Origin Scheduling is a joke and a blight to the game.

I wish they'd at least try standalone weekends again. It worked fine in 2001. It didn't stop the post-origin hangover, but it did eliminate the pointless rounds where origin players were unavailable and the need for byes (14 teams then, 26 rounds).

I am sure they could come up with some kind of hybrid system between what you have suggested and what we currently have if they really wanted to. Where there's a will.... but they just don't give 2 sh@ts about anything but the bottom line.

I'm not for consecutive matches, but definitely for a move to standalone Sunday Origins. I still think they need to be spaced out by a couple of weeks, with a couple of regular season weekends in between.

If Origins are going to be stand alone they have to be Saturday nights. The only bad thing about origin is working the next day with a hangover.

Why not consecutive?

TV deal logistics aside --> I really see a 3 week consecutive model working. Mid season break --> QLD v NSW --> Same teams versing each other three times... it is a beaut! Also... this way... hopefully this transitions into --> win the series 2-0 ... presentation gets done right then and there... and the 3rd game becomes more of a 'blooding future NSW/QLD players game' (maybe... worth a shot)...
Also --> Maybe we can implement another 3-game series of something.... so it runs at the same time as Origin... so we get 2 games / week ............. lets say one on FRI and one on SUN arvo. That is only ONE less game for free to air TV anyway..... I know pay TV would be peeved but surely if they REALLY wanted to they can work something out.

Have a 3-match Under 20s Origin series in parallel.
Have a 3-match Pacific Islands tournament (NZ vs PNG vs Fiji).

So many possibilities.

^Exactly...

If RL could just all work together - we'd be so much better off.

It would also give the players a damn break --> get over any niggling injuries and what not... it's a WIN WIN...

helps the rep players out by not having to back up + they are not 'in and out' of their clubs during this period... ALSO... maybe if the team is going well the coach can rest a couple of key players for a week after the origin as well... TBH I can't believe we aren't doing this RIGHT NOW.... I can't fathom why people think we MUST have Origin on a WED because it 'works'.... it's garbage.

It sounds so easy when you say 3 weeks but the comp would be shut down for 4 weeks from finish to restart. The game is trying to expand into Melb but hey lets shut it down for a month and give the rugby league followers a rep game they don't have an investment in.

Hence I'm comfortable with 3 standalone weekends 3 weeks apart. That would effectively be no different to what people get now with 2 byes and at least one game where you and/or your opposition are depleted by Origin unavailability.

Common sense and Ch 9 hmmm.

And that's what it comes down to. They don't really care if they have club games that are crap quality mid year. They don't care if players play injured or the best performing teams fall apart after Origin.

And why would they? Their business is selling advertising and getting ratings.

5 years before the NRL can actually put player welfare first.

Why not consecutive?

As Dexter says, the logistics of shutting down the comp for four weeks mid-season make it impractical if not plain impossible.

I've said elsewhere that I'd like the season to be shorter, and if they were going to introduce a Origin series played in consecutive weeks, the ideal place for it would be after the grand final. I think eighteen games is an ideal number. Keep two byes for each team and spread them out so that the season lasts twenty or twenty-two weeks, start slightly later and finish earlier - GF on the first weekend of September. Then launch into the rep season, with the Origins on consecutive weekends in September and any Tests in October/November. I think this is too far from the norm to ever be considered, though, and I do wonder if Origin in September would still feel like Origin...

Yeah, nobody would ever do that, but it's something I've thought would be ideal for a number of years.

How do they pick origin teams when maybe half the players haven't played for a month due to their teams not being part of the semi finals?

How do they pick Test/World Cup players in the same circumstances?

tests and world cups arent a pimple on State of Origins backside.

quite frankly, noone gives a $hit about test footy. State of Origin is the games premier showcase, unlike test footy where australia can generally pick any 17 nuffies who havent played for 2 months and still usually win comfortably.

The players are still training.

Also most players are from the teams still in the finals.
