OFFICIAL Patrick Carrigan re-signs

Thank you for your honesty......but, it's a real thing

and good players....the real good ones, the ones worth hanging onto, don't get it.

You will get it in the end. Takes some people a while.

Bitchy........

"......the dead weight, know as Carrigan, has rejected club's offer"

Look ....Pat has got a good heart, I'm sure, but at best he's an honest plodder. We have better talent coming through.

I wish Pat well......somewhere else.

(btw....hopefully not at Redcliffe)

It wont be, they play in ISC. It could be at the Phins though, but more than likely it will still be with the Broncos.

You can't (afford to) have a forward pack full of X factor flashy players capable of winning a game off their own bat. Those type of players (other than Haas) tend to float in and out of games (Fifita) and are great when they are on and in the mood, not so much when they aren't. In a well balanced forward pack there has to be room for worker forwards who will do the 1%ers, the Andrew Gee, Gavin Allen, Mark Hohn, Trevor Matterson type of player.

When you add in that he does appear to have legitimate leadership claims in the future and he is a clean skin that presents well and is good for culture, if you can make a fair deal, this is the type of player you must keep. As for the defensive deficiencies, that to me appeared to be from him being overplayed and being knackered from trying to do too much.

I completely agree with you and just for the record, I think he is a good player, please don't think I'm saying he isn't. I just think that at this point in his career and the associated risk of coming back from a long term injury, we should not be breaking the bank for him.

I can see the comparisons with Parker and also would not be surprised if he follows a similar career trajectory BUT (and this is the key point here), where has overpaying for potential got us? To a wooden spoon is the answer. This is my point, I am not questioning his value as a player, I am questioning his value to the salary cap and we CANNOT keep paying kids (which he still is really) more than they are currently worth.

If we pay Patty $450k, then we stay stuck in the same cycle that got Flegler his apparent overpriced salary as well (and I am his biggest fan).

The point is, you are absolutely right that you need those role players, those worker forwards but you just CANNOT be paying them star money.

I wouldn't say 450k a year is star money these days. We are paying Riki apparently 300k plus and he's done bugger all really yet to warrant that.

Is $450K really star money?

I'll admit I'm far from fully across the salary cap, but I'd have thought that was about mid-tier. I'd think $600K-$800K would be star money, with $800K+ for your elite players. $400K-$600K is the range I'd want to be paying for those good, reliable, talented players you build your team on, like Pat.

Having said that, I don't think we should go to $450K for Pat straight up - I'd rather a three-year deal starting at $350K and going up $50K each year. Coming back from the injury, perhaps a team option in the third year would be smart, but Pat might not want that, and that's his call.

Good question. I assume 450k is star (not superstar money). I would be ok with 400k at most. I just think the extra 50-100k spent here or there is still an extra 50-100k you can't spend elsewhere. I don't know really how much a salary cap means a workhorse forward is worth but to me, 450k just seems high. And if we did get Capewell on 450k, we are saying Patty is worth as much as an origin and premiership winning forward and in my opinion, he's not, not yet anyway.

Patty isn't worth anything over 300-350 at the moment. Sure he could make more elsewhere, and best of luck to him if he does.

Where does all the Carrigan hate stem from? He was literally 1 of like 3 actually putting in week in week out in the 2019 season.
I don't think more than a few hate him, lots of people just don't rate him that highly. Putting in effort and ability are very different things.

Either way, Carrigan should be playing some games before signing a deal, coming off an ACL and average form isn't the best time to sign.

Is there no middle ground when it comes to discussions anymore (I already know the answer to this).

Just because some of us don't feel he is worth over a certain amount in no whatsoever means we hate him, that's just silly.

He's a really good player, just not worth what he apparently wants, I am no sure how that equates to being a hater.

There is very little middle ground at times here. One thing I do disagree with though is the comments about him not being worth what he apparently wants. This is one of the few times where there has been no mention of money in the media so we all don't really have any idea yet.
