PLAYER Payne Haas

Haas in good ball

Payne Haas is a freak.

His footwork is outrageous for somebody his size. His acceleration off the mark and top speed don’t make sense. Up until this season, most of his best work has come in yardage to the tune of 160-190 running metres per game. However, it looks as though the big unit is looking to use his physical gifts more often close to the line in 2023.

In Round 6, we saw him pop up in a few more dangerous spots.

He first picked Zac Woolford out in the line and looked to hit and spin his way through the smaller hooker. Knowing that he’s unlikely to make a strong enough tackle to stop Haas from crashing over, Woolford takes his only option and intercepts the pass.

Haas and Cory Paix didn’t get it right this time, but as defence’s spread on the line to tackle the threat of the Broncos out wide, look for these two to try this one on again soon.

I’ve highlighted the work of Haas and Patrick Carrigan further up the field already. Linking up closer to the line on this one, Carrigan almost sends Haas over it after digging into the line and isolating his big prop onto a halfback.

Highlights against the tigers mean zilch

He's easily the best prop in the game, and if he keeps it up, he'll be the greatest prop of all time.

He has so many string to his bow, and I'm glad we're finally starting to see them.

He's a freak of nature. Absolutely humongous, but also quite agile for a human of his size. ****, I wouldn't want to tackle him.

I just wish when we were attacking the opposition line he would get deeper and hit the ball at full speed. He would be unstoppable.

be nice if we got some sort of announcement this week
Agree.
I dont want to hear another damn journo saying he is "close" to inking a new deal, I want to hear he has signed a new deal.
I am also still worried about the Roosters, because anything we offer Haas the Rorters can match and add a brown paper bag from uncle Nick on top of it.

The negative press the NRL would get from Haas turning down the highest contract ever offered to a Bronco to go to the Rosters for less money would be a PR nightmare for the NRL and I'm hoping that is enough to keep those grubby chooks hands off our bloke.

Makes you think that up until now, he has been developed as safely as possible. Don't even risk offloads, just tuck the ball under and go for it. Build up the motor and game awareness. Now that he has the experience under his belt, they've now gone "okay, let's work on offloads, and potential ball-playing before, at, and past the line". And the big unit has just gone "okay, coach", and gone to another level. Dare I say, while most of us were going "he's not worth that money as he doesn't have an offload and doesn't get to his front", those that work with him knew it was all there, they were just bringing him along slowly.

He's been one of the best players in the game this year. We're literally winning games on the back of his performances.

If that's not worth $1 million under the new cap at the very least, I don't know what is.

Agreed, he is proving to be a match winner, which as a prop, that is amazing. I think @Kimlo mentioned, he hasn't missed a tackle yet this year or something ridiculous like that. He is tracking to be the best middle in the history of the game.

Cant deny how good he is.
Still salty about him asking for a release, but he seems to be far more focused this season and his interview after the game made me like him a lot more.

Would love to win a premiership with him in the side.

That was @Unbreakable I think.
