Prince Discussion

Re: It's time to go...

Because we need to get better. We need to improve. Winning a few games doesn't mean we are the best team we can be.

And for the future. Price is old and busted. It will be criminal if Hunt leaves because of Prince. What happens if Prince gets injured tackling a big bopper? What happens next year? And the year after??

Re: It's time to go...

Exactly. We can be happy with the wins we get now. But Prince is really doing more harm than good, and Hunt being on the bench means that there's no chance of us unearthing any other hookers in the hope that they end up better than McCullough. I'd be looking towards the future and dumping Prince.

Re: It's time to go...

I don't think Griffin has the balls to drop Prince and make him play the season out in QCup in what could be his retirement year.

And what happens if Hunt goes no better than he has in the halves in the past?

Re: It's time to go...

Then at least we know and we can go back to using prince for a few more months before he retires.

Re: It's time to go...

if he only gets a game, with threat of Prince just walking back in if he's not awesome, then no.

But if Hunt got 6 weeks in a row, I guarantee people would change their mind about him.

However, as I said earlier, it's be counter productive right now. We've just spent 6 weeks working on the Prince-Wallace combination, why go back to square 1 on Hunt-Wallace?

I'm a fan of Hunt, and think it's crap the way Henjak and Hook turned him into an average hooker instead of developing him into a half. But it is what it is.

Oh please. How the hell would that help in any way?

Simple fact is that if Hunt showed the talent that many credit him with since he came into the side in 2010, Prince wouldn't be here.

Re: It's time to go...

I'm not saying he should be given the 7 right now, I just answered your question that if it did happen what the outcome would be.
Hunt hasn't had more than 2-3 games at the 7 in a row, Prince has been given 6 immediately just based on reputation.

If Prince doesn't improve his form then it will get to a point where he's just dragging the team down and if that happens he's not special and should be dumped like anyone else. Right now, I'm ok with him keeping his spot and seeing how it works out.

That's absolute bullshit!
Prince took the spot from Norman during the pre-season and trials. Norman had won it previously in direct competition with Hunt in the same way.
Hunt had another chance to prove he deserves a go in the halves this year, and he showed nothing... again!

Re: It's time to go...

The problem for Hunt is the fact the coaching staff view him now as a Hooker, a spot was made for him on the bench out of position. Any other player could be the 'backup' hooker Baptise/Capewell however the Halfback Hunt showed enough to be picked out of position ahead of those guys. Just like Norman showed enough to be picked out of position to replace K.Hunt originally and now pushed Hoffman to the wing because he has shown enough to be in the team one way or another.

Spwn is party right imo, It's not just based on reputation however. it's also because he is an Origin rep player who has won a premiership and been around for a fair while, You don't have those kind of players rolling around in QCup.

And I reckon what you're saying is absolute bullshit too.

If Prince was a no namer, lets call him Ralavusi for fun, and he was playing just the way he has these last 6 rounds he'd be banished by round 3 at the most. When did Hunt get a chance in the halves this year? 10 minutes during a game aas an interchange? Prince has been caught with the ball so many times, has had an average kicking game, a few rookie errors with ball handling and has only setup a try or two in 6 games.

I'm not arguing for Prince to be dropped right now, I'm happy to let it go for a few more rounds but he's been absolutely average in his 6 games with us and the only reason I'm ok with him keeping his spot is because he seemed to improve in his last game which suggests to me that once he gets comfortable with the team he should hopefully get a LOT better because if he keeps playing the way he has in the last 6 rounds going into the next 6 rounds then I'll be happy to see him lining up in q cup.

Re: It's time to go...

No mate, it's during the pre-season and trials that you have to make your claim for a spot in the halves. Hunt had nothing 2 years in a row, first losing to Norman, now losing to Norman AND Prince.
Yes, Prince's name has influence, but fact is that neither Hunt nor Norman have been capable than doing better than him when they had a chance to prove themselves: Pre-season and trials!

Prince & Wallace have formed a combination and are starting to show the goods and feed of eachother, but we should break that up in the off chance that Hunt will do something he has not ever shown when he had the chance to... righto, I'm sure he will save us all and cure cancer in his spare time!

The team is going shit---> It's because of the halves!
The team is going well---> The halves have nothing to do with it!

Re: It's time to go...

Well, as long as you are happy with any small win and think that any further possible improvement is unnecessary, then by all means, enjoy Prince and Wallace in the halves for the next two years with likely no cover once our only untested and promising half leaves.

I don't think anyone here holds the view that this current halves pairing is anything more than a one season fix.. And if this tidal wave of rumours is anything to go by, the club may well be about to lock in a worthy long term 6/7..

I think Porthoz et al make good points re ben hunt.. If he truly was the answer, he'd have well and truly bashed the door down by now, even in the limited time he's averaged and albeit out of position.. He's shown glimpses of good stuff but not nearly enough to elevate his profile beyond 'handy' ...

Re: It's time to go...

Where did I say any improvement is unnecessary?

I've actually seen improvement in these latest "small wins" , and have reason to be confident we'll only get better. Certainly more confident than I would be replacing a guy with a curriculum that speaks for itself and has been improving each week alongside the team, with an "untested and promising halve" who has never delivered on that promise.

Tbh, what I don't understand is this blind faith that Hunt is the next best thing since sliced bread....

I don't understand why everyone else gets a good chance to "build combinations", while Hunt is thrown in there 1 game at a time and is expected to set the world on fire, especially after continuously playing 20 to 30 mins of hooker off the bench. He's definitely the one player who'll need time to show what he's got. I don't see why we need to keep persisting with one guy who is so far over the hill it's not even funny. It just shows the younger players that the coach is happy to continue to reward mediocrity as long as they have experience.

And it isn't just the halves we'd be looking towards the future with. If Hunt goes in the halves, giving a real hooker a spot on the bench will put pressure on McCullough too, something that Hunt isn't really doing. And everyone can see that Hunt has been outplaying McCullough lately...imagine if it was a real hooker instead.
