Player Movements & Rumours 2010

I'm expecting a big season from Sims. He should snare a City/Country jersey for sure, even though that isn't much of an achievement. He won't be asking for big bucks and won't be highly sort after by other clubs (yet) so I think we should just extend his contract now. We can't afford to lose another forward, especially a prop, unless Henjak has a few replacements in mind...

surely the Broncos will go on a spending spree next offseason, there must be money there to buy players.

Or Brisbane will spend it all on retaining the players who come thru this year and blow us all away :P

I don't know where this fanbase came from who are all about buying players. Until a couple of years ago, the Broncos wern't about that.

We don't need to buy players. We need to create players.

Lockyer
Wallace
Hodges
Folau
Thaiday
Parker

Huge chunk of cap right there. Can't see where this mountain of cash is coming from.

And as Nashy and draggx said, let's see what our youngsters do this year. Could be superstars in the making!

Not to mention Marsh is taking up a fair chunk.

250K if reports are to be believed.

THEY missed out on Daniel Mortimer but the Bulldogs are preparing to salvage their search for a long-term half by turning their attention to Brisbane youngster Ben Hunt and Parramatta's Kris Keating.

Bulldogs officials, however, have ruled out reigniting their pursuit of North Queensland and Australian halfback Johnathan Thurston, who is weighing up whether to re-sign with the Cowboys or pursue rugby union opportunities overseas.

While coach Kevin Moore declined to divulge potential targets in the wake of Mortimer's decision to remain with the Eels, Hunt has emerged as a candidate given he is off-contract with the Broncos.

Interesting...

I bet Ben Barba is feeling good at the moment.

Even if we have the money, there needs to be players that are worth buying and at this stage I don't think there are going to be too many players that we might need that are going to be available.

And like Nashy and Coxy, my preference is to spend money on retention and development first and foremost.

The reports about the Dogs chasing Ben Hunt really concern me. I am a fan of Hunt and think losing him would be a massive blow to our future. But it is a very real danger if Henjak doesn't give him proper opportunities this year.

The "Bred, Not Bought" Canterbury Broncos at it again hey?

I agree with Flutterby. Given what's happened to the makeup of the squad in recent seasons, now's not the time to let a decent young halfback slip. Be interesting to see how keen the Doggies really are.

Yep, and you just know what's going to happen...Broncos let Hunt go, thinking Smith will sign a long term deal...meanwhile Smith signs a deal with someone else...then Locky has another bad knee injury and decides to retire...and suddenly the Broncos go from 4 quality halves to 1.

It was a long term deal along those lines wasn't it though? He's obviously not worth that now but I think the perception at the time was that he was

I think (and anyone can correct me if I'm wrong) that he's in the last year of a 3 year deal

Yeah that's right. He was playing for parra before with riddel and going pretty well, the Broncos were in need of a hooker at the time, signed up for 3 years. He won't be here next year, hopefully anyway.

marsh is on around that.... think he has retired or is going to soon...

Coxy I think this is strange, you are correct that Smith has not signed for the Broncos, but with a feeder squad, that doesn't mean he has any intentions of moving on. Hunt may well be like so many other young players (Taylor, Moon, Kemp, Emmett, McGuire, Tate, Boyd, Stagg etc... that would move for money (add to that Sailor, Thorn, Hodges, Lote, Petreo, Hammant, Ennis and so on) sure a few of them came back, but most of them were not pushed out. Hunt could just as easily do the same thing, where would your poster boy be then? Has anyone here spoken to him? Has he said that he would take $100 or so less to stay with the Broncos then move? Is he a better half then Smith? Cream rises to the top, if he was better than the half option we have now he would be in the squad.

I have met young Hunt a few times and I do not believe he would move on for money, but rather for lack of opportunity. I am also of the opinion that he will be a better half than Smith and will prove to be out best post-Locky option - if he is given the opportunity.
