Agree dman. I think the AFL "raid" on rugby league is going to pause here - at least until they see how K and Issy go. If one or both of them prove to be an outstanding success on-field for AFL, then we will defintely see a full blown attack IMO - however if neither sets the world on fire on-field then I think they will write it off as a good promotional experiement.

The thing is though future players won't be getting $1 million a year offers. Remember the playing components of both Hunt and Folau's contracts are small, and ultimately that's what the players would get offered, with some additional inducement. I would think it lucky if future offers push $500K.

Inglis was linked to Essendon last year though, I doubt they would offer GI a big contract though.

Of course not. They have a salary cap. He's never played AFL. It'd be a dumb investment.

The only way I can see the AFL making regular raids on League players would be if the AFL made it salary cap exempt. Even then it'd only favour the AFL clubs with cash, and there's a few that are struggling.

Exactly, I'd be furious if the Broncos blew half a mil of the salary cap on an AFL player.

Lockyer said an Inglis-Justin Hodges centre pairing had ‘‘a nice ring to it’’. ‘‘We’ve lost Israel, there’s a bit of money in the cap,’’ he said. ‘‘The Inglis rumour probably doesn’t sound too silly. It’s going to be pretty hard to get one of those [Storm] guys but there’s room for it now. The positive in this is that the Broncos knew it was potentially coming. They know now that they’ve got a bit more time to go and find a replacement.’’

IMO, to me that looks like Lockyer knows some talk has already happened between Broncos and Inglis in some capacity.
Man Inglis would be the best signing we've made in a very long time.

If Hoffman keeps playing well they'll stick Inglis at centre, but damn the thought of Inglis at fullback is awesome.

You fail to see why AFL have recruited Izzy and KHUNT. Only one club in the NRL has any reason to sign an AFL player and that is Melbourne...

I'd add a second. Brisbane. We've lost 5 high profile players to other sports in the last decade (Thorn, Sailor, Tuqiri, Hunt, Folau) so it'd be a good revenge story.

But Coxy is speaking about buying a player while the full salary cap is in place, the two new clubs could do it because they had no relaxed salary cap restrictions.
I really doubt the NRL would relax salary cap restrictions on anything, they're very strict with it and rightly so.

If we had to lose Hannant and say Gillet just to get an AFL player I would be filthy, same with any other club unless the NRL exempted the AFL player from the cap.

Yeah fair call although I don't believe the Broncos would bother, IMO it would be tougher to convert to the NRL than convert to the AFL.

Beads is saying the point of signing KHunt and War Mongering Jewish State Folau was as publicity stunt in those league-loving areas where they're trying to establish the new clubs.

Salary cap doesn't really come into it. It's not even about their playing ability. It's 100% a publicity stunt. If the players turn out to be any good that'll just be a bonus.

Unless the NRL were trying to establish a new club in an AFL heart land (WA or SA...or another in Vic) there'd be no point in signing one.

Only the Storm would have any reason to of the current clubs.

Re: the signing of Inglis. Do we all forget the incandecsent rage around here when we signed Folau, arguably of equal value as Inglis to a club (48 tries in 48 games for the Broncos I believe is the stat). The huge price tag necessitating the release of most of our forwards etc etc...? How is it different this time around with Inglis?

Personally I think we have a very good group of raw young outside backs that we should concentrate on first, and use any spare cash in the cap to bolster the forwards.

Difference is the cap is going up $300K next year anyway.

Combine that with the $400K or so we save by not having to retain Folau and there's every reason we can buy "Inglis" and still have money left to upgrade our youngsters as they deserve.

We also has KHUNT at the time which added more strike power to our team. WIth Izzy gone and only reall Hodges being the guy who can bust a game open in our backs I think signing Inglis would be very important to the Broncos..

it wont, the grant will increase by $200k but the cap will only increase by $100k.

[quote="Bucking Beads":3olxqp2m]Looks like Inglis is being looked at by the AFL too. I saw him kicking a Sherrin today,

Was it a joke or a serious thing???? I fuking hope he was mucking around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was kicking them long and straight from 50m's out on Carltons practice ground... [icon_thumbs_do[/quote:3olxqp2m]
That is the club that I would least like to hear of him kicking the sherrin on. You guys do realise that Carlton is chasing a big power full forward. If Inglis went to AFL he would probally play full forward  :|
