Pre-season

Seriously though, Mchunt, you'd probably do well in this role actually...

Just listened to an interview with Coates on "Drive with Joel and Fletch". A few interesting things to note;

Who is the player training the house down? - Tesi Niu is training the house down at centre and is transitioning to right centre well.

Who is going to be fullback? - A fair few players have been switching in and out of fullback, but Isaako and Walsh have been the dominant players there. Coates has played a bit of juniors with Walsh and rates him as a really good fullback who plays eyes up footy, is really quick off the mark, is quick to adjust to things and has made a good impact in the first grade squad.

Who do you expect to be on the shortlist for captain? - Macca, Glenn, Carrigan, Milf are most likely in his opinion.

Best case scenario is Macca ***** off to Merge and Glenn retains the tentative captaincy (just because we have no better options. Carrigan isn't ready IMO and Milford is on the outer.)

I'd feel for Isaako given his horrible year last year but imagine if Walsh was training the house down so much he jumped up to number 1 in the pecking order for...number 1.

What are we doing with Brodie Croft this year?

Apparently Kayo has a trial of the Sharks and Dragons on this afternoon.

Walters has confirmed TPJ's return for the trial against Wynnum-Manly at Kitchener Park next Friday night:

“Some of our bigger men who didn’t play a lot of football last year like Matt Lodge and Tevita Pangai will play next week. (Pangai) will be in the middle somewhere, I don’t know what number he will have on his back. The players have been really good with everything we’ve introduced to them this year. They’re taking it all on board. I can see the gradual improvement from when we first came together in November to now. There’s been some really positive signs."

“They need to now play some football and we’ll get that next week against Wynnum then the following weekend in our major trial against the Cowboys (at Redcliffe). Trials in recent years haven’t been so important, but this year given the one (major) trial the players will only get one opportunity to get themselves fit for round one.”

Albert Kelly is back at Red Hill, after being sent to purgatory for being a slug:

“He’s piled on a few kilos so we had to send him back to Souths (Logan) to do some more running. But with five-eighth Anthony Milford (broken hand) in danger of missing Round 1, Walters said he wanted scrumbase options to partner halfback Tom Dearden. He’s got great experience and with the loss of Anthony Milford we need another half at training. I’ve got to say he’s been very impressive with what he’s doing. He’s quite an experienced player. He had a lovely career at the Titans and in England."

“He’s welcome back and lost a bit of weight as well which is great. He’s in good nick. He had a hamstring problem so we felt it was best he went away and fixed that. He did that over the Christmas period. He certainly is (in the mix for round one). Because of the season the Broncos had last year, they are all fighting for positions. There’s plenty of competition in the group. At training you can see the competitiveness around the players. We’ve been enjoying that. We’ve got trials in the next couple of weeks which are very important for a lot of players to see who will take the field against Parramatta in round one.”

Broncos physiotherapist Luke Anning hopes Anthony Milford will make the opening round:

“Anthony had surgery last Thursday and is progressing really well considering it’s only a week old. We’re aiming for him to return to play for round one - that would be our hope. But we’ll see how he’s going because he has a lot of hurdles to overcome before we can confirm that, including clearance from the doctor.”

Very little mention of Croft this off-season. In fact basically none from coaching staff. Kelly sounds like he may even be at higher odds of playing. You might be off the mark with your thoughts on this one, old boy @Huge

Perhaps you're correct but I have heard KW mention him on at least two occasions. Yes, I can be wrong. I think Croft, Kennedy and Flegler will all play a role this year and if I'm wrong it's because the team is going well without them. I could live with that.

Last year Croft and Kennedy were widely reviled on here but I couldn't help but think much of it was because people were shotgunning blame for an abysmal season. Cannot help myself, see the good in just about everyone.

I thought Kennedy was good too, really good at times but Croft was average at best. The final straw for me was the high five he gave to the Tigers player running through him for yet another try. Croft could be really good as a foil for a marquee dominant playmaker, unfortunately we don’t have one of those.

did you miss the interview with Matterson who nominated Croft as an option to replace Milf should he miss round 1

I didn't see him high five anyone but I'd be unpleasantly surprised if I learned he was a less effective tackler than Milford. I don't have any stats in front of me but stats only matter on this forum if they are favourable towards a favoured player.

If the player is disliked yet has a high efficiency rate for tackles detractors immediately claim the stats don't measure non attempts...unless of course they like the player! Anyway it doesn't really matter until we've seen 10 rounds. Then we'll have a much better idea of how we sit. Can't wait to see if KW has made a difference.
