Q-CUP Queensland Cup 2023

just because we don't have a feeder team in every area of South East QLD ... doesn't mean we've neglected the area where we don't have teams
Of course it doesn’t, but to suggest not holding onto clubs in other areas doesn’t come with a cost is just seriously undervaluing the role these clubs play in developing the pipeline for what will one day be NRL level talent.

- The Storm now have 3 x Clubs
- The Dolphins now have 3 x Clubs
- The Roosters have 2 x Clubs plus the Central Coast Rugby League which is enormous.

You could argue Penrith and Parramatta get by on just the 1 x Feeder Club but both those districts have player numbers that are enormous in their own right simply by virtue of Western Sydney’s huge population relative to Brisbane.

Are we really going to pretend the richest and most well resourced club in the game can’t maintain relationships with any more than 2 clubs? Half our current squad came out of the Titans backyard but we can’t rely on them to just be asleep at the wheel forever in that regard surely?

The Broncos really need to find a way to claim back some of the ground they’ve been losing for some time now. The Dolphins now have arguably two of the strongest and most prolific assets in the QRL on their books, not to mention the Capras as well, and that should be a real concern for us.

Clydesdales only just got locked up by the Bulldogs, no idea how long for but that likely rules them out for the time being - seems a shame given the historical ties to the Clydesdales name and with us being boxed in North by the Dolphins and South by the Titans, a push towards the West seems to be about all we can work towards now.

Storm just picked up North Sydney, so it would be interesting to see if that had any impact on Easts Brisbane and the Falcons going forward - can the Storm really sustain a meaningful relationship with three clubs?

Ipswich is the other massive growth area that the Broncos have obviously neglected for a long time now - would be nice to see us apply some pressure to the Roosters on that front, even if it is unlikely especially given the Roosters just lost North Sydney.

Do we do something a bit more radical like getting involved with the Hunters? I’m not sure how difficult that would be to execute in practice and I guess the risk exists that we’ll do the hard work only to lose them within the next 5+ years if the NRL gets serious about putting an NRL club up there/Pasifika?

We had a talent pool that was the envy of the entire comp only a decade or so ago - now we’re down to two clubs in almost the same pocket of Brisbane - that really shouldn’t be sitting well with the people running the show.
Gold coast for me if possible, because they have the elite schools which the best young players are at, it makes it easy.

Would be great, but the NRL did this thing about 15 years ago where they went and stuck an NRL club down there, so there’s that…

They are trying to make an inhouse team for next year(like what Cowboys have done with the blackhawks) and both Burleigh and Tweed are off contract from what I know after this season.

Hope we pull the girls out as well, seeing as the Dolphins made an effort in their release to mention the Devils joining BMD this year with a view to the NRLW for the Dolphins

Obviously with how volatile the movement is it may not matter, but I think symbolically we should still do it.

They’ll have a terrible team, if one at all next year if we withdrew all the contracted players out, but tough shit.

I still think we should our own reserve grade team

Base them at Magpies, as long as we have Logan we have the best area in SEQ.

I do wonder what the phins player allocation will be like, I would think they would naturally want the best players playing for phins in cup, leaving norths with the scraps.

Norths won a Grand FInal and didn't have any Broncos.

You don't sign these deals for the two players you may get.

It's pretty harsh on the girls, are you going to say Romy can't play for a Cowboys feeder?

They have to play QRLW to play for Queensland, and they have to go where they can get a gig.

Storm where there from 98-07 and made developments and signings that have killed the Broncos for 20 years and Brisbane are still chasing the Storm.

How much does history change if the Broncos had been with the Devils in 2001 when Smith, Cronk and Slater were in the Norths Colts team?

I take your point, but I don't think those particular signings had anything to do with Norths. The only player you could make the case for was Billy Slater and that's simply because the Devils had an opening when Billy's old man called around.

Otherwise Cooper and Cameron were product of the South's junior catchment when Melbourne brought them in and sent them to Norths. They didn't come through the juniors and Melbourne got to enjoy the spoils, they were brought in.

Would I be right in saying the only Devils junior currently in the NRL squad is Brendan Frei? Brisbane have sent players there to play Colts and QCup but they were all signed out of NZ, CQ, GC etc.

I'm struggling to think of the last player Brisbane actually brought through that catchment. Was it Kodi Nikorima?

It's been pretty even between the Capras and the Dolphins. The Capras seem to receive more experienced players like Anthony Milford, Kodi Nikorima, Edrick Lee etc. Whereas the Dolphins get the younger players like Mason Teague, Jack Bostock, Max Plath, Michael Waqa etc.

I presume you'll see Redcliffe players like Jennings, Faamausilli etc. at the Devils.

It'll be interesting to see if Liam Horne and players of that ilk come into consideration for the NRL off-season.
So redcliffe looking after their own younger player development while Capras just give the older heads game time and match fitness

Yes and if one of the Capras juniors impresses during the pre-season like Donoghue then they retain affiliation with the Capras.

I understand they weren't Norths juniors, but Storm did very well out of the whole Norths set up and that whole post 2000 cohort set the Broncos back 20 years- they are still paying for it.

I thoroughly agree with you. The Storm quickly grew in strength at our cost. No doubt because they had Ribot and co. who knew the intricate workings of the SE Queensland setup and were able to exploit it for the benefit of the (then) new Storm franchise. I have little doubt that Benny's rich knowledge of the same system was one of the bonuses the Fins knew they were getting when they signed him.

I shudder to think how far we might have fallen when the Fins came in if we still had somebody like White at the wheel. Having said that , I don't think DD is the messiah either and all this expansion, not just of the Fins will be having a huge impact on our future as a club.
