Parker and Slater MAY miss Origin 3 - who to move where?

you have to remember though that from 2003 to 2005 our team was pretty terrible, and NSWs team was awesome. we didnt lose because of anything he did. in fact we won one because of something he did.

Yes, but the point is he was on the bench to come and run NSW's big forwards ragged late in the game. He only ever achieved that once, in game 3 2003, when QLD dominated.

Having a small, elusive, electrifying player on the bench to come on and reek havoc late in the game only ever works if his teammates have already smashed the opposition into submission - certainly at Origin level.

The one thing about Boyd is he always steps up at Origin, I honestly can't remember him having a bad game. The way he chased Stewart when he scored his second try proves to me that he loves the Maroon. If he went to centre I'm confident he would have a great game. The issue with Slater out is, do we weaken one position to make another one stronger. The least disruption to this team would be Barba straight to fullback, but if Inglis is ever going to play fullback for QLD this is the match. Given this is a very important game I'd move him there and get O'Neil on the wing or Nielsen in the centres.

If we move Inglis out of left centre he gets replaced with someone with no attacking ability at all. At least if we move Boyd back it gives us someone who is a very safe fullback and can execute the 2nd man play superbly. I'd rather put O'Neil on the wing and Boyd at fullback.

Alec, If having a utility was our priority then the most sensible option would have been (from game 1 not now ) DCE at 7 and Cronk on the bench. Bringing Barba on as a DH means you drag Smith or rearrange the halves if you leave Smith on which is getting a little silly just to try and get Barba on.

Porthoz, I said size not height
Semantics... :cheesy:

Seriously though, you were talking about the high ball, so I deducted you meant height.

Not really mate, the high ball contest is often as much about weight and bulk as height.

Hello nana Gagai, welcome to the forum.

Embarrassed for you I can't see anything, granpa Gagai.

Game one in a fresh series, not a decider for a record setting 7th in a row. I am sure the selectors have the same reservations as most people do about Barba under the pressure of Origin (frankly this game is one of the biggest deciders ever) with the high ball and defence. He'll play one day, but not this day.

The ONLY 2 options I think need to be considered:

1. Inglis
2. Boyd
3. Neilsen
4. Hodges
5. Tate

OR

1. Boyd
2. O'Neill
3. Inglis
4. Hodges
5. Tate

As Coxy said, Tate is a ball hog. He can still defence in the centres when he needs to.

If Tonga was fit he would slot straight into the centres Inglis to fullback no questions.

Curiously, imagine an alternate history thread and if these (seemingly QLDers) players had of changed their allegiances;

1. Hoffman
2. Boyd
3. Inglis
4. Hodges
5. Tate

or

1. Inglis
2. Boyd
3. Reed
4. Hodges
5. Tate

In this parallel universe, my first choice QLD backline would be;

1. Slater
2. Hoffman
3. Inglis
4. Reed
5. Tate

You have two weeks to invent the flux capacitor, make it happen

At first i wanted barba to come into fullback but the more i think about it, it has to be GI at fullback. He is our best weapon and if NSW stick to the same umbrella defence they employed for game 2, GI's involvement at centre will again be limited. We need GI to have the ball in his hands every set, so its a no brainer for me, its GI to fullback. He has been in the form of his career playing there for souths.

After that we have a few options, but it comes down to either Oneill on the wing, and tate at centre, or nielsen into GI's spot. As i have said before, i think nielsen offers very little in attack BUT i think with moving GI to fullback our attack will easily be better than it was in game 2, so to me nieslen to centre brings the least disruptions and probably the safest choice.

Tate shouldnt be moved, he has been brilliant and safe as a house on the wing. Boyd is no centre, and is horribly out of form atm.

1. Inglis
2. Boyd
3. Nielsen.
4. Hodges
5. Tate

He's not out of form in a QLD jersey though. Don't play around with the team do much. Boyd to FB, O'Neil to the wing. Safe spot for a debut winger to start and Boyd is a FB so won't have any issues. Plus he's always stepping up that extra bit in a maroon jersey.

He hasnt had to really do anything in a QLD jersey yet lol. Moving boyd messes with the team just as much as moving inglis. Inglis at fullback is way more lethal than boyd at fullback, and is far more lethal than inglis at centre. its the best option for qld and im pretty sure its the one mal will go with

Queenslander's backline is the way to go IMO.

The more I think about Inglis at fullback the more I like it. His form at club level has been sensational and his support play/second-man play execution has been just as good as Slater since he moved there at Souths.

The biggest plus though is his physical presence. Slater sometimes simply gets bashed out of the game at Origin level and I fear the same would happen to either Boyd or Barba on debut. They won't be able to out muscle Inglis as easily - he's just as likely to run over blokes as he is around them.

Nielsen looked a little out of his league last year but he'll hold the fort ok. QLD have won games with the likes of Hannany, Mogg, Wesser on the wing etc.

I hope the selectors don't bring in Barba. He's a volatile (read: rocks or diamonds) player and game 3 for 7 in a row is NOT the time to blood someone. Someone so young anyways.

Well said, especially about the physical presence. Slater got nailed in origin 2, and i would go as far as saying he was scared of taking the ball up at times. He got monstered. There is no way barba and bowen could handle that treatment. Id like to see them try do that to GI. GI's frame also gives him a big advantage in the air. Often bowen and barba are knocked away from the bomb when jumping, whereas GI can hold his own.

As you said, nielsen will hold his own and wont cost us points. He wont create any, but with GI at the back i dont think anyone needs to be creating things coz GI will take care of that

This is the side I'd come up with. I'm under the assumption of Thaiday fit but Parker and Slater unfit.

1. Inglis
2. Tate
3. Hodges
4. Nielsen
5. Boyd
6. Thurston
7. Cronk
8. Scott
9. Smith
10. Civoniceva
11. Myles
12. Thaiday
13. Harrison
------------------------
14. Hannant
15. Shillington
16. McGuire
17. Te'o

Too much knee jerk not enough common sense.
