smith.

Yeah, you are right. But different people need different things. I dunno really, I'm just throwing out variables.

It probably didn't help to a degree, certainly I think there are things the coaching is responsible for, but ultimately there are things about his own game he controls that haven't improved that concern me.

How much of McCulloughs issues are down to our crap display from our forwards or the way we have been coached. Our poor fitness can't have helped either. His inconsistency is a real problem though.

Interesting times ahead if we miss out on Smith. I'd say we have thrown the kitchen sink at him so we will have a war chest to throw at other players if we miss out on him.

would be disappointed if we dont get Smith but Manly have not got anywhere near $1m to keep DCE but we will if Smith does not come - on the other side of the coin I think Maccas been pretty good over the last 2 years having to put up with being subbed off when he was going great guns just because stupid Hook looked at his watch and said "OH 23 MINUTES AND 32 SECONDS ARE UP SO TAKE MACCA OFF" = Knuckle head decisions just to give

Hunt a go
sorry pressed send button too early - lol
