Given they're second tier, can't Staggs still play for Tonga in the world cup or something? I swear they changed that rule to only apply to English and NZ players.
IIRC they changed the rule so if you play for Australia, at all, you can't play for a 2nd tier nation until the next world cup when it resets.

But as long as they're not selected for Aus, they can represent a 2nd tier nation.

Could be wrong.

You might be right, in which case it's fucked.

One game for Tonga for like 5k or two more games for NSW at 15k each.

Australia isn't the best RL team, they just bribe the best players, which is funny given how important the salary cap is to the integrity of the local game but is thrown out internationally, so Australia basically have 3-5x the salary cap of other nations.
I get there is a money issue, but because of the lack of quality competition it just seems those that play for Australia have less passion for it, but to say it's not the best RL team is completely wrong, it's just if we face a team with decent quality they are almost certainly going to want it more.

If they played for Australia like they do in Origin they would be putting cricket scores on everyone.

I'm not sure how it all works, but all the calls for Tonga to become a Tier 1 nation don't make a lot of sense to me... it will effectively cut them off from having better players that don't want to miss out on the pay day that comes with playing origin. At the moment they have access to Staggs, Tupou, etc. because they're Tier 2... they lose that as soon as they move up a Tier, but do they get anything in return??

Maybe more games against Tier 1 nations, but does that give them access to more funding, etc.

Are match payments for international games provided by the governing body i.e. ARL, etc.?

If so then the tiering doesn't help them... the NRL is the biggest comp so they would automatically get the most money to splash to their players. Presumably the bulk of this money comes from TV rights for the games, followed by sponsorships, etc.

I wonder if it would be viable to accumulate the funds associated with TV rights for international games and then distribute the money out to the participating nations, at which point you could bring tiering into it.

So if Tonga did become a Tier 1 nation those players would be paid the same match payments as Australian players.

That way it's an even playing field when it comes to who players want to represent.

I'd also suggest that qualifications for Origin be somewhat separated to Internationals.. if you meet the criteria to play origin (i.e. age you lived/moved to Aust, Junior Rep games, etc.) then you can play origin regardless of which international team you play for.

Kiwi players are largely becoming available for origin purely because NRL teams are importing them to Australia at an early age.

I'm sure a lot of those guys feel passion for NZ, Fiji, etc. and can also feel equally as passionate about Qld or NSW because that's where they got their opportunity to become a fulltime professional NRL player in the first place.

The national RL institutions pay for their own National team to play thats why Australia pays the most because it's run by the ARLC who run the NRL so they have the most money by an insane margin.

Imo untill international Rugby league grows more there shouldn't even be such a thing as Tier 1 and 2 nations it should be all free for all(so we can get higher quality international games while the game is still growing in the international stage), the RLIF who runs the international game has no money at all to run it properly and tbh I think the NRL should be involved in running it so they can fund more games between the higher ranking nations, to help it grow to a point the RLIF can properly afford to run it at a standard that's useful to the game, there should be atleast 2 weeks during the season where the competition takes off so they can play the international games imo that don't conflict with origin, without doing so it's going to stagnate.

Anyone remember the squealer who dobbed on Mutalito last year? Wonder what he thinks of these NSW players being selected for Somoa and Tonga?

How incredibly and insultingly idiotic for our players and fans to be forced to trundle over to a state that has nothing to do with either the contest or even rugby league.

What a fucking clown show they're running when more than half of our players identify as Polynesian and we don't even have a single Polynesian identity team. But we have one in Melbourne, based around a bunch of mercenaries from elsewhere.

What a fucking circus.

Is there going to be anyone in our top 30 not injured or playing rep footy next week

Don't know if Oates will play but happy he's in the squad. It's recognition for his career best form.
Yeah, the great thing is if Oates makes the squad that will be 5 QLD players and 2 NSW players to make origin rep squads - Riki and Martin for NZ, Herbie for England.

It’s great to be able show that to young talented players who are weighing up options. A guy like Walsh may have thought twice about leaving if he says that 10 of our starting 13 have made current rep squads.

I wonder how the Polynesian players parents feel about the commentators always calling their children beasts and monsters ? And the good old , look at the size of him !
And other than Benji [who is Australian ] who is their representative on these commentary teams ?

It will become an issue in time I believe .
