Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

well there you go. have to beat knights and dragons at home in the next two weeks, and then it will come down to beating storm in rnd 26 to decide if we make the 8 or not. any other loss from here and we're officially gone.

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

Not convinced we'll win any of our remaining games this year.

Come on... Doubt we'll beat the Storm, but we're absolutely capable of dishing out a beating to the other two.

Last night sucked, but few teams have the power through the middle and the class out wide to pressure us like Souths.

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

Never quite understood fans of teams wanting to squeak into the 8.

Parramatta made the GF after "squeaking" into the 8. and only just lost to a cheating team.

besides for me its more about wanting the team to win every game they play ...

To be fair Parra won like 9 or 10 games in a row and were on fire.......The Broncos are not in the same position.

the point was that they came from 8th place and nearly won the comp ... i'm not saying that we can do the same, but it is possible to do.

and thats likely why fans want their teams to squeak into the 8 ... because come finals, anything is possible

Ignore hayseed, Foordy.

I guess it means you get to watch your team perform for at least one week longer.

Even if we are going to lose, i'd rather watch the Broncos than another team run around.

Finals experience is also very valuable for the younger players in the team.

Oh that makes sense. The 12 year old, sorry I mean "Canadian rocker" couldn't stay away

The Eels of 2009 were a different league to us and had been on fire for a couple of months before the finals before they crashed in the last round and came back again. They didn't just lose to the Storm in the GF. Melbourne were a lot better and stronger on the day and the score didn't really reflect that but it did reflect the effort Parramatta put in on the day.

Re: Out of the 8, second year in a row

The difference between us being a top 4 side and not making the 8 will hopefully be the coaching influence of Bennett.

If he can just give us that edge that Hook could not ingrain in the players, we will be a killer team. It's time. I think there is/was a complacency, a staleness and probably softness in this squad coached by the same bloke since they were 17.

I've lamented all year the close losses.. I put it down to the mental element rather than fitness, conditioning or ability.

This is a terrific point, subsbligh. I've always felt there is a "she'll be right" and "close enough is good enough" mentality the last few years. It's very frustrating watching us match it with the top teams only to drift away late in the game. A classic example was the opening round of the 2012 season against Manly. We were content to just match it with them whereas they went for the win. As long as the effort is there, in other words.

Personally, there's nothing wrong with a mentality like that but it's tough to build a winning culture on it. To build a winning football team they need to be winning consistently and that means marrying the great effort they show (and tbh they do bust their arses more often than not despite the scoreline) with a hunger and desire to be the better team. I hope Bennett can provide that.

Why are our finals hopes looking forlorn?

Building a winning culture means building a team which does the absolute fundamentals 100%. That is Griffin's major shortcoming, but not only his, it goes right through the club, right back to the juniors, 20's etc.

Let's start with defence: tackling technique - hit, not grab and drag, line speed - in their face, aggression - hit to hurt and drive back like Tunza did, not sliding laterally but moving up on the ball runner.

Then there is attack: shape and structure - depth, composure and a repertoire of rehearsed set plays called by our play makers all over the field, using our strike weapons: Copley, Hodges, Gillett etc. as well as making Parker the focal point of 2nd phase plays all over the park.

Then there is mental toughness and consistency.

We have the talent, we don't need any more for next year. What we don't have is a team. That is Bennett's job.

The culture that needs changing is to coach the basics, the fundamentals of winning football from juniors up to 1st grade. At the moment, all that Hook has coached is ... well, I don't know if there is an answer to that. What has Hook achieved?

As for making the finals, of course we can do it, assuming a massive turn around in defence and attack, which somehow, I can't see happening. Hook's influence is too ingrained, but again, miracles do happen, but as has been the case far too often this year, it will come on the back of individual brilliance rather than a true team effort, as Souths showed so clearly the other night..

Lol at the idea of saying "of course" we can make the finals if only we have a complete turnaround in both and attack under the coaching of Griffin.

That's like saying of course Ben Hannant could run the Olympic 100m if only he has a complete turnaround in his body shape, fitness and speed.

I take your point, but I want you take mine: watch Parker and Hannant combine for Hannant to score a try v Warriors in Round 19

Don't need Hannant to run 100m. Just need set plays. Called, executed, consistently.

We have done it so we can do it. Problem is we don't and it's not rocket science for the team to be told: JUST DO IT FFS

Has Wayne Bennett been coaching us for the last two years? No. I've moved the last few posts to the Wayne thread. Keep it there.
