NRL Pre-season Challenge 2: COWBOYS - Feb 18, 7:55pm (Sunshine Coast)

Broadcast on Fox/Kayo only.

I'm getting worried about how much trial time this Josh Rogers is getting so far...

I haven't been all that impressed with him so far, but is he the next cab off the rank after Madden in the season proper??

Looks like he's 26 and joined from Burleigh... What's his story from someone in the know?? Is he our Gamble replacement??
He is the only cab off the rank after Madden.

26 from Perth. Has been at Burleigh for a little while and has developed into the best 6 in the q-cup. Definitely not a bad development option but when you got 3 halves in the squad (plus Billy but he shouldn’t be playing halves if he is the 9) it can become an issue.

Hence the worry.

I said the other day that I think Sailor should get the top 30 spot so we have some coverage in the halves more than anything... we legitimately have no one else other than Reyno, Mam and Madden.

This is where having 3 hookers on the books and possibly a 4th needed starts to erode away the depth.

We're also stacked for outside backs so possibly someone gets moved on

The roster looks unbalanced at the moment compared to last year where I thought our depth was excellent

Jock madden is playing half. It will be interesting how he and mann go as a halves pairing.
The cows should be favourites, but id love to see madden have a good showing.
Beyond the halves its a fairly even contest, and i think the cows could be caught with their pants down if they are off the boil early and take it easy

It will hopefully be a good chance to see what Madden's credentials are as a halfback.... I'll be hoping to see a nice long kicking game from him and not a Bhunt bomb to the corner special over and over again.

Completely agree I was saying the same thing a bit earlier but I think the issue is the Bronx have so much quality in the halves amongst these 3 that they only need injury cover in there depth not poor form options. So probably struggle to warrant needing to sign a 4th in the squad of a similar elk to Rogers when they can play Walters, Walsh or Paix or get an exemption to play Rogers. But in saying that I want Tristan to get signed to top 30 and he can cover fullback and 6 at a high standard more so the fullback position but provides the extra half cover if need be.

Walters can do a job there and whilst he struggled late in the season, early on he looked quite good.
I think both him and paix find the length of season taxing playing in the dummy half role as they do. Neither have the wisdom to pace themselves to last and they tend to go at the role like a bull at a gate, then either dissappear (paix) or quickly fail at basic skills (walters).
That said, i think sailor is too good a player to pass up and i would have had him, not cobbo at fullback this weekend. To me he looks far more the finished product there whilst cobbo looked a little lost when he last went there.
I suppose training there in the off season would have helped but i've got the feeling cobbo will need another year to settle within the squad.
A bit like niu last year, he will probably look spectacular in attack but the defence will look a lot more vulnerable and he might get caught out on some kicks behind the line.

Rogers reminds me a lot of Gamble - bigger body, limited but won’t die wondering.

If you move Walters you're then relying on Mozer to play 40mins at hooker... so I don't necessarily think that would be an option, unless Mozer comes along quickly in ISC this year

Western Australia junior who came through the Gold Coast system. Has been plugging away at Burleigh for years but had a break-out season last year and was the best five-eighth in the competition.

I thought he had some nice moments against the Seagulls. He directed traffic well down that left-side and the kick he put on for Leota was inch perfect.

He'll play a similar role in the squad as Gamble, but he's a different style of player. Tyson was play flat, physical and always in the thick of it. Rogers is more I'll look to play wide before cutting back in with a step and we'll play from there. Can play to a structure and do his part but not as gritty as Gamble.

In other words, think of him more as an Albert Kelly replacement.

This trial might get ugly unless Kev has done alot of work over the break. We are missing our two best spine players and the other two are rookies/shit.

Last season cows were known for their defensive line speed and ability to get over the advantage line. If we can't match that to some degree it's gonna get ugly. If we can and Madden has a good game it might be competitive.

Gun post. Would read again.
I am glad you enjoyed my post mate 😀.

I don’t know what happened but whatever I had in there vanished except for the ‘.’
Is there a Delete option for a post? I don’t find one.

I don't know how to take the Reyno 'injury'.
I think Walsh not playing is the real reason that they are resting/not taking a risk on Reyno, whilst also allowing Madden to put his case forward.
He already has the reps with Mam, Walters & Paix. Cobbo at FB doesn't mean a whole lot, but I am sure the club would have liked to see Reyno and Walsh play at least a trial together prior to the season proper.

Well potentially our two best playmakers already likely out / unfit round 1. That sucks.

Pretty keen to see Madden tbh. I don't remember a whole lot of him, but I remember taking note of him a few times.

Reynolds:

“I’m good to go. I’ve got some nerve pain in my back but there’s no damage. The pre-season has gone well and my body is feeling fine overall. I won’t require any treatment to play in round 1.”

Capewell:

“He is getting a bit old. ’Reyno’ seemed to train OK, but he must have pulled up a bit stiff the next morning. I don’t think it’s a concern. He is a pretty experienced player and as good as it would be to have him there, he is hardly going to miss much of the season hopefully.”
“Jock has taken to the role really well since he got here. He has learnt from Reyno and I am excited to be playing with him. Jock is a real livewire, he is fast-footed and he controls his edge really well at training. I’m excited to see how he goes.”
