NEWS Payne Haas retracts immediate release from Broncos then

They also used to enjoy smoking in the car with their kids, using homophobic slurs, and given the misses a slap around. What’s your point?

Gambling and alcohol abuse are the 2 biggest scourges of our society and countless working class men have ended their lives due to both of them.

Yeah **** off Payne Haas if you can’t be a good ol’ workin class Aussie, go back to…Newcastle!
This. But also I think that the 'typical Aussie' likes to drink and gamble is a bit of a false narrative sold to us by these corporations. A lot of stats show an overall decline in both aspects. But yea, gambling and alcohol advertising needs to be regulated a bit better, especially its exposure towards children (like other adult products currently are).

I have no problem with Hass wanted to stick up for whatever he believes in, but I guess he also has to understand the hand that feeds him. But yes, he's still a money hungry dick and I hope we kill him tonight and then he goes to the Tigers and kills his career.

This thread has really gone on an interesting tangent, but I love the debate.

IMO, as @Renegade pointed out, all advertising exists to inspire people to buy into something they really don't need. I mean, you don't see ads for tap water. I personally get a severe hankering for KFC on a Friday night during the game. It's pervasive.

In terms of Haas speaking out about it, I think it does seem hypocritical, but most movements and societal changes came from vocal individuals speaking out about issues from a platform. I don't like that celebrities exist, but if they use their platform for objectively positive societal change, I think that is better than nothing.

However, as others have pointed out, it should be the right of the individual to make those decisions for oneself. Smoking is directly impactful on third parties, and so the concessions made around where one can smoke without harming someone else is fair IMO. The issue with all these personal choices is informed decision making and balanced portrayal of facts.

Drinking and gambling are social activities. They are ingrained in our society and are openly public actions people can engage in. When drinking is normalised in advertising it is fair because it is representative of current society. However, so is abstinence from alcohol and this should be given equal weight. For example, for every advertisement showing the positive aspects of drinking or gambling, there should be, in the same ad break, one which shows fairly the negative aspects.

Drunken brawls, vomiting and chronic sickness, misbehaviour with drinking. For gambling, the losses and chasing them, the sadness of seeing grandma punching the pokie as she wittles away her savings alone.

It is in this way that children are better able to see both sides of the coin, because currently it isn't so. It is also in this way that parents are forced to engage in those conversations with their children, because a lot of the time they're kept pretty busy and so it's easier not to.

We do normalise drinking now, far more than gambling, and I think this is easily shown by people's responses here. But if gambling ads continue to be shown with such regularity, tipping competitions continue to be promoted by sports (supercoach, for example) then it will become quite normalised and not seen to be such a big deal to see a group of people at the pub drinking and gambling.

So, while Haas probably is being hypocritical in his asking for these sponsors to be removed (especially saying it's because they're essentially coming in with money to ingratiate themselves), I do think it is good that he raises the topic. What I dislike is that he conflates it with religion, or brings religion into the subject. Especially when he seems to objectify money and also sees being a sporting star as a good societal contribution. It really rubs on my secular sensibilities, because one could come to the same conclusions with good teaching, self-reflection and some logical processing. If religion does that for him, that is great, but he is essentially advertising for religion here in a similar way. All positives, no negatives.

Informed choices, people. You can all make them as adults, because you have a lifetime of education, whether it's first-hand or otherwise. Children, however, do not.

Won't someone please think of the children!!

I don't think Haas gives two shits about gambling or booze.
Anything and everything that comes out of Haas camp since his ridiculous release request has been one form of PR control or another.

He tried the "dead brother" angle, the "im not doing it for the money" angle, he tried the "i just want to win a premiership" angle and now he is playing the religion card which a lot of people on here suspected would be used at some point alongside the race card.

This is just manipulation of the media to take the focus off his braindead management and their clumsy attempts at getting their hands on Haas money in a new deal.

There’s a very real chance that this is at least partially a ploy to agitate XXXX and Ladbrokes, and put broncos in a position where they either let him play without the branding and risk damaging relations with these major jersey sponsors or refuse and cop blowback from a religious oppression angle.

So I do get why some fans are being cynical. It’s a smart move by Haas’ camp. Wonder if he’ll have a change of heart at the roosters.

I can’t remember the exact moment Ladbrokes signed up but pretty simply the club should just be able to say that Haas was aware of the sponsors when he signed his most recent contract and there are surely clauses around club sponsors in his contract. Allow him to negotiate the removal of sponsors from his gear in the next contract.

SBW taped over those sponsors at the Roosters. They had no issue allowing it IIRC.

Well it's seems to be working lol. Look at what we are all talking about (gambling and alcohol advertising and its portrayal of Australian society).

We should go back to hating Hass.

The funniest thing about this stunt is it probably attracts 10x more the attention to the sponsors brand than just going with the flow ever would. I could not even tell you who our sponsors were until today. Bravo Payne, bravo . Gamblord thanks you

Hopefully this means haas...

Shuts the **** up!
