POST GAME Post Game Discussion - Round 1 - South Sydney

So what did everyone think about Parker being subbed ( and then playing hooker), McCullough being subbed, and running a bench back as a utility? Bennetts use of the bench and player selections in that one game were worse than anything griffin ever did IMO. Parker is an 80 minute player, yet he was subbed and then made to play hooker!?

Reynolds is just a damn fine halfback. I suggested we throw the chequebook at him last year when souths told him he was free to look elsewhere, but was met on here with "hes peter Wallace with a better forward pack" type reactions lol.

Another day, another agenda suiting fabricated quote.

That's exactly what he is, lol.

Reynolds can kick better, but that doesn't make him a "damm fine halfback".

Having a great pack makes things pretty easy for him, but he is in every other aspect than kicking, nothing more than average. I stand by that statement!

But if we could somehow give Hunt the kicking game of Reynolds, we would have a damn fine halfback... I'd go as far as saying an elite halfback.

To be brutally honest I'm not exactly in panic mode yet after that performance tonight. Yes we have work to do but it takes time to work out our combos and we need to let our halves gel. It was never going to take 1 week for it all to happen. What would worry me is if we dish up the same performance in three months time. Plenty of work to do but its all fixable. Our attack actually wasn't that bad when we actually got down inside their 10 and we looked threatening on a couple of occasions. Gavet just needs to concentrate on hitting the ball up and holding it. Whitchurch is god awful (nikorama should be in the side next week). Our marker defence needs a bit of work. Luke had a field day last night with so much space given. And Reed most certainly has to be on notice. He was pretty average last night. As for Kahu, yeah he is a stop gap fullback so don't be too surprised he put down that Reynolds bomb

Completely agree with the Parker stuff up and Whitchurch selection. That Bennett didn't own it as a mistake and instead took a shot at Thaiday for marginal penalties in the conference pisses me off.

It's

Reynolds... Hunt does more with less. But God we'd kill for a steady hand with a good boot at the moment.

AP, despite what others think of you, I think you are insightful thorn in the side of popular BHQ opinion and often on the money. Just ease up on the "I told you so's" because (a) no one remembers what you said in the past and (b) no one gives a shit or is going to laud you for "being right".

The game was an anamoly - extraordinary conditions, tough turnaround after long pre-season etc, playing the best team in the competition who won't lose many this year.

We were competitive, but lack the class or winning culture that Souths have. Souths scored off our mistakes. That's why they're the best.

I wish we were playing again tomorrow. Round 2 cannot come quick enough for redemption.

Gavet was crap with errors but came out firing in the second half and did some good things to redeem himself.

Whitchurch just made mistakes and has nothing. He should do himself a favour and retire. Deadset.

Yes thaiday had an absolute shocker, but to those saying how he drops straight away in a tackle. What he's trying to do is surrender instantly and get a quick play the ball before the defence has time to get back in line and run up. It's a really good move when done right, except he fucked it up with a slow play the ball almost every time. Watch him at origin time though and he drops and plays it instantly putting us on the front foot straight away

Its not a good move at all anymore. It was only effective with the Tigers in 05, before wrestling. Now its ineffective, plain lazy and worthless.

I would rather have the Thaiday that ran hard, broke tackles, made line breaks and offloaded the ball rather than a Thaiday that drops to the ground straight away in an effort to get a quick play the ball, which he rarely does anymore because he doesn't get up quick enough.

With respect, your `I told you so' I am shit hot posts are getting really old.

If Souths didn't hold a 20 point lead, I doubt you'd see Whitchurch out on the field or Macca subbed.

It was just about giving the guy a go and it didn't work out.

Also, some pretty elementary errors killed us last night. No team can afford to kick the ball out on the full from the kick off let alone do it twice against the reigning premiers

EDIT: Off-topic

My take, Souths are where we were at in the 90's, basically just a powerhouse side with strike all over the park. Smart young coach who has his side buying into his plan and applying it clinically. If we ever wanted confirmation of how much we have slipped and how much work we have in front of us, last night is exhibit A. It is going to take time and possibly more than just this season to fix the issues in my view.

I should add kudos to Maguire and Souths, they played well and built pressure all night. It is a bit scary how well they are playing at the start of the season. Perhaps burn out may be a concern later in the season.

This!! One of the most annoying things to see is this error. And seriously, twice. I mean how the fok can it be so difficult to just not kick the ball so God damn hard!

Had enough of people discussing posters and not the game itself.

If a poster offends you either PM them to hash it out or report their post and we'll deal with it.

We're not putting up with this for 26+ weeks.
