Lockyer didn't do that. He trusted his halfback to steer the team around, and got involved when the play required it, he saw something to exploit, or he needed to take the game by the scruff.
 
Yeah i remember that. I'm not sold on widdop , although he is playing great atm . But look at how well he went when the team wasn't firing.

Most halves struggle when their team isn't firing ... they can't do it on their own

Yeah you're right, that bold part isn't because of game management skills he acquired with time, and he didn't hone his kicking skills while maintaining his running game until very late in his career.

I still just don't get why we are going after Bird. If they feel the McGuire at lock thing isn't working for whatever reason, we still have Arrow.
