On Hunt's kicking game, I think McCullough and Milford need to kick more to take some pressure off him and be a bit more unpredictable..

Every time it goes to Hunt and the opposition knows it so they just rush him and he isn't able to get good kicks away. Half the time he gets the ball, he is swamped by defenders. He isn't a Thurston or Cronk, he can't put in good kicks under pressure yet.

It's difficult to judge too many individual performances, or call for mass changes off a game like that. Opposition was on, our attack not gelling at all, way too many errors and penalties, pretty poor kicking game etc. Most of the backline were just quiet, well covered and couldn't get into the game. Though Hunt tried very hard especially in cover defence.

gavet didn't have a happy debut, Dodds I thought looked quite solid, gillet looked sharp, maranta is proving to be a smart reliable player, if not a little safe and hesitant to back his speed. Glenn has stepped up, Thaiday should play 20mins as an impact forward, Kahu needs time if not improved move maranta back there or five Eden a shot.

The biggest issue for me is Bennett's use of the bench. In what universe does it make sense to bring off your hooker and play our best forward at hooker, to play a rookie centre at second row?

It's not that hard to use your bench... Either play McC for 80 and use four forwards (Gillette, Glenn, Oates are versatile enough to provide injury cover), or if you want to give McC a break, put an explosive specialist hooker on for 15 mins ala Parcell...

No need to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

We were shit, and we're deservedly smoked by a very slick Souths outfit.

Some of the boys need to have a good hard look in the mirror. Gavet, Thaiday, Whitchurch, Reed.

Despite being pasted, I thought Moose, Blair, Green and Gillett gave it their all. Matt in particular went well off the bench. Of all the off season surgery list, he was the only one who looked up to it. Copley and Reed were comparatively far off the pace.

Hunt, Milford and Hodges need to get more involved. Kicking duties need to be shared, fifth tackle options need variety. Cozza needs kicking practice. Two dead off kick offs isn't professional standard.

Macca was poor, but why the **** does he have to bust a gut making 55 tackles? If others can hit and stick, he'd be a lot more effective, rather than tackling himself to a standstill.

Next week, Thaiday to bench, Gillett to 12. Gavet likely suspended, bring in Garbutt. Dodds unremarkable but penalty aside, didn't do too much wrong. Give him another shot, hopefully Oates isn't too far off a return, and or Ofahengaue to debut. Whitchurch out for Nikorima or Vidot.

25 more rounds to go, plenty of improvement left in them. Bummer of a result but the only way is up.

Condolences to those attending live. That would have been much harder to take.

Notes to take from that

- Very disappointing way to start the season. Made no meters, bombed chances to score which came back to bite us, trailed the whole game and were just over powered and outplayed. Souths had 60% of possession and 72% of territory and the score indicated that.

- Milford was poor and never got involved in the game at all. Gould made a very good point in commentary about whether he has the maturity to take over at such a young age and lead the team around. When Lockyer took over the five-eighth position he had played around 200 first grade games and was a permanent member of Australian and Queensland teams and had plenty of experience whilst Milford has a lot of talent but not much football under his belt.

- James Gavet can turn out to be a very good purchase for us. Despite his 2 fumbles and shoulder charge he looked enthusiastic and had some very good carries which were probably the best by any of our forwards.

- Vidot should've been there no doubt. If he was playing he would've come in and given the forwards a rest and would've made some meters through the middle.

- The only players on our side who impressed me where Hunt, Gillett and Gavet.

It's only the start of the season and coming up against Souths in form like this is going to be a major challenge for any team and they showed that tonight, they would've beaten many other teams by a margin like this. Give the team patience and time to gel and we can get better.

Wow. Just, wow.

Negatives:
Milford, fok was he even out on the field?
Hunt, as above. Stupid bombs always on the 5th tackle and not much else.
Reed, his a ranga and thats all his has going for him.
Whitchurch, what a neville nobody, his useless as me on the field.
Copley, did nothing all nite.

Positives:
I absolutely cleaned up on the sport tab with the Bunnies to win by at least 30 points prediction. $$$$ ¦)
Maranta, tried hard all night and unlucky not to score.

Leave Maranta on the wing thanks.
Eden is playing No 5 for Wynnum this weekend. Be interesting to see how he goes.
Sounds like Wayne is going to keep Kahu at fullback. He might be alright at other things but cant catch a highball to save himself. He needs to spend the entire week catching highballs with Moose running straight at him.
Whitchurch needs to be a definite out. Learn to hold the ball in the ISC thanks. (if he gets selected).
Id like to see Garbutt,Joe and Oates get a run soon.

Biggest problem with Milford was he didnt look to run the ball at all. I get that our forwards were shit, but a pathetic forward performance never stopped him from getting the ball and running at the Raiders. I don't know if it was tiredness from front line defence or the responsibilities he felt as a five eight but it's criminal that he never looked to take on the line.

he definitely just shovelled the ball on a bit too much.

anyway. i'd have a few changes but i'd stick with the core of the side at this point. its only one game and i've calmed down haha

Ari, to me, it looks almost like Milf is a bit overawed playing for Broncos or something. At the raiders, his was the big man on campus, where as here he seems very unsure of hisself. I know that BHQ subscriber ‘Anonymous Person‘ can be very irritating ,but, i think he has a good point in that what the fok is milf doing at 5/8 when fullback suits hes game better! Preety concerning really.

Because the audience is transient and the club fails to rally the NRL to do things to build a sustainable fan base and include families.

Yes thaiday had an absolute shocker, but to those saying how he drops straight away in a tackle. What he's trying to do is surrender instantly and get a quick play the ball before the defence has time to get back in line and run up. It's a really good move when done right, except he fucked it up with a slow play the ball almost every time. Watch him at origin time though and he drops and plays it instantly putting us on the front foot straight away

What the ***** with the negativity towards other bhq'ers right after a loss ? It's almost like you have an agenda against those who like Bennett. Talk about the game instead of taking digs

I mean, what even is baiting, right?

You're too kind, Souths fans are a fucking feral bunch at the best of times.

Last time I went to a game against them a bunch of em got kicked out for drinking spirits straight out of the bottle.

I would have seen maybe 5 Souths jerseys from before 2014 tonight. Bunch of bandwagoners. There's no way their cenrelink payments are buying new jerseys every year.

Gavet runs hard. Haven't seen that in a few years at the Bronx
Haha stop it. He hops, skips and jumps before every hit up. Then he walks into the defensive line.

How did Whitchurch get the nod ahead of joey O? What this team badly needs after years of mediocrity is some mongrel and aggression

Joe played well this afternoon. Looks like a monster and runs hard. Also I think his family were sitting behind us and I'm in love with one of them now.

what the **** is that horse doing in full gallop on a shifty surface like Suncorp ?!?

Buck freaked out because of the flames going off. Also in love with the girl who rides Buck. Anyone have any contacts so I can ask if she's ok? I know CPR and stuff.

Souths blatantly taking players off the ball on kicks. Not a word from the commentators.

Numerous times and it was always so obvious. But I guess NRL fans need to get used to the Rabbitohs getting away with everything again this year.

Er, why are we doing the national anthem? Bit odd.

It's always done before the season opener.

Blair looks good early. Typical gumby penalty from Thaiday for a lazy flop.

Souths did this all night with no consequences. At least we got our catch up penalties in the last 3-5 minutes of both halves.
