The Sydney Roosters are adamant they won’t be making a play for Brisbane and NSW Origin prop Payne Haas but it’s hard to see how they wouldn’t try and entertain it given what’s unfolded at the Broncos in the past 24 hours.

What is certain is the Roosters had some dialogue with the NSW Origin front row forward about six weeks ago but the word at the time was it was filed in the too hard basket given Haas is still signed with Brisbane until the end of 2024.

the problem is you'd have to prove the Roosters were enticing Haas to break his contract and not simply talking about 2025 on.

Uncle Nick isn't stupid enough to leave evidence lying around (and even if he was, the NRL aren't good enough to find it.)

All we can really do is stand our ground. For me it's either make him honour his contract, swap him for another player of equal ability or let him see his contract out away from the NRL side.

I think unless we can get a viable trade then it’s a no brainer that he stays in the side because even if he’s planning to leave he still needs to put his best foot forward to entice other buyers so provided he can at least no destabilise the playing group, it’s likely he’s still going to be a very productive and motivated competitor, even if he’s doing it for selfish reasons.
 
FYI this is what our skipper told Triple M this arvo:

“I’ve spoken to Payne and he’s assured us that he’s playing tomorrow, and look he’s a professional and I know he’ll do his job,” Reynolds told Triple M.

“But obviously it’s not the news you want to hear for someone who is an important part of your team and fingers crossed that things get solved and that he’s at the Broncos for a very long time to come.

“Payne is a professional athlete and there’s no doubt he’ll turn up ready to play.”

However, Reynolds also said it was a tough issue to comment on as players can quickly outgrow long-term deals.

“A lot of players sign on long-term deals, take (Selwyn) Cobbo for example looking at a multi-year deal.

“The rise of these kids these days, they go from being 20 years old fringe first graders to superstars of the game and they outgrow their contract pretty quick so it’s sort of a hard one to speak on.

“Payne is a great player who probably signed for a lot less than what he’s worth.

“That’s the risk you take with long-term contracts. The longest contract I ever signed was after we won the comp with Souths but I was well established then and basically the club knew what they were getting from me and what I could deliver for them.

“These kids coming into first grade, some have only played a handful of games and they’re signing five-year deals and getting paid on potential and they probably outgrow that sometimes.

“Maybe they might not live up to it but it’s a hard one because rugby league is such a brutal game and you can’t play forever and obviously you want to make the most out of your career and yeah it’s a tough discussion the NRL need to have.”

On the one hand it makes sense, but on the other hand you don't to show players how easy it is to get their way too. It's a bloody tough issue. Maybe they can arrange a good trade, I'd take Sam Walker.

He makes a very good point. Long contracts always turn out bad.

I think the club should have a strict 3 year maximum as a policy.

I kind of agree with Parker. If he is asking for a release mid season, no player is bigger than the club. I would be inclined to stand him down in the short term.

although I'm not sure if he realises that we upgraded Haas of our own accord, mid contract (without even getting an extension in return)

Payne can't really have it both ways. He was overpaid and got security young blokes dont usually get. He's still exceptionally well paid for a prop. I think as a club we are mad paying him over 750k anyway.

I’m inclined to agree but in that scenario the only loser is us. He gets paid the best part of a million bucks a year to sit on his ass for the next 18 months while we basically compete with a handicap in our salary cap.

I’d want to be very sure there was absolutely no way for him to be a productive and non-disruptive member of the squad before I pulled the trigger on that option.
