POST GAME Post Game Discussion - Round 1 - South Sydney

Yes thaiday had an absolute shocker, but to those saying how he drops straight away in a tackle. What he's trying to do is surrender instantly and get a quick play the ball before the defence has time to get back in line and run up. It's a really good move when done right, except he ****ed it up with a slow play the ball almost every time. Watch him at origin time though and he drops and plays it instantly putting us on the front foot straight away

You said the magic word yourself - surrender.

When the ball carrier surrenders the defenders get to work them over more and as such you get a slower play the ball. This is the "dominant" and "surrender" that you hear the referees call. You get quick play the balls by hitting and going over the top of the defender so you have momentum to hop up and quickly play the ball. Hit and drop does the complete opposite, and Thaiday hasn't learned this is 8+ years of doing it. I hate to harp on about it but I've literally been saying he does this on here for 5+ years and have been calling for him to be moved along.

God that was infuriating to watch, I don't care who you're playing, the reigning premiers or not you don't lose by 30 at home. It was pathetic, boys couldn't even get it done for Corey and his 300. And even if we were to lose, at least if it was closer we could take some positives. I struggle to take any positives from that other than it is Rd1.

Souths are incredible, but my god their fans are annoying as ****, this year they have taken it to a new level. The bandwagoners were out in full force tonight and I expect it to continue all year.

Onto next week quickly so we can forget about this week.

its definitely weird at suncorp. as rhys said people look at you funny when you make a bit of noise. these two blokes beside/behind us tonight were sitting there chatting about their week not even watching the game. they were literally facing away from the field.

i dont know how you fix it.

2nd team, same time, different place. Give the neutrals somewhere else to go. However Suncorp's proximity to the city makes it the easier option. But that's why the away support is always so loud. They're all in one bay. Any 'active' members are dispersed amongst the other 20-30k there. And no the 'Fortress' bay does not count. It never will

After braving the hottest and most humid night I can remember at Suncorp, as well as that absolute garbage that we got served, I'm surprised I'm this calm. Don't count on me to enter the Bennett discussion though... I'm not going to judge anything based on 1 game, even if I clearly disagree with some of his selections.

I just watched Wayne's presser and it was refreshing to see him tell it like it was, especially about Thaiday and the ruck wrestle.
You can see this is a Maguire coached team, in the way they totally dominated the ruck and play the ball speed from both sides, which greatly helped Luke tear us apart and Macca having a crappy game. We dearly missed Vidot's hit-ups tonight, as most of our runs ended up with Souths driving our player back...

That really was the story of the night, our ruck speed was absolute crap, our ruck defense slowly but surely wore off, the penalties and unforced errors gave Souffs all the possession and time in the world to put us to the sword, and they did. Kuddos to Maguire, although I will never like the Bellyache grubby style he has them play. They're essentially the new Storm, and while it's very effective, I loathe the way they niggle, push the boundaries, pressure the ball catcher, etc... in that particular aspect, Keary got away with at least 3 times deliberately taking a player out, and only got punished once. Refs need to police that stuff better!

On an individual basis, not many players deserve wraps, but not that many deserve a bashing either. Anyway, here goes nothing...

Kahu - I got a lot of time for that kid, as I know what he's capable of. Tonight, he didn't even get close to it, although besides that sitter he dropped, I don't think he was too bad. He has a limited time frame to earn a spot in the team, and being able to keep it, regardless of Boyd's return, he'll need to improve heaps for that to happen.

Reed - I'd say Vidot should get his spot back.

Copley - He's a centre. Play him there!

Hodgo - Although most of the promising attacking moments came from his hands, he didn't deliver as much as I was hoping. Still the best player in the 3/4's by far.

Maranta - Didn't shame himself, and should keep the winger spot ahead of Reed imo. Safe in defense, he just lacks in attack and will never be a finisher.

Milford - Behind a well beaten pack, never got a chance to do much of anything. Needs time to gel with his partner. Was looking for opportunities all night, but they never really came.

Hunt - Didn't stop trying all night, but succumbed under the pressure of trying to make something happen. Kicking twice out on the full... come on!

McGuire - Definitely in the top 2 tonight for us. Unrelenting, unforgiving, fought like possessed a losing battle.

McCullough - Got a clinic from Luke, but like the halves, was hopelessly outgunned behind a beaten pack. Most embarrassing was seeing Parker teach him a thing or two about fast service!

Blair - Was one of the most vocal people against his recruitment, but he was definitely one of the few forwards capable of holding their head high tonight.

Glenn - Tried hard, but was inconsequential. Like most others, didn't give up either... just lacked something and kept being pushed back.

Thaiday - I used to go to bat for this guy, but his attitude as a senior player has to change. He single handedly gave Souffs control of the game, and took it away from us when we were still evening the stakes. Needs to be dropped to the bench at the very least...

Parker - Not the player we're used to. No offloads, no slanted runs, less work and minutes than usual... maybe the occasion got to him. Still did a half decent job in a spot he should have never been!

Dodds - Clearly a man on a mission from a defensive perspective. Hit a few Souths runners hard, and that was good to see... still unable to cart the ball forward with any grunt though.

Gavet - Tried too hard, made too many mistakes, but is a player we need in a doo gooders team. Hopefully Garbutt can carry the torch if James gets suspended.

Gillett - The best a man can get. Only guy who systematically got meters with his go footwork and go forward. Troubled Souffs otherwise fairly easy job against our runners. Deserved his try, even if the team as a whole didn't. MOTM for mine (and yes, I know I am biased)

Whitchurch - I feel for the kid, but he was so clearly out of his depth, it's not funny... surely he won't be back next week?

TLDR: Gillett and Moose are awesome, Thaiday, Reed and Whitchurch suck, our ruck is still a disgrace in all facets.

I would have seen maybe 5 Souths jerseys from before 2014 tonight. Bunch of bandwagoners. There's no way their cenrelink payments are buying new jerseys every year.

Fucking oath. I had a distant "mate" who knows shit all about league, yet mid 2014 claimed he's always been a rabbitohs fan.
I then doubted his knowledge of NRL in general and asked him a few basic questions, seeing as he was such a proud NSW supporter I asked who the captain was. Billy Slater was his answer. No joke. He even thought the jersey number of a fullback was 13 for ***** sake.

Rabbitohs fans are either bandwagoners or people who know nothing about the sport imo

Suncorp's PC nannies also doesn't help... we need a few thousand tiffosi from Southern Europe or South America to get the rest of the public going!

Certainly not the outcome I was hoping for but if I had to wager Broncos win vs Souths by 30+ that would be a close call before the game. Souths were just absolutely awesome, the flat passes that stuck just kill a sliding defense. They just seem to play tough and strong, even the small guys don't go down easy.

I haven't lost any ambition for this season after that, it's round 1, new 5/8, new coach, years of shit coaching to overcome blah blah blah. Some of the things I found interesting:

Souths played with a lot more aggression even during being tackled. Hands in faces, pushing the marker. All seemed a bit like pushing the boundaries. Maybe that's what a team that really wants to win and knows how to can do.

Thaiday walking on the field after half time had a camera in his face and didn't do 'squid hands' or any cheeky grins. His face was pretty solemn too. Says to me the coach is getting the message through, I know his first half was shit but he came around a bit 2nd half. Still shit overall.

Kicking out on the full from a restart has become a Broncos trademark. THIS HAS TO FUCKING GO!!!

On a side note(s) isn't it odd there's power outages at Lockyer's 300th in Newcastle from lightning and now an outage on Cozza's 300th from ... not paying the bill?

Gillett leaked at least three tries.... How dare you say to start him wtf

I buy 2-3 jerseys every year, I like getting the alternative ones. The Return to Redfern jersey is going to get a bit of wear this year. Oh and no centre link payments here.

It looked like Anthony Griffin was coaching them last night. Just terrible. I'd expect Oates to be in first grade next week. Gavet made good runs but dropped the ball. Thaiday worked hard but gave away penalties every chance he got. Milford looked over awed by the occasion. It'l be interesting to see how they bounce back. Parker filling in at hooker while McCullough went off was my highlight for the evening.

Hope you're being sarcastic about Parker. That was a terrible coaching decision, so that Whitchurch could effectively play lock.

Game was fucked. I havent sweated that much, even at the cricket in January. A bit of an anamoly hopefully but WB needs to get the squad.

South's weren't that good. They were very beatable and when we got moving there were points on offer. Then Whitchurch or Gavet dropped the ball and all of a sudden game's over

Adam Reynolds might be the best goal kicker of all time. He didn't even look capable of missing. It was a real joy to watch him slot it from both sidelines, 40m out, and 51m out. Absolutely incredible.

We need a goal kicker. Corey isn't up to it and shouldn't be expected to do it.
