QLD Squad 2020

Thanks goodness for the Titans this year. Who thought we’d ever say that?

Everything’s coming up Kurt Mann
He just about has to be there. Great season and he can fill a number of areas where we are looking at struggling for options this series.

Personally I'd play him in the Centres but honestly anywhere in the 17 would be fine.

So a quick update on the state of play after Week 1 of the Finals:

- Kalyn Ponga likely missing the entire series
- Valentine Holmes suspended for Game 1
- Kyle Feldt ruled out for the series

This leaves a big question mark over the backline with at least one vacancy on the Wing that needs to be filled with Holmes suspended for Game 1. I think the Finals games remaining will have a big say on this. The potential candidates are thin on the ground but likely include: Ronaldo Mulitalo, Corey Allan, Phillip Sami, Brenko Lee and Enari Tuala

Sami's Titans were already gone before the finals kicked off and now Ronaldo Mulitalo and Tuala's sides were both knocked out on the weekend, leaving Allan and Brenko Lee as the only two candidates left still playing. Allan has been in pretty sublime touch since taking over at Fullback and the fact his club Coach is now the Origin Coach likely puts him in the box seat at this stage.

1. Brimson
2. Allan
3. Capewell
4. Mann
5. Gagai
6. Munster
7. DCE
8. McGuire
9. Grant
10. Papalli
11. Kaufusi
12. Su'a
13. Arrow

14. Hunt
15. Fotuaika
16. Welch
17. Carrigan/Tino

With Ponga out and everyone else dropping like flies; imagine the meltdown (me included) if Bennett dragged HMAS Boyd away from his start-up gender reveal party planning business to play fullback.

Don't even say it.

Not debating that but defensively... he's been piss poor. Hard to blame that many misses on not being in a 'purple patch'.
I’d say his bung shoulder probably didn’t help his defence.

I don’t hate our pack, lots of mongrel. If we win it’s on their backs.

Their spine and their back line is quite a bit stronger than ours. Then of course they also have far greater depth which is hardly unique to being a 2020 problem for Queensland, but it's almost certainly going to be an issue once again this series.

Luckily, Bennett typically revels in this kind of 'backs to the walls' stuff and I expect a few left field selections and a side that will be very much up for the fight.

Just go with this:

1. Brimson
2. Mann
3. Munster
4. Mann
5. Holmes
6. Mann
7. DCE

That's true no way of knowing when he picked it up though. I'm sure people may have different opinions on this but I don't like players being allowed/asked to play if injuries are effecting them to that extent. Sure play through niggles but it was a fairly innocuous tackle that sees him under the knife and off for four months at least. Guess it is probably the players choice in most cases but clubs could be a bit more proactive IMO.

Couple of sites now saying this morning that Josh McGuire will be cut for the squad for Game 1. Seems a bold call for a side already down on experience especially given he's had a pretty reasonable year.

Apparently Brimson, Sami and Fotuaika are all included in the squad too.

McGuire will be a loss in terms of experience and grub-factor but I think middle forwards are one area that we definitely have the depth coming through and need to blood some of the young talent.

I'm quietly confident that Wayne has the pragmatism required to put out a side that can exploit NSW's weaknesses. I have a sneaky feeling he might follow the media's agenda and bring in Brenko Lee which will allow Gagai to shift to the wing where he has excelled and can at least try to nullify Tupou.

Big concern has to be Munster's fitness because we truly don't have a 5/8 anywhere near his level and if he's out we'll almost certainly be in trouble with Norman or Taylor.

Interesting. I was wondering which middle forward was going to miss out, I guess it's Moose.

I'd say that's close to bang on, although I think Corey Allan is constantly firming up in his odds for that Wing spot with every game Souths manage to stay alive especially now that Bennett will be the Maroons Coach.

What odds would anyone have given on here at the start of the season that both McGuire and Klemmer would be watching this series on their TV screens not related to them being injured/suspended???
